    1. Understand the core wisdom and moral guidance offered by selected classic Sanskrit Subhāṣitas.

    2. Recognise the role and endings of the instrumental case (तृतीया विभक्तिः) expressing the means or instrument of an action.

    3. Convert poetic Sanskrit verse lines into logical prose word order (अन्वयः) for clearer comprehension.

    4. Construct simple Sanskrit sentences showing how internal and external qualities are purified or attained through specific actions.

    SECTION 3: मुख्यशब्दाः | Important Vocabulary

    • सुभाषितम् – well-spoken wise saying or moral verse – neuter noun.

    • वपुषा – by physique or bodily form – instrumental singular of the neuter noun वपुस्.

    • हातव्याः – should be abandoned or discarded – masculine plural potential passive participle (कृदन्तरूपम्).

    • भूतिम् – prosperity or spiritual elevation – accusative singular of the feminine noun भूति.

    • तन्द्रा – lassitude, sluggishness, or drowsiness – feminine noun.

    • दीर्घसूत्रता – procrastination or habit of delaying actions – feminine noun.

    • अद्भिः – by water – instrumental plural of the feminine noun अप्.

    • भूतात्मा – inner spirit or embodied soul – masculine nominative singular noun.

    • उपाश्रयति – takes refuge in or respectfully approaches – third-person singular present verb.

    • तुष्यन्ति – become satisfied or pleased – third-person plural present verb (तुष् धातु).

    • रिपुः – enemy or inner adversary – masculine nominative singular noun.

    • अवसीदति – sinks into sorrow or despairs – third-person singular present verb.

    SECTION 4: केन्द्रीयभावः | Central Idea

This collection of timeless verses acts as a practical ethical roadmap for human growth and societal harmony. The Subhāṣitas highlight that honour in society is earned through personal cultivation—combining decent appearance, physical health, pleasant speech, intellectual pursuit, and humility. They counsel seekers of progress to abandon fatal obstacles like sloth and procrastination, while purifying the mind and intellect through truth, self-discipline, and genuine learning. Emphasising continuous effort over instant success, the verses declare that steady diligence brings knowledge and wealth, gentle words gladden all living beings, and unselfish kindness to others remains the ultimate virtue.

    SECTION 5:पाठं अवगच्छामः | Understand the Lesson

सुभाषितानां परिचयः प्रयोजनं च | Origin and Purpose of the Verses The lesson begins in a classroom where students notice inspirational mottoes painted on the school walls and ask their teacher about them. The teacher explains that Subhāṣitas are refined utterances (सुवचनानि) left by wise thinkers to nurture character and social awareness. Rather than mere theoretical poetry, these verses offer direct guidance on what should be cultivated (किं कर्तव्यम्) and what must be shunned (किं न कर्तव्यम्).

पञ्च वकाराः षड् दोषाः च | Five Adornments and Six Human Flaws The initial verses establish essential habits for a disciplined life. A person attains genuine respect in society by developing five qualities beginning with the letter 'va' (पञ्च वकाराः): clean attire (वस्त्रम्), a sound body (वपुः), refined speech (वाक्), practical education (विद्या), and humility (विनयः). Conversely, anyone seeking personal prosperity and excellence (भूतिम्) must proactively discard six inner weaknesses: excessive sleep (निद्रा), sluggishness (तन्द्रा), ungrounded fear (भयम्), anger (क्रोधः), laziness (आलस्यम्), and chronic delay (दीर्घसूत्रता).

शुद्धिः ज्ञानविकासः च | Inner Cleansing and Intellectual Awakening The chapter demonstrates how different faculties require corresponding methods of purification: limbs (गात्राणि) are cleansed by water, the emotional mind (मनः) by truthfulness, the inner soul (भूतात्मा) by learning and austerity, and the intellect (बुद्धिः) by true knowledge. Just as tiny, continuous drops of water eventually fill a large earthen pot (घटः), modest daily efforts gradually build deep scholarship, moral righteousness, and prosperity. A student who regularly reads, writes, observes keenly, asks thoughtful questions, and seeks guidance from learned mentors expands their intellect naturally, resembling a lotus blossom opening under morning sunbeams.

मधुरभाषणं परिश्रमः परोपकारः च | Sweet Speech, Diligence, and Beneficence The remaining verses highlight human interactions and inner resilience. Kind and considerate speech brings joy to all living beings, meaning there is never an excuse to be stingy with gracious words (वचने का दरिद्रता). While laziness remains the deadliest foe dwelling right inside our physical bodies, constructive effort (उद्यमः) is a true friend that guarantees freedom from regret. Finally, Sage Vyasa's eighteen purāṇas are condensed into a single foundational maxim: helping others produces spiritual merit (परोपकारः पुण्याय), whereas causing harm to others generates sin (पापाय परपीडनम्).

    SECTION 6: पदच्छेदः एवं अन्वयः | Word Separation and Prose Order

    उदाहरणम् १

    • श्लोकांशः: अद्भिर्गात्राणि शुध्यन्ति मनः सत्येन शुध्यति।

    • पदच्छेदः: अद्भिः गात्राणि शुध्यन्ति, मनः सत्येन शुध्यति।

    • अन्वयक्रमः: गात्राणि अद्भिः शुध्यन्ति, मनः सत्येन शुध्यति।

    • Meaning: The limbs of the body are cleansed with water; the inner mind is purified by truthfulness. The noun in the nominative case functions as the subject, while the instrumental form specifies the purifying agent.

    उदाहरणम् २

    • श्लोकांशः: नास्त्युद्यमसमो बन्धुः कृत्वा यं नावसीदति।

    • पदच्छेदः: न अस्ति उद्यम-समः बन्धुः, कृत्वा यम् न अवसीदति।

    • अन्वयक्रमः: उद्यमसमः बन्धुः न अस्ति, यम् (उद्यमम्) कृत्वा (जनः) न अवसीदति।

    • Meaning: There is no friend equal to industrious effort, having engaged in which a person never sinks into dejection. Splitting the Sandhi helps spot the underlying negative particle (न) and verb (अस्ति).

SECTION 7: भाषापद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

तृतीयाविभक्तिः (करणकारकम्) | The Instrumental Case for Means or Tool

    • रूपम् | Form:

      • पुंलिङ्गम् / नपुंसकलिङ्गम्: सत्येन (by truth), ज्ञानेन (by knowledge), जलबिन्दुनिपातेन (by the falling of water drops).

      • स्त्रीलिङ्गम्: विद्यया (by knowledge/education), वाण्या (by speech).

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: When an object, virtue, or medium directly aids in achieving an outcome, it functions as the instrument (करणम्) and takes the तृतीया विभक्तिः.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. बुद्धिः ज्ञानेन शुध्यति। (The intellect is purified by knowledge.)

      2. घटः जलबिन्दुनिपातेन पूर्यते। (The pot is filled by the falling of water drops.)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Mark the specific tool, means, or instrument that accomplishes an action using the तृतीया विभक्तिः ending.

    तुमुन् एवं क्त्वा प्रत्ययौ | Indeclinable Participial Forms

    • रूपम् | Form:

      • क्त्वा (having done): कृत्वा (having done), श्रुत्वा (having heard), गीत्वा (having sung).

      • तुमुन् (for the purpose of doing): पठितुम् (to read), ज्ञातुम् (to know).

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: In Sanskrit, verbal suffixes like क्त्वा indicate a prior completed action by the same agent, while तुमुन् expresses purpose or intention.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. छात्राः सुभाषितानि पठितुम् इच्छन्ति। (The students wish to read the wise verses.)

      2. नरः उद्यमं कृत्वा न अवसीदति। (Engaging in purposeful effort, a person does not despair.)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Both क्त्वा and तुमुन् forms are indeclinable (अव्यय); their endings never shift for gender, case, or number.

SECTION 8: शब्दसम्बन्धाः | How Words Work Together

उदाहरणम् १ प्रियवाक्यप्रदानेन सर्वे जन्तवः तुष्यन्ति। All living beings are pleased by the delivery of pleasant words.

    1. जन्तवः is the masculine plural subject (कर्त्ता) placed in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः, बहुवचनम्).

    2. सर्वे is the numerical pronominal adjective qualifying जन्तवः, agreeing in gender, number, and case.

    3. प्रियवाक्यप्रदानेन functions as the direct instrument and reason for satisfaction, taking the instrumental singular ending (तृतीया विभक्तिः, एकवचनम्).

    4. तुष्यन्ति is the active finite verb in the present tense, third person plural (लट्-लकारः, प्रथमपुरुषः, बहुवचनम्), agreeing directly with जन्तवः.

    उदाहरणम् २ परोपकारः पुण्याय भवति, परपीडनं पापाय भवति। Altruism leads to merit; tormenting others leads to sin.

    1. परोपकारः and परपीडनम् stand as the primary subjects (कर्तृपदे) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः).

    2. पुण्याय and पापाय take the dative singular ending (चतुर्थी विभक्तिः, एकवचनम्), indicating the resulting purpose, outcome, or consequence of the respective acts.

    3. The sentence demonstrates that grammatical cases beyond the instrumental show the intended result or spiritual consequence of an activity.

    SECTION 9: मुख्यरूपाणि | Important Forms

    तृतीयाविभक्तिरूपाणि (Instrumental Case Paradigm)

    • अकारान्त-पुंलिङ्गः (छात्र): छात्रेण – छात्राभ्याम् – छात्रैः

    • आकारान्त-स्त्रीलिङ्गः (विद्या): विद्यया – विद्याभ्याम् – विद्याभिः

    • अकारान्त-नपुंसकलिङ्गः (ज्ञान): ज्ञानेन – ज्ञानाभ्याम् – ज्ञानैः

These forms indicate singular, dual, and plural means or instruments across the three grammatical genders.

Example: छात्रः ज्ञानेन बुद्धिं विकासयति। (The student expands their intellect through knowledge.)

    SECTION 10: वाक्यप्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

पद्धतिः १: तृतीयाविभक्तिप्रयोगः (Means of Purification or Achievement)

    • Pattern: [Subject] + [Instrument in तृतीया विभक्तिः] + [Verb]

    • Example: मनः सत्येन शुध्यति। (The mind is cleansed by truth.)

    • Variation: बुद्धिः ज्ञानेन निर्मला भवति। (The intellect becomes clear through knowledge.)

    • Explanation: Use the instrumental ending to express the virtue, tool, or practice that transforms a state.

    पद्धतिः २: विशेषण-विशेष्य-सम्बन्धः (Descriptive Agreement)

    • Pattern: [Adjective matching gender/number] + [Noun] + [Action/State]

    • Example: पञ्चभिः वकारैः युक्तः नरः पूजितः भवति। (A person endowed with the five 'v' virtues is honoured.)

    • Variation: सद्गुणैः युक्तः छात्रः सर्वत्र शोभते। (A student endowed with virtues shines everywhere.)

    • Explanation: The modifying word (विशेषणम्) must match its noun (विशेष्यम्) in gender, case, and number.

पद्धतिः ३: परित्यागवाक्यम् (Expressing What to Give Up)

    • Pattern: [Person in तृतीया] + [Flaws in प्रथमा] + हातव्याः

    • Example: भूतिम् इच्छता पुरुषेण षड् दोषाः हातव्याः। (A person desiring prosperity must discard the six flaws.)

    • Variation: सफलताम् इच्छता छात्रेण आलस्यं हातव्यम्। (A student desiring success must discard laziness.)

    • Explanation: This pattern shows what obligations a person must carry out to secure advancement.

    SECTION 11: मुख्यविचाराः | Important Ideas

    1. Holistic Self-Mastery: Respect is not gained by external appearance alone; it requires an inner integration of wholesome physical health, disciplined study, truthful speech, and genuine modesty.

    2. The Power of Gradual Accumulation: Much like a reservoir filling drop by drop, major accomplishments in scholarship, wealth, and spiritual growth stem from uninterrupted, patient daily habits rather than sudden strokes of luck.

    3. Friend versus Foe: One's greatest enemy does not reside in the outer world but lives within the body as indolence (आलस्यम्); purposeful hard work (उद्यमः) remains an unfailing and faithful protector.

    SECTION 12: स्वावबोधनं परीक्षस्व | Check Your Understanding

विवरणम्: The feminine noun अप् (water) becomes अद्भिः in the instrumental plural (तृतीया बहुवचनम्).

    प्रश्नः ४ 'नास्त्युद्यमसमो बन्धुः' इति श्लोकांशस्य तात्पर्यं संक्षेपेण लिखन्तु। उत्तरम्: अस्मिन् संसारे परिश्रमेण तुल्यः कोऽपि हितैषी बन्धुः नास्ति, यतो हि उद्यमं कुर्वन् जनः कदापि दुःखं पश्चात्तापं वा न प्राप्नोति।

SECTION 13:स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | Five Things to Remember

    1. Subhāṣitas are wise, classical teachings crafted to cultivate personal ethics and guide responsible conduct.

    2. Social respect is anchored in the five 'V' traits: वस्त्रम् (clean dress), वपुः (healthy body), वाक् (sweet speech), विद्या (learning), and विनयः (humility).

    3. A seeker of true progress must abandon the six core obstacles: निद्रा, तन्द्रा, भयम्, क्रोधः, आलस्यम्, and दीर्घसूत्रता.

    4. The instrumental case (तृतीया विभक्तिः) indicates the specific means or tool through which an act or state of purification is accomplished.

    5. True growth mirrors the filling of a water pot—realised through patient, daily accumulation of knowledge, honest effort, and goodwill toward others.

    अतिरिक्ताध्ययनम् | Additional Learning

    अमरकोशस्य पर्यायपदानि | Synonyms from the Amarakosha

The textbook chapter features a supplementary excerpt from the ancient Sanskrit lexicon Amarakosha, providing authentic poetic synonyms for fundamental concepts used across the Subhāṣitas. For example, terms for the human body (गात्रम्, वपुः, संहननम्, शरीरम्), intellect (बुद्धिः, मनीषा, प्रज्ञा, मतिः), and the sun (दिवाकरः, भास्करः, प्रभाकरः) enrich a learner's literary understanding beyond conversational language.

    1. Learning classic synonyms from ancient lexicons helps students appreciate how Sanskrit poets select words that match meter and lyrical rhythm.

    2. Observing multiple names for human qualities, intellectual states, and nature deepens active vocabulary acquisition for reading higher Sanskrit texts.
