    श्रेयः


    श्रेयः - धर्म्मम्। मुक्तिः। “धर्म्मार्थावुच्यते श्रेयः कामार्थो धर्म्म एव च ॥, मुमुक्षूणान्तु मोक्ष एव श्रेयः, शुभम्। श्रेयाञ्श्रेष्ठः पुष्कलः स्यात्सत्तमश्चातिशोभने ॥शुभयुक्ते


    अर्थः - श्रेयः इति शब्दः धर्मम् तथा च मुक्तिं दर्थयति। तथा च धर्मः, अर्थः, कामः मोक्षः च एते पुरुषार्थाः मनुष्यजीवनस्य आधाराः सन्ति। तेषां साधनं एव श्रेयः। ये मानवाः विवाहस्य पश्चात् गृहस्थस्य धर्मं स्वीकुर्वन्ति तेषां कृते पुरुषार्थः एव श्रेयः। किन्तु ये मोक्षम् इच्छन्ति तेषां कृते मोक्षः एव श्रेयः। श्रेयः नाम यत् यत् शुभम्  अस्ति तत् सर्वम्। श्रेष्ठता, विपुलता, अतिशोभनत्त्वम् च एते अपि श्रेयः इत्येव शब्दस्य अर्थाः।


    Meaning - "The word 'श्रेयः' (śreyas) signifies both 'dharma' (righteousness) and 'moksha' (liberation). Additionally, 'dharma,' 'artha' (wealth), 'kama' (desire), and 'moksha' (liberation) are the four goals of human life (purusharthas) and are the foundations of human existence. The pursuit of these goals is considered 'śreyas' (the good or the ultimate good). For those who, after marriage, accept the duties of a householder, the pursuit of these goals is indeed 'śreyas' (the path of the good). However, for those who desire liberation, 'moksha' alone is considered 'śreyas'. The term 'śreyas' encompasses all that is auspicious and beneficial. It also denotes excellence, abundance, and supreme beauty."


    सङ्कर्षणः


    सङ्कर्षणः - सङ्कर्षणः¦, पुं, (सम्यक् कर्षतीति । सं + कृष् + ल्युः ।)


    सङ्कर्षणः इति बलरामः। श्रीकृष्णस्य अग्रजः बलरामः। निद्रात्मिकां मायां प्रति भगवान् विष्णुः वदति, “सप्तमोदेवकीगर्भः यः अंशः सौम्यो ममाग्रजः। ससंक्रामयितव्यस्ते सप्तमे मासे रोहिणीम्। सङ्कर्षणात्तुगर्भस्य स तु सङ्कर्षणो युवा। भविव्यत्यग्रजो भ्राता ममशीतांशुदर्शनः।”


    एषः शब्दः विष्णुसहस्रनामसु अपि आगच्छति अतः विष्णुः इति अपि तस्य एकः अर्थः। वयं तु जानीमः यत् बलरामः तु विष्णोः शेषनागः एव अस्ति। अतः विष्णोः एव अंशः। तेनैव सङ्कर्षणः इति नाम बलरामः तथा विष्णुः इति अर्थद्वयं प्रकटयति। 


    Meaning -


    Sankarshana is Balarama. Balarama is the elder brother of Shri Krishna. Addressing the sleep-inducing illusion (Yoga Maya), Lord Vishnu says, "The seventh child of Devaki, who is a gentle part of me, my elder brother, is to be transferred in the seventh month to Rohini. From the transfer of the womb, he is known as Sankarshana. He will be my elder brother, the one with the cool and pleasant appearance."


    This word (Sankarshana) also appears in the Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names of Vishnu), and thus, Vishnu is also one of its meanings. We know that Balarama is indeed the incarnation of Vishnu's serpent, Shesha. Therefore, he is a part of Vishnu. Hence, the name Sankarshana signifies both Balarama and Vishnu, revealing these two meanings.



    श्रीनिवासः


    श्रीनिवासः - श्रियः निवासः आश्रयस्थानम्।  'नित्योपघ्ननिवासत्वात् श्रीनिवासः श्रियः स्मृतः'निरुक्तिः। लक्ष्मीमातुः निवासः सर्वदा विष्णुहृदये भवति तथा विष्णुचरणे अपि भवति। अतः श्रीनिवासः इति विष्णोः हृदयम् अथवा चरणौ। इतः अपि एकः अर्थः सम्भवति लक्ष्मीमातुः निवासस्थानं नाम वैकुण्ठम्। अतः तदपि अर्थः विचारणीयः। विष्णुसहस्रनामसु एकं नाम श्रीनिवासः इति अस्ति , 'श्रीदः श्रीशः श्रीनिवासः श्रीनिधिः श्रीविभावनः' । अतः श्रीनिवासशब्दस्य अर्थः भगवान् विष्णुः अपि भवति। 


    English Meaning - The abode of the goddess. The etymology of the term 'श्रीनिवासः' (Śrīnivāsaḥ) is explained as 'He who is the eternal abode of Lakshmi.' Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, always resides in the heart of Lord Vishnu and also at His feet. Therefore, 'Śrīnivāsaḥ' refers to either the heart or the feet of Vishnu. Another possible meaning can be derived, where 'the residence of Lakshmi' also signifies Vaikuntha, the eternal abode of Vishnu. Hence, that meaning is also worth considering. In the Vishnu Sahasranama, one of the names of Vishnu is 'Śrīnivāsaḥ,' as in the verse: 'श्रीदः श्रीशः श्रीनिवासः श्रीनिधिः श्रीविभावनः' (Śrīdaḥ, Śrīśaḥ, Śrīnivāsaḥ, Śrīnidhiḥ, Śrīvibhāvanaḥ). Therefore, 'Śrīnivāsaḥ' also refers to Lord Vishnu.
