SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson
१. पर्यावरण-प्रदर्शनी तथा प्रथम-द्वितीय-पद्ये | Trees as Noble Beings and Their Value
At a school exhibition on environmental conservation (पर्यावरणसंरक्षणस्य विषये प्रदर्शनी), students and their teacher discuss how trees give pure air, fruits, and flowers (शुद्धं वायुं, फलानि, पुष्पाणि च यच्छन्ति) and are worthy of reverence (पूज्याः). Mudita recites a Subhashita, and the class sings together:
श्लोकः १: Trees stand in the scorching sun themselves (स्वयम् आतपे तिष्ठन्ति) while providing cool shade to others (अन्यस्य छायां कुर्वन्ति). Their fruits are also for the benefit of others (फलानि अपि परार्थाय); therefore, trees are just like noble people (वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषाः इव).
श्लोकः २: One stepwell equals ten wells (दशकूपसमा वापी); one lake equals ten stepwells (दशवापीसमो ह्रदः); one son/child equals ten lakes (दशह्रदसमः पुत्रः); and one tree equals ten children in value (दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः). Therefore, everyone should plant trees (सर्वे वृक्षारोपणं कुर्वन्तु).
२. तृतीय-चतुर्थ-पद्ये (सर्वप्राण्युपजीवनं परोपकारः च) | Living for All Beings
श्लोकः ३: Supporting all living beings (सर्वप्राण्युपजीवनम्), the birth of trees is truly blessed (एषां जन्म वरम्). Just as seekers never return disappointed from a good person (सुजनस्य इव), those who come to trees never go back empty-handed (अर्थिनः विमुखाः न यान्ति).
श्लोकः ४: Trees bear fruit for helping others (परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः), rivers flow for others (परोपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः), cows yield milk for others (परोपकाराय दुहन्ति गावः), and this human body too is meant for selfless service (परोपकारार्थम् इदं शरीरम्).
३. पञ्चम-षष्ठ-पद्ये (वृक्षाणां दातृत्वं सतां स्वभावः च) | Generosity of Nature and the Noble
श्लोकः ५: Blessed are the trees (धन्याः महीरुहाः) from whose flowers, leaves, fruits, shade, roots, bark, and wood (पुष्प-पत्र-फल-छाया-मूल-वल्कल-दारुभिः) seekers never turn away disappointed. Everything a tree has is for living beings.
श्लोकः ६: Rivers do not drink their own water (नद्यः स्वयमेव अम्भः न पिबन्ति), trees do not eat their own fruits (वृक्षाः स्वयं फलानि न खादन्ति), and clouds certainly do not eat the crops they help grow (वारिवाहाः सस्यं खलु न अदन्ति). Indeed, the wealth of noble people is always for the benefit of others (परोपकाराय सतां विभूतयः).
SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works
१. चतुर्थी-विभक्तेः 'तादर्थ्ये / उपकारार्थे' प्रयोगः (The Fourth Case for Purpose and Benefit)
रूपम् | Pattern एकवचनम्: परार्थाय, परोपकाराय, उपकाराय, उपयोगाय बहुवचनम्: प्राणिभ्यः, अन्येभ्यः, अस्मभ्यम् (for us)
अर्थः / Use When an action is done "for the sake of" someone or "to give to" someone, Sanskrit uses चतुर्थी-विभक्तिः (dative case). You can also express "for the purpose of" by adding -अर्थम् (यथा — परोपकारार्थम् = परोपकाराय).
उदाहरणम् | Example वृक्षाः परार्थाय फलानि यच्छन्ति। (Trees give fruits for the sake of others.) परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः। (Trees bear fruit for the benefit of others.) वृक्षः प्राणिभ्यः काष्ठानि यच्छति। (The tree gives wood to living beings.)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Whenever the verb ददाति / यच्छति (gives) is used, the receiver takes चतुर्थी-विभक्तिः (यथा — प्राणिभ्यः, अन्येभ्यः, तेभ्यः, अस्मभ्यम्).
२. 'इव' तथा '-समः / -समा' इति उपमान-प्रयोगः (Expressing Comparison — "Like" and "Equal To")
रूपम् | Pattern (क) [उपमानम्] + इव (यथा — सत्पुरुषाः इव, सुजनस्य इव) (ख) [संख्या-वस्तु] + समः (पुं.) / समा (स्त्री.)
अर्थः / Use The indeclinable word इव means "like" or "similar to". The suffix -समः (masculine) or -समा (feminine) means "equal to" and matches the gender of the noun being compared.
उदाहरणम् | Example वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषाः इव सन्ति। (Trees are like noble people.) दशकूपसमा वापी (स्त्रीलिङ्गम् — one stepwell is equal to ten wells)। दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः (पुंलिङ्गम् — one tree is equal to ten sons/children)।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Notice how समा (feminine) is used with वापी, whereas समः (masculine) is used with ह्रदः, पुत्रः, and द्रुमः.
३. लट्लकारे विशेष-क्रियारूपाणि (Important Present Tense Verb Forms in the Verses)
रूपम् | Pattern एकवचनम् → द्विवचनम् → बहुवचनम्: करोति → कुरुतः → कुर्वन्ति याति → यातः → यान्ति (goes / go) ददाति / यच्छति → दत्तः / यच्छतः → ददति / यच्छन्ति
अर्थः / Use In the verses, plural subjects like वृक्षाः, नद्यः, गावः, अर्थिनः, and वारिवाहाः take plural verb forms (कुर्वन्ति, तिष्ठन्ति, फलन्ति, वहन्ति, दुहन्ति, यान्ति, पिबन्ति, खादन्ति, अदन्ति).
उदाहरणम् | Example वृक्षाः अन्यस्य छायां कुर्वन्ति, स्वयम् आतपे तिष्ठन्ति। अर्थिनः विमुखाः न यान्ति। नद्यः स्वयमेव अम्भः न पिबन्ति।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember अदन्ति (from अद् धातुः) and खादन्ति both mean "eat" (वारिवाहाः सस्यं न अदन्ति = मेघाः सस्यं न खादन्ति).
Observations:
Recognise the different виभक्तिः forms used in the chapter's sentences: वृक्षाः / सत्पुरुषाः / द्रुमः (प्रथमा), छायाम् / जलम् / सङ्गतिम् (द्वितीया), दारुभिः (तृतीया), परार्थाय / प्राणिभ्यः (चतुर्थी), अन्यस्य / सुजनस्य / सताम् / सज्जनानाम् (षष्ठी), and आतपे (सप्तमी).
The riddle in योग्यताविस्तरः describes नारिकेलः (coconut): it sits at the top of a tree (वृक्षाग्रवासी) but is not Garuda (पक्षिराजः); it has three eyes (त्रिनेत्रधारी) but is not Shiva (शूलपाणिः); it wears bark clothes (त्वग्वस्त्रधारी) but is not an ascetic; and it holds water (जलं बिभ्रत्) though it is neither a pot nor a cloud!
SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences
Pattern 1: 'कः किं ददाति' इति वाक्य-रचना (Stating What Nature and Gurus Give Us) [कर्ता (प्रथमा)] + [कर्म (द्वितीया)] + ददाति / यच्छति। Example: वृक्षः शुद्धं वायुं ददाति। (The tree gives pure air.) गौः दुग्धं ददाति। (The cow gives milk.) सूर्यः प्रकाशं ददाति। (The sun gives light.) नदी जलं ददाति। (The river gives water.) अग्निः तापं ददाति। (Fire gives heat.) शिक्षकः ज्ञानं ददाति। (The teacher gives knowledge.)
Pattern 2: चतुर्थी-विभक्त्या परोपकार-वाक्यानि (Expressing Actions Done for Others) [कर्ता] + परोपकाराय / परार्थाय / प्राणिभ्यः + [क्रियापदम्]। Example: वृक्षाः परोपकाराय फलन्ति। (Trees bear fruit for the benefit of others.) नद्यः परोपकाराय वहन्ति। (Rivers flow for the benefit of others.) वृक्षः प्राणिभ्यः फलानि पुष्पाणि छायां च यच्छति। (The tree gives fruits, flowers, and shade to living beings.)
Pattern 3: 'स्वयम् ... न ...' इति निःस्वार्थ-भाव-वाक्यानि (Stating Selflessness) [कर्ता] + स्वयम् + [वस्तु] + न खादन्ति / न पिबन्ति। Example: नद्यः जलं स्वयमेव न पिबन्ति। (Rivers do not drink their water themselves.) वृक्षाः फलानि स्वयं न खादन्ति। (Trees do not eat their fruits themselves.) वारिवाहाः सस्यं स्वयं न खादन्ति। (Clouds do not eat the crops themselves.)
Pattern 4: दैनन्दिन-सम्भाषण-वाक्यानि (Everyday Conversation Patterns from the Appendix) Example: भवतः गृहं कुत्र अस्ति? → मम गृहं सञ्जयनगरे अस्ति। रविः कुतः आगच्छति? → रविः ग्रन्थालयतः आगच्छति। (कुतः = from where; -तः = from) सः किमर्थं योगासनं करोति? → सः आरोग्यार्थं योगासनं करोति।

SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit
१. वृक्षारोपण-पर्यावरण-सङ्कल्पः (Speaking about tree plantation and care): When planting a sapling at home or school, say: दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः! अहं वृक्षारोपणं करोमि, पादपानां संरक्षणं च करोमि।
२. परोपकार-भावनायाः कथनम् (Expressing the value of helping others): Share the core message of the lesson in class speeches or morning assembly: वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषाः इव सन्ति। परोपकारार्थम् इदं शरीरम्। वयम् अपि परोपकारं कुर्मः।
३. दैनन्दिन-संस्कृत-सम्भाषणम् (Using everyday conversational questions with friends): Practise the functional conversation sentences from the textbook's संभाषणम् page with your classmates:
नमस्ते! भवान् / भवती कथम् अस्ति? → अहं कुशली अस्मि (boy) / अहं कुशलिनी अस्मि (girl)।
भवत्याः आरोग्यं कथम् अस्ति? → मम आरोग्यं सम्यक् अस्ति।
भवान् अद्य किं खादितवान्? / भवती अद्य किं खादितवती? → अहम् अद्य फलानि खादितवान् / दोसां खादितवती।
SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember
Trees are compared to noble people (वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषाः इव) because they endure the hot sun themselves (स्वयम् आतपे तिष्ठन्ति) while giving shade, fruits, flowers, leaves, roots, bark, and wood to others.
Ancient wisdom highlights the immense ecological value of a single tree by declaring: दशकूपसमा वापी, दशवापीसमो ह्रदः, दशह्रदसमः पुत्रः, दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः.
Synonyms for tree in this chapter are वृक्षः, द्रुमः, महीरुहः, and पादपः; synonyms for cloud and water are वारिवाहः (मेघः) and अम्भः (जलम्).
चतुर्थी-विभक्तिः (such as परार्थाय, परोपकाराय, प्राणिभ्यः) is used to show for whose benefit an action is performed or to whom something is given.
Just as rivers, trees, cows, and clouds serve the world selflessly, our human life and resources are meant for helping others (परोपकारार्थम् इदं शरीरम् / परोपकाराय सतां विभूतयः)
