SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson
१. कक्षायां गणना-संवादः | Classroom Counting Dialogue
In the classroom, the teacher asks: छात्राः! अत्र कक्षायां भवन्तः कति जनाः सन्ति? (Students! How many of you are here in the classroom?). A student names everyone in the group (सुमितः, विश्वनाथः, वीणा... अहं च स्मः), and when asked to count (गणयतु), she repeats एकम्, एकम्, एकम्. To make counting in Sanskrit easy, the teacher sings a rhythmic संख्यागीतम्.
२. संख्यागीतम् (१ तः ५ पर्यन्तम्) | Numbers 1 to 5 in the Song
The first part of the song links numbers 1 to 5 with well-known things:
१ (एकः / एकम्): एकः सूर्यः (one sun), एकः चन्द्रः (one moon), एकं मानवकुलम् (one human family).
२ (द्वे): द्वे नयने (two eyes in every living being, helping all to see — द्रष्टुम्).
३ (त्रि): लोकशङ्करः त्रिनयनमूर्तिः (Lord Shiva has three eyes).
४ (चतुर्): चतुर्मुखः जगतः स्रष्टा (Brahma, creator of the world, has four faces).
५ (पञ्च): मम करकमले पञ्च अङ्गुलयः (five fingers on the hand that help us count).
३. संख्यागीतम् (६ तः १० पर्यन्तम्) | Numbers 6 to 10 in the Song
The second part continues from 6 to 10:
६ (षट् / षण्): सुरसेनानीः षण्मुखदेवः (Kartikeya has six faces and constantly protects the gods).
७ (सप्त): सप्ताहे सप्त वासराः (seven days in a week), सप्त स्वराः (seven musical notes: सा रे ग म प ध नि), सप्त लोकाः (seven worlds above and below), and सप्त ऋषयः (seven famous sages).
८ (अष्ट): अष्ट दिग्गजाः (eight mighty elephants of the directions supporting the earth).
९ (नव): विपुले गगने नव ग्रहाः (nine planets moving continuously in the vast sky).
१० (दश): पूर्वाद्याः दश दिशः (ten famous directions: पूर्वदिशा, पश्चिमदिशा, उत्तरदिशा, दक्षिणदिशा, ईशानदिशा, आग्नेयदिशा, नैर्ऋत्यदिशा, वायव्यदिशा, ऊर्ध्वम्, अधः).
४. १ तः ५० पर्यन्तं संख्याः | Counting from 1 to 50
After the song, the chapter presents numbers from १ (एकम्) to ५० (पञ्चाशत्). Once you know १ to १० and the tens — विंशतिः (२०), त्रिंशत् (३०), चत्वारिंशत् (४०), and पञ्चाशत् (५०) — you can easily read compound numbers like एकविंशतिः (२१), एकत्रिंशत् (३१), and एकचत्वारिंशत् (४१).
SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works
१. 'कति' इति प्रश्नवाचक-प्रयोगः (Asking "How Many?" with कति)
रूपम् | Pattern कति + बहुवचन-संज्ञा + सन्ति / भवन्ति ? → संख्यापदम् + बहुवचन-संज्ञा + सन्ति / भवन्ति।
अर्थः / Use The word कति means "how many?". It stays the same across all three genders. In the answer, we replace कति with the exact Sanskrit number.
उदाहरणम् | Example सप्ताहे कति वासराः भवन्ति? → सप्ताहे सप्त वासराः भवन्ति। कति दिशः सन्ति? → दश दिशः सन्ति।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember For numbers from ३ (त्रीणि) upwards, the noun and verb are always in बहुवचनम् (plural).
२. 'एक' शब्दस्य लिङ्गानुसारं प्रयोगः (Number 1 Matches Gender)
रूपम् | Pattern एकः + पुंलिङ्गम् | एकम् + नपुंसकलिङ्गम्
अर्थः / Use In the first stanza of the song, notice how the word for "one" changes its ending to match the gender of the noun it describes.
उदाहरणम् | Example एकः सूर्यः, एकः चन्द्रः (पुंलिङ्गम्)। एकं मानवकुलम्, एकं सुन्दरं संख्यागीतम्, एकं ब्रह्म (नपुंसकलिङ्गम्)।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Number १ is always singular (एकवचनम्), number २ is always dual (द्विवचनम् — यथा द्वे नयने, द्वे अयने), and numbers ३ and above are always plural (बहुवचनम्).
३. द्व्यङ्क-संख्या-निर्माणम् (How Two-Digit Numbers Are Built from 11 to 50)
रूपम् | Pattern एकक-संख्या (Unit: एक, द्वि/द्वा, त्रयस्/त्रयो...) + दशक-संख्या (Ten: दश, विंशतिः, त्रिंशत्, चत्वारिंशत्)
अर्थः / Use In Sanskrit two-digit numbers, the unit number comes first and the ten comes second (e.g., 1 + 10 = एकादश; 2 + 20 = द्वाविंशतिः; 5 + 30 = पञ्चत्रिंशत्).
उदाहरणम् | Example ११ = एकादश | २१ = एकविंशतिः | ३१ = एकत्रिंशत् | ४१ = एकचत्वारिंशत् १५ = पञ्चदश | २५ = पञ्चविंशतिः | ३५ = पञ्चत्रिंशत् | ४५ = पञ्चचत्वारिंशत्
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Pay special attention to १६ (षोडश), २६ (षड्विंशतिः), ३६ (षट्त्रिंशत्), and ४६ (षट्चत्वारिंशत्) where षट् joins with the following sound.
Observations:
From ५ (पञ्च) to १० (दश), the number word stays the same regardless of the gender of the noun (e.g., पञ्च अङ्गुलयः, सप्त वासराः, सप्त लोकाः, दश दिशः).
In उपस्थिति-पत्रम् (attendance roll), numbers can be stated directly against a student's name using कस्य/कस्याः उपस्थितिसंख्या का?
SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences
Pattern 1: संख्या-सहित-वाक्यरचना (Stating how many things exist in a place)
[स्थाने] + [संख्यापदम्] + [बहुवचन-संज्ञा] + सन्ति / भवन्ति। Example: मम हस्ते पञ्च अङ्गुलयः सन्ति। (There are five fingers on my hand.) गगने नव ग्रहाः सन्ति। (There are nine planets in the sky.) व्याकरणे त्रीणि वचनानि सन्ति। (There are three numbers in grammar.)
Pattern 2: 'कति' इति प्रश्नोत्तर-रचना (Asking and answering "how many")
______ कति ______ सन्ति / भवन्ति ? → ______ [संख्या] ______ सन्ति / भवन्ति। Example: भवतः परिवारे कति जनाः सन्ति? → मम परिवारे पञ्च जनाः सन्ति। सप्ताहे कति वासराः भवन्ति? → सप्ताहे सप्त वासराः भवन्ति।
Pattern 3: उपस्थितिसंख्या-कथनम् (Stating roll numbers from an attendance list)
[नाम-षष्ठी] + उपस्थितिसंख्या + [संख्यापदम्] (अस्ति)। Example: गणेशस्य उपस्थितिसंख्या एकम्। (Ganesha's roll number is one.) राधिकायाः उपस्थितिसंख्या षट्। (Radhika's roll number is six.)
Pattern 4: आज्ञा-वाक्यानि (Action instructions from the lemon-drink activity song)
[वस्तु] + योजयत / मेलयत / मन्थयत। Example: जम्बीररसं योजयत। (Add lemon juice.) लवणं गुडं च मेलयत। (Mix salt and jaggery.) शनैः शनैः मन्थयत। (Stir slowly.)
SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding
प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — कः त्रिनयनमूर्तिः अस्ति? (Who is the three-eyed deity?) उत्तरम्: लोकशङ्करः।
प्रश्नः २. अङ्कानां स्थाने संस्कृत-संख्यापदानि लिखत — (Write the Sanskrit number words for the given numerals) (क) १६ — ______ (ख) २५ — ______
उत्तरम्: (क) षोडश (ख) पञ्चविंशतिः
प्रश्नः ३. कोष्ठकात् उचितां संख्यां चित्वा रिक्तस्थानं पूरयत — (Fill in the blank with the appropriate Sanskrit number word) (क) कार्तिकेयस्य ______ मुखानि सन्ति। (पञ्च / षट् / सप्त) (ख) जीविनि सकले ______ नयने स्तः। (एकम् / द्वे / त्रीणि)
उत्तरम्: (क) कार्तिकेयस्य षट् मुखानि सन्ति। (ख) जीविनि सकले द्वे नयने स्तः।
प्रश्नः ४. पूर्णवाक्येन उत्तरत — अष्ट दिग्गजाः किं धरन्ति? (What do the eight elephants of the directions support?)
उत्तरम्: अष्ट दिग्गजाः धरणीं धरन्ति।
SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit
१. स्व-परिवारस्य सदस्य-गणना (Stating the number of members in your family):
When someone asks: भवतः परिवारे कति जनाः सन्ति? Reply with the Sanskrit number for your family: मम परिवारे चत्वारि (४) / पञ्च (५) / षट् (६) जनाः सन्ति।
२. कक्षायाम् उपस्थितिसंख्या-कथनम् (Saying your roll number in Sanskrit during attendance):
Instead of saying your roll number in English, speak the Sanskrit number from १ to ५० when the teacher calls your name: एकादश (११), अष्टादश (१८), चतुर्विंशतिः (२४), त्रिंशत् (३०).
३. गृहे पानक-निर्माण-गीतम् (Using Sanskrit while making lemon sharbat at home):
Count from एकम् to दश while preparing lemon water: हस्ते पात्रं, पात्रे वारि (water in the vessel), जम्बीररसं योजयत (add lemon juice), लवणं गुडं च मेलयत (mix salt and jaggery), शनैः शनैः मन्थयत (stir slowly).
SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember
कति is an unchanging question word used to ask "how many?" in Sanskrit (यथा — कक्षायां कति छात्राः सन्ति?).
The संख्यागीतम् connects numbers १ to १० with memorable cultural concepts: १ सूर्यः/चन्द्रः, २ नयने, ३ त्रिनयनमूर्तिः, ४ चतुर्मुखः स्रष्टा, ५ अङ्गुलयः, ६ षण्मुखदेवः, ७ वासराः/स्वराः/लोकाः/ऋषयः, ८ दिग्गजाः, ९ ग्रहाः, and १० दिशः.
The ten directions (दश दिशः) include the four main directions (पूर्व, पश्चिम, उत्तर, दक्षिण), four corners (ईशान, आग्नेय, नैर्ऋत्य, वायव्य), plus ऊर्ध्वम् (above) and अधः (below).
The tens from १० to ५० are दश (१०), विंशतिः (२०), त्रिंशत् (३०), चत्वारिंशत् (४०), and पञ्चाशत् (५०).
When forming compound numbers from ११ to ४९, the smaller unit number is placed before the ten (यथा — द्वादश = १२, द्वाविंशतिः = २२, द्वात्रिंशत् = ३२, द्विचत्वारिंशत् = ४२).
