SECTION 2 — Overview /
The poem 'The Twins' by Henry Sambrooke Leigh is an extremely humorous and absurd poem that exaggerates the everyday problems faced by identical twins. The speaker complains that he and his twin brother, John, look so exactly alike in form, feature, face, and limb that even their own relatives cannot tell them apart. This fatal likeness causes a series of hilarious mix-ups throughout his life: they get their names swapped by the nurse, the speaker gets beaten at school for his brother's mistakes, his intended bride marries John instead, and finally, when the speaker dies, the neighbours accidentally bury his brother.
SECTION 3 — Central Theme and Values /
3A. Theme Table /
Theme / विषय | How it appears |
Humour and Absurdity (विनोद आणि अतिशयोक्ती) | The poem relies heavily on highly exaggerated and impossible situations (like burying the wrong brother) to create continuous laughter. |
Loss of Identity (ओळख हरवणे) | The speaker constantly suffers because his individual identity is completely mixed up with his brother John's identity. |
3B. Values /
A Sense of Humour (विनोदी वृत्ती) — The poem teaches the reader to appreciate humour and exaggeration to reduce boredom in daily life.
Acceptance (स्वीकार) — Despite the absurd and fatal mistakes happening year after year, the speaker simply accepts his confusing fate.
3C. Central Message /
The poem does not have a serious moral message. Its primary purpose is to entertain the reader by creating laughter through the use of hyperbole (exaggeration) regarding the mistaken identities of identical twins.

SECTION 5 — Short Answer Questions /
Q1. In what aspects were the brothers alike?
Answer: The twin brothers were extremely identical in almost every physical aspect. They looked exactly alike in their overall physical form and feature, as well as in their face and every single limb. This perfect resemblance confused all the folks around them.
Q2. What name did the speaker get and why?
Answer: The speaker was mistakenly given the name 'John' instead of his own intended name. This happened because before their names were officially fixed, the nurse was washing them and got the twin babies completely mixed up due to a sudden whim or fate's decree.
Q3. What is impossible in the last two lines of the poem?
Answer: In the last two lines, the speaker states, "And when I died, the neighbours came And buried brother John.". This situation is scientifically and practically impossible because neighbours would immediately know if the living brother was being buried instead of the dead one. This is a prime example of hyperbole.
SECTION 6 — Long Answer Questions /
Q1. Write a short summary of the absurd and senseless situations faced by the speaker in the poem 'The Twins'.
Answer: In the humorous poem 'The Twins', the speaker highlights several completely absurd and highly exaggerated situations caused by his identical resemblance to his brother John. First, the mix-up begins in infancy when the nurse accidentally swaps the babies while washing them, resulting in them receiving each other's names during the christening. As they grow up, the speaker is constantly punished and flogged at school for the foolish mistakes committed by John. The absurdity reaches its peak in adulthood when the situation turns the tide of his domestic life, and the speaker's intended bride ends up marrying his brother John instead. Finally, the most impossible and senseless situation occurs at the very end: when the speaker dies, the confused neighbours arrive and accidentally bury his brother John. Through these hilarious and logically impossible hyperbole examples, the poet successfully creates laughter and reduces boredom for the reader.
