This lesson, taken from the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, describes the valiant struggle of the great vulture, Jatayu. As Ravana abducts Sita and carries her away in his chariot, a weeping Sita spots Jatayu perched on a tree and cries out for help, calling him "Arya."

Awakened by her cries, the noble Jatayu confronts Ravana. He delivers a moral lesson, telling the demon king to give up his evil intention of touching another man's wife, an act that a brave man should never do. Despite being old (वृद्धः) while Ravana is young, armed, and in a chariot, Jatayu bravely challenges him, vowing that Ravana will not escape with Sita. He attacks Ravana fiercely, using his sharp talons and beak to inflict multiple wounds on Ravana's body and destroying his bow. In the end, a furious Ravana draws his sword, cuts off Jatayu's wings, sides, and feet, leaving the great bird to fall, mortally wounded, to the earth.

अ) जटायुरावणयोः सङ्घर्षस्य वर्णनं कुरुत ।

English: The conflict between Jatayu and Ravana was a fierce but unequal one. The old Jatayu, (वृद्धः) with only his natural weapons, fought bravely against the young (युवा) Ravana, who was armed with a bow (धन्वी), arrows (शरी), armor (कवची), and a chariot (सरथः). Jatayu, the mighty bird (महाबलः, पतगसत्तमः), attacked first. He used his sharp talons (तीक्ष्णनखाभ्यां) and feet (चरणाभ्यां) to inflict multiple deep wounds (बहुधा व्रणान्) on Ravana's body. He then broke Ravana's pearl-adorned bow (चापं बभञ्ज). Enraged by this, Ravana (दशग्रीवः) drew his sword (खड्गम् उद्धृत्य) and retaliated. He mercilessly cut off Jatayu's wings (पक्षौ), sides (पार्श्वों), and feet (पादौ), mortally wounding the great bird and causing him to fall to the earth.
