    SECTION 2 — About the Author /

Liam O'Flaherty was a prominent Irish novelist and short story writer, celebrated for his keen psychological insight and powerful depictions of nature. His writing often explores themes of survival, fear, and the intense struggle for existence in the natural world. In 'His First Flight', O'Flaherty masterfully uses the simple setting of a seagull family on a cliff to explore the universal human themes of overcoming fear, building self-confidence, and the crucial role of parental tough love. The story is a brilliant allegory for any young person facing the daunting transition towards independence.

    SECTION 4 — Summary /

The story focuses on a young seagull standing alone on a high cliff ledge. While his siblings had successfully flown away the day before, he was paralyzed by the fear that his wings would not support him. His parents tried everything—scolding him, taunting his cowardice, and threatening to let him starve—but he simply could not muster up the courage to plunge into the vast sea below.

After twenty-four hours of isolation and intense hunger, he watched his mother tearing a piece of fish. Maddened by hunger, he begged her for food. His mother flew towards him with the fish but deliberately halted just out of his reach. Unable to resist, the starving seagull dived at the fish, falling off the ledge. A momentary terror seized him, but soon, instinct took over. His wings spread outwards, and he realized he was soaring, not falling. Overcoming his fear, he successfully made his first flight, eventually landing safely on the sea, cheered on by his proud family.

    SECTION 5 — Characters /

The Young Seagull Initially, the young seagull is extremely timid, lacking self-confidence, and paralyzed by the fear of falling. Despite having longer wings than his siblings, he refuses to fly. However, his intense hunger ultimately overpowers his fear. Once he takes the leap, his natural instincts activate, revealing his hidden capability to soar. He represents anyone afraid to take the first difficult step in life.

The Mother Seagull The mother seagull is strict, observant, and highly strategic. She knows that mere encouragement is not working. By deliberately holding the fish just out of his reach, she cleverly uses his extreme hunger to force him off the ledge. Her tough love is the crucial catalyst that finally makes the young bird fly.

    SECTION 6 — Central Theme and Values /

    6A. Theme Table /

    Theme / विषय

    How it appears

    Overcoming Fear (भीतीवर मात)

The young seagull must conquer his absolute terror of the vast sea and his own perceived weakness to finally fly.

    Independence (स्वावलंबन)

The parents leave the young bird alone and hungry to teach him that he must learn to support himself.

    Parental Tough Love (कठोर प्रेम)

The parents scold, taunt, and deliberately starve the seagull, knowing it is the only way to push him to survive.

    6B. Values /

    • Courage (धैर्य) — The story shows that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to take the plunge despite the monstrous terror.

    • Self-Reliance (आत्मनिर्भरता) — The young bird learns that nobody else can fly for him; he must take the risk himself.

    • Perseverance (चिकाटी) — Despite feeling tired and dizzy, the seagull keeps flapping his wings until he masters soaring and diving.

    SECTION 8 — Extract-Based Questions /

    Extract 1:

The young seagull was alone on his ledge. His two brothers and his sister had already flown away the day before. He had been afraid to fly with them. Somehow when he had taken a little run forward to the brink of the ledge and attempted to flap his wings he became afraid. The great expanse of sea stretched down beneath, and it was such a long way down - miles down. He felt certain that his wings would never support him; so he bent his head and ran away back to the little hole under the ledge where he slept at night. Even when each of his brothers and his little sister, whose wings were far shorter than his own, ran to the brink, flapped their wings, and flew away, he failed to muster up courage to take that plunge which appeared to him so desperate.

Q.(A)(i) — State whether the following are True or False: (2 marks)

    1. The young seagull's siblings had flown away the day before. — True

    2. The young seagull's wings were shorter than his sister's wings. — False

    3. The great expanse of the sea gave the seagull confidence. — False

    4. The young seagull slept in a little hole under the ledge.

Q.(A)(ii) — Choose the correct alternative: (2 marks)

    1. The young seagull failed to muster up... (a) food (b) courage (c) anger (d) sleep Answer: (b)

    2. What stretched down beneath the ledge? (a) A thick forest (b) A great expanse of sea (c) A small river (d) A busy city Answer: (b)

Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks) Why did the young seagull not fly with his brothers and sister? Answer: The young seagull did not fly with his siblings because he was terrified of the great expanse of sea stretching miles down beneath the ledge. He felt absolutely certain that his own wings would never support him, causing him to lose his courage at the very brink.

Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks) What did the seagull do when he attempted to flap his wings at the brink? Answer: When the young seagull took a little run forward to the brink and attempted to flap his wings, he became instantly afraid. Believing his wings would fail him, he completely lost his nerve. Instead of taking the desperate plunge, he bent his head in defeat and ran back to the little hole under the ledge.

    Extract 2:

"Ga, ga, ga", he cried begging her to bring him some food. "Gaw-col-ah", she screamed back derisively. But he kept calling plaintively, and after a minute or so he uttered a joyful scream. His mother had picked up a piece of the fish and was flying across to him with it. He leaned out eagerly, tapping the rock with his feet, trying to get nearer to her as she flew across. But when she was just opposite to him, she halted, her wings motionless, the piece of fish in her beak almost within reach of his beak. He waited a moment in surprise, wondering why she did not come nearer, and then, maddened by hunger, he dived at the fish. With a loud scream he fell outwards and downwards into space.

Q.(A)(i) — State whether the following are True or False: (2 marks)

    1. The young seagull begged his father to bring him food. — False

    2. The mother screamed back affectionately. — False

    3. The young seagull uttered a joyful scream when his mother brought fish. — True

    4. The young seagull dived at the fish because he was maddened by hunger.

Q.(A)(ii) — Choose the correct alternative: (2 marks)

    1. The mother halted when the fish was almost within... (a) the water (b) the nest (c) reach of his beak (d) the brother's beak Answer: (c)

    2. The word 'plaintively' means... (a) happily (b) expressing sorrow / begging (c) angrily (d) silently Answer: (b)

Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks) Why did the young seagull wait a moment in surprise? Answer: The young seagull waited a moment in surprise because his mother, who was flying towards him with food, suddenly halted in mid-air just opposite him. He was deeply confused and wondered why she did not come just a little nearer to feed him the fish.

Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks) Describe the exact moment the young seagull fell off the ledge. Answer: The young seagull was completely maddened by the severe hunger he had endured for twenty-four hours. When his mother held the fish agonizingly close but just out of reach, instinct took over. Unable to control himself, he dived directly at the fish, resulting in him falling outwards and downwards into the open space with a loud scream.

    SECTION 9 — Short Answer Questions /

Q1. What did the young seagull feel certain about regarding his wings?

Answer: As the young seagull looked down at the massive, miles-deep expanse of the sea, he suffered from a severe lack of confidence. He felt absolutely certain that his wings would never be able to support his body weight in the air. This deep-rooted fear stopped him from even attempting the flight.

Q2. How did the seagull's parents treat him after he refused to fly?

Answer: When he failed to muster the courage to take the plunge, his parents employed a harsh "tough love" approach. They flew around calling to him shrilly and upbraiding (scolding) him. Furthermore, they strictly threatened to let him stay on the ledge and starve unless he finally decided to fly away like his siblings.

Q3. What were the young seagull's parents teaching his brothers and sister? Answer: The day before, the young seagull watched his parents actively perfecting his siblings in the advanced art of flight. They were meticulously teaching the younger birds how to smoothly skim the ocean waves. Additionally, they taught them the crucial survival skill of how to dive properly to catch their own fish.

Q4. What was the mother seagull's clever trick to make the young one fly? Answer: Knowing the young seagull was starving and maddened by hunger, the mother picked up a piece of fish and flew towards him. However, instead of feeding him, she deliberately halted in the air, keeping the fish just out of his reach. This clever trick forced the desperate bird to dive at the food, making him fall and naturally spread his wings.

    SECTION 10 — Long Answer Questions /

Q1. Describe the young seagull's transition from sheer terror to the joy of his first flight.

Answer: The young seagull's journey from terror to triumph is a powerful emotional transition. Initially, he was so paralyzed by the fear of the "great expanse of sea" that he believed his wings would fail him, causing him to hide in a hole while his siblings flew. Even extreme hunger and his family's taunts couldn't move him for a whole day. However, when maddened by hunger, he dived at the fish in his mother's beak and fell into space. At first, a "monstrous terror seized him" and his heart stood still. But this terror lasted only a minute. Pure instinct took over, and he felt his wings spread outwards, catching the wind. Realizing he was soaring and no longer falling headlong, his fear vanished, replaced only by a slight dizziness. He flapped his wings, soared upwards, and began shrieking shrilly with pure joy, completely forgetting that he was ever afraid to fly.

Q2. How does the story highlight the importance of independence and the role of parents in fostering it?

Answer: The story "His First Flight" brilliantly illustrates that independence is not handed over; it must be claimed, often through facing one's deepest fears. The seagull's parents play a crucial, albeit seemingly harsh, role in this process. Initially, they try verbal encouragement, scolding, and even taunting him for his cowardice, but they realize that providing food on the ledge will only keep him dependent. To force his independence, they withdraw all support, leaving him completely alone and starving for twenty-four hours. The mother then perfectly executes a strategy of "tough love"—using food as bait to lure him off the cliff. By halting just out of reach, she forces him to take the final leap himself. The story concludes that parents must sometimes let their children face extreme discomfort and take risks, as it is the only way for the young ones to discover their own wings and survive independently in the real world.
