    SECTION 2 — About the Author /

K.A. Abbas (1914-1987) was a prominent Indian film director, novelist, screenwriter, and journalist who wrote in Urdu, Hindi, and English. He is considered one of the pioneers of Indian parallel or neo-realistic cinema, and his films won National Awards. His writing often focused on the harsh realities of Indian society, fighting against social injustices and superstitions. In this moving story, "Bholi," he exposes the evils of gender discrimination and the dowry system, while beautifully illustrating the transformative power of education and a teacher's compassion.

    SECTION 4 — Summary /

The story revolves around a young girl named Sulekha, who is nicknamed 'Bholi' (the simpleton) because a childhood head injury left her a slow learner. She also stammered and had permanent pockmarks from smallpox. Neglected by her family, Bholi is eventually sent to the village school just to obey the Tehsildar's orders. There, a kind and affectionate teacher encourages her, completely transforming Bholi's confidence and teaching her to speak without stammering .

Years later, Bholi's parents arrange her marriage to a wealthy, older, and greedy grocer named Bishamber Nath . During the wedding, Bishamber sees Bholi's pockmarks and demands five thousand rupees as a dowry from her father, Ramlal . Ramlal is humiliated and pays the amount. However, Bholi refuses to marry the mean and greedy coward, throwing the wedding garland into the fire . Speaking flawlessly, she announces that she will stay unmarried, serve her parents in their old age, and teach in her school.

    SECTION 5 — Characters /

    1. Bholi (Sulekha): Bholi starts as an innocent, neglected, and frightened child who stammers and lacks confidence because she is constantly mocked. However, with the support of her teacher, she blossoms into a bold, educated, and self-respecting young woman. Her refusal to marry a greedy man who humiliated her father shows her strong willpower and independence.

    2. Ramlal (Father): Ramlal is a prosperous village official (Numberdar) who prioritizes social prestige ("izzat") over his daughter's happiness. He neglects Bholi and forces her into an unequal marriage just to save face. He lacks the courage to stand up against the dowry system until Bholi does it for him.

    3. The Teacher: She is the true catalyst of the story. Unlike Bholi's family, the teacher is incredibly soft, soothing, and encouraging. She treats Bholi with affection, wipes away her fear, and empowers her with education, acting as the architect of Bholi's new identity.

    4. Bishamber Nath: He is an older, limping, wealthy grocer with children from a previous marriage. He is hypocritical, mean, greedy, and a coward who tries to exploit Bholi's physical appearance to extort a dowry of five thousand rupees from Ramlal.

    SECTION 6 — Central Theme and Values /

    6A. Theme Table /

    Theme / विषय

Education completely transforms Bholi from a "dumb-driven cow" into a confident girl who demands respect.

    Evils of Dowry

Bishamber's blatant demand for 5000 rupees showcases the cruel reality of the dowry system.

    Gender Discrimination

Ramlal treats his sons well, but considers his disabled daughter a burden to be dumped on the school or an old groom.

    6B. Values /

    • Self-Respect (स्वाभिमान) — Bholi prefers to remain unmarried rather than suffer the humiliation of being sold to a greedy coward.

    • Compassion (सहानुभूती) — The teacher's gentle and loving tone works a miracle that scolding and neglect never could.

    • Courage (धैर्य) — It takes immense bravery for a village girl to stop her own wedding and speak back to her elders.

    6C. Central Message /

The story strongly highlights that a girl is not a burden or a "dumb cow." With love, support, and proper education, anyone can overcome physical setbacks and fight against social injustices like the dowry system.

Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks) Why were the relations and neighbours startled?

Answer: The relations and neighbours were entirely startled because the girl they had always known as a "dumb cow" and a "stammering fool" was suddenly speaking in a clear, loud voice. They were shocked by her immense courage to stop the wedding and by the fact that she spoke without the slightest stammer.

    SECTION 9 — Short Answer Questions /

Q1. Why was Sulekha called Bholi, the simpleton?

Answer: Sulekha was called Bholi because when she was ten months old, she fell off a cot on her head, which permanently damaged a part of her brain. As a result, she remained a backward child and a slow learner, earning the nickname 'Bholi, the simpleton'.

Q2. Why did Ramlal's wife agree to send Bholi to school?

Answer: Ramlal's wife strongly opposed girls' education, believing it ruined their marriage prospects. However, she agreed to send Bholi because Bholi had pockmarks, lacked intelligence, and had very little chance of getting married anyway. She thought they could dump the worry of handling her onto the school teachers.

Q3. How did the teacher encourage Bholi to overcome her stammering?

Answer: The teacher treated Bholi with extreme affection and patience. Instead of laughing at her like the others, she patted her gently and said, "Put the fear out of your heart and you will be able to speak like everyone else". This love and encouragement filled Bholi with new hope and eliminated her fear.

Q4. Why did Bholi refuse to marry Bishamber Nath?

Answer: Bholi refused to marry Bishamber Nath because he was a mean, greedy, and contemptible coward who humiliated her father by demanding five thousand rupees as a dowry for her pockmarks. She realized she deserved better than a heartless man who traded her dignity for money.

    SECTION 10 — Long Answer Questions /

Q1. Describe Bholi's transformation from a frightened "dumb cow" into a confident and courageous young woman. Highlight the role of her teacher in this change. Answer: Bholi's journey is a remarkable tale of transformation brought about by education and compassion. In her childhood, Bholi was a neglected, frightened child. Due to her pockmarks and stammering, her family treated her like a burden and a "dumb-driven cow". She lacked confidence, kept her head lowered in fear, and wept helplessly when asked her name. However, her life changed drastically when she entered school. Her teacher played the role of a true artist and guide. The teacher did not mock her; instead, she spoke in a soft, soothing voice, which touched Bholi's heart . By lovingly telling Bholi to take the fear out of her heart, the teacher gave her the gift of speech and self-respect. Years later, this education enabled Bholi to identify right from wrong. When the greedy groom Bishamber demanded a dowry and humiliated her father, Bholi did not act like a dumb cow. She boldly threw the garland into the fire and spoke fearlessly without stammering . She prioritized her dignity over a toxic marriage, proving she was now an empowered woman.

Q2. Discuss the social evils highlighted in the story "Bholi" and the message the author wishes to convey.

Answer: In the story "Bholi," K.A. Abbas powerfully highlights several severe social evils prevailing in Indian society. The foremost issue is the gross discrimination against the girl child. While Ramlal's sons are sent to the city for higher education, his daughters are merely groomed for marriage . Bholi, having physical imperfections, is treated even worse—like an unwanted burden. Another major evil exposed is the dowry system. Bishamber Nath, despite being an older widower with a limp, cruelly exploits Bholi's pockmarks to extort five thousand rupees from Ramlal . He humiliates the father, treating marriage as a business transaction. The author wishes to convey a strong message that these evils can only be eradicated through education and empowerment. Society often labels quiet or disabled girls as "dumb cows". However, the story proves that when a girl is armed with education, she gains the voice and courage to protect her own self-respect. Bholi's final decision to remain unmarried and serve her parents is a bold statement that a woman’s worth is not defined by her marriage or physical appearance, but by her character and independence.
