    SECTION 2 — About the Poet /

Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) was a highly regarded American poet. He is considered one of the most popular and critically respected American poets of the 20th century. Frost is widely recognized for his realistic depictions of rural life and his masterful command of American colloquial speech. Over his illustrious career, he received four Pulitzer prizes for poetry. In this particular poem, the poet beautifully describes a small, reflective incident occurring on a snowy evening, where a traveller is fascinated by the woods but is reminded of his worldly duties.

Exam Tip: Poet introduction may be asked as part of Poem Appreciation (5 marks) or as a short answer (2 marks).

    SECTION 3 — Full Text /

    Stanza 1

Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow.

    Stanza 2

My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.

    Stanza 3

He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake.

    Stanza 4

The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

    SECTION 4 — Stanza-wise Meaning /

    Stanza 1

Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow.

English Meaning: The poet stops near some beautiful woods and believes he knows the owner of the land. Since the owner lives in the village, the poet knows he will not be seen admiring the snow-covered trees in this isolated place.

Exam Tip: Questions regarding the setting of the poem and the owner's location are frequently asked from this stanza.

    Stanza 2

My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.

English Meaning: The poet feels that his horse must find it very strange to stop in the middle of nowhere. They have paused on the darkest evening of the year, surrounded only by dense woods and a frozen lake, with no farmhouse nearby for shelter.

Exam Tip: Look out for vocabulary questions here, especially the meaning of "queer" (strange).

    Stanza 3

He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake.

English Meaning: The anxious horse shakes his head, ringing his harness bells to check if his master has made a mistake by stopping here. The environment is perfectly silent; the only other sounds are the gentle blowing of the wind and the soft falling of snowflakes.

Exam Tip: The sensory details (sounds) are often asked as 2-mark descriptive questions from this stanza.

    Stanza 4

The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

English Meaning: Although the beautiful, dark woods tempt the poet to stay and enjoy nature, he realizes he cannot linger. He remembers the duties and promises he must fulfill, meaning he must travel a long distance before he can finally rest.

Exam Tip: This is the most important stanza for theme-based questions and the 'Message of the poem'.

    SECTION 5 — Poetic Devices /

Perseverance (चिकाटी) — Emphasised by the need to travel "miles to go" despite the harsh, freezing conditions.

    Central Message /

The poem teaches us that while the distractions of life may be beautiful and inviting, we must stay focused on our goals and fulfill our responsibilities before our time runs out.

    SECTION 7 — Poem Appreciation /

    Model Poem Appreciation (5 Marks)

The poem 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening' is written by Robert Frost. The title refers to a brief pause a traveller takes in a beautiful snow-covered forest during his journey.

The poem consists of 4 stanzas of 4 lines each.

RHYME SCHEME: The rhyme scheme of the first three stanzas is aaba, bbcb, and ccdc. However, the final stanza follows a dddd rhyme scheme to provide a strong conclusion.

    FIGURES OF SPEECH:

Personification: The poet uses Personification when he writes "My little horse must think it queer". Here, the horse is given the human ability to think.

Repetition: Repetition is seen in "And miles to go before I sleep". The line is repeated to emphasise the poet's long journey and duties.

Inversion: The poet uses Inversion in "Whose woods these are I think I know". The word order is changed for poetic rhythm.

THEME: The central theme of the poem is the conflict between the beauty of nature and the responsibilities of everyday life. The poet describes how he is mesmerised by the lovely, dark woods but ultimately realizes he must leave them behind to fulfill his promises before he 'sleeps' or dies.

FAVOURITE LINES: My favourite lines from the poem are: "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep," I like these lines because they teach a valuable life lesson. They remind me that no matter how tempting a distraction might be, I must always prioritize my goals and responsibilities.

    Favourite Lines: 2-3

    SECTION 8 — Extract-Based Questions /

Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks) Why does the poet's horse think it is strange to stop there? Answer: The horse thinks it is strange because there is no farmhouse nearby for shelter. They have stopped in an isolated place between the woods and a frozen lake on an extremely cold, dark evening.

    Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks)

What is the setting of the poem as described in this extract?

Answer: The poem is set in a rural, isolated area on the "darkest evening of the year". Extract 2

He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake.   The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

    (a) To scare away animals (b) To ask if there is a mistake

    (c) To keep warm (d) To wake up the poet

    Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks)

List the sounds mentioned in this extract.

Answer: There are three specific sounds mentioned in the extract. They are the ringing of the horse's harness bells, the gentle sweep of the easy wind, and the soft sound of the falling downy flakes (snow).

    Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks)

Why does the traveller have to leave the lovely woods?

Answer: The traveller is highly fascinated by the beauty of the dark woods and wants to stay. However, his rational mind reminds him of his worldly duties. He has to leave because he has promises to keep and a long journey ahead before he can rest.

    SECTION 9 — Short Answer Questions /

Q1. What time of the day and year is described in the poem?

Answer: The poem is set during the winter season, as evident from the snow filling the woods and the frozen lake. Specifically, it takes place in the evening, which the poet describes as the "darkest evening of the year".

Q2. How does the little horse draw his master's attention?

Answer: The little horse senses that something is wrong because they have stopped in a deserted place without a farmhouse. To draw his master's attention, the horse shakes his head, causing his harness bells to ring loudly, as if asking if a mistake has been made.

Q3. What do the 'promises' and 'sleep' signify in the final stanza?

Answer: In the context of the poem, "promises" signify the poet's duties, responsibilities, and obligations towards society. "Sleep" is a metaphor that signifies the end of a long day's work, and on a deeper level, it represents death or everlasting peace at the end of life's journey.

Q4. Identify and explain the figure of speech in: "The woods are lovely, dark and deep,"

Answer: The figure of speech used here is Alliteration. The consonant sound 'd' is repeated in the words 'dark' and 'deep' to create a poetic rhythm and emphasize the dense, mysterious nature of the forest.

    SECTION 10 — Long Answer Questions /

Q1. Explain the conflict in the poet's mind as described in the poem. How does he resolve it?

Answer: The poem beautifully captures the internal conflict between personal desire and worldly responsibilities. On his journey, the poet is completely captivated by the serene beauty of the snowy woods. He stops his horse to simply enjoy the peaceful, quiet atmosphere, which is entirely cut off from human society. His heart wishes to escape from the hardships of life and stay in the "lovely, dark and deep" woods. However, his rational mind and the sudden ringing of his horse's bells break his trance. The poet realizes that he cannot run away from reality. He resolves the conflict by reminding himself that he has "promises to keep". He accepts that he must travel a long distance and fulfill his duties before he can finally rest or sleep.

Q2. Write an appreciation of the poem 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening'.

Answer: 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening' is a renowned poem by the American poet Robert Frost. The title introduces a simple scene of a traveller pausing by a forest. The poem is structured in four stanzas of four lines each, with a highly rhythmic quality. The rhyme scheme for the first three stanzas is aaba, bbcb, ccdc, while the last stanza follows a powerful dddd pattern to create a lasting impact. The poet extensively uses poetic devices to enhance the imagery. Personification is used when the horse "asks if there is some mistake," and Alliteration is seen in "dark and deep". The central theme revolves around the temptation to abandon worldly duties in favour of nature's beauty, and the ultimate victory of responsibility over that temptation. My favourite lines are the final two: "And miles to go before I sleep.". They are deeply inspiring and serve as a constant reminder that we must stay focused and fulfill our goals before our time on earth is up.

यात Title, Poet, Rhyme Scheme, Figures of speech, Theme आणि Favourite lines हे सर्व मुद्दे सलग परिच्छेदात मांडले आहेत.
