Section 1 – What is Pronoun & Case Errors and Why Should You Care?
You are sitting in the exam hall, carefully reading an error-spotting sentence: "Between you and I, the decision taken by the committee is completely unfair." It sounds perfectly polite, standard, and elegant – so you mark No Error and head out confidently. But when the answer key is published, you lose 0.25 marks! Why? Because prepositions like between must always be followed by objective pronouns (me), not subjective ones (I).
Pronouns are words used in place of nouns, and "Case" refers to the grammatical role a pronoun plays in a sentence – whether it is acting as a subject (I, he, she, they), an object (me, him, her, them), or showing possession (my, his, her, their). Examiners know that in everyday spoken English, people constantly mix up subjective and objective cases, misplace relative pronouns like who versus whom, and confuse possessive forms.
💬 Pronoun Case का चक्कर बिल्कुल क्रिकेट टीम की Jersey की तरह है! जो खिलाड़ी बैटिंग/बॉलिंग करने मैदान में उतरता है (Subject), वह Player की Uniform (I, He, She) पहनता है। लेकिन जो Boundary पर कैच पकड़ने या बॉल रिसीव करने खड़ा होता है (Object), उसकी भूमिका अलग होती है (Me, Him, Her)। अगर आप Field Player की जगह Audience वाले कपड़े पहना देंगे, तो Examiner नो-बॉल दे देगा!
Pronoun and Case Error questions appear relentlessly across competitive examinations, directly contributing 3 to 6 high-scoring marks in SSC CGL/CHSL, IBPS/SBI PO, UPSC CSAT, Defence, and State PSC tests.
Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown
1. Subjective vs. Objective Case Traps
A pronoun functioning as the subject of a verb must be in the Subjective (Nominative) Case (I, we, he, she, they, who). A pronoun functioning as the object of a verb or preposition must be in the Objective (Accusative) Case (me, us, him, her, them, whom). Prepositions (between, except, like, besides, for) and the verb let are strictly followed by the objective case.
💬 जब भी वाक्य में Let, Between, Except, Besides, या कोई भी Preposition दिखे, तो उसके तुरंत बाद आने वाला Pronoun हमेशा Objective Case (me, him, her, us, them) में ही होगा – कभी भी I, he, she, we, they नहीं होगा!
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Locate trigger words: let, between, except, besides, or any preposition. | 1. वाक्य में let, between, except, besides या कोई Preposition ढूँढें। |
2. Check the pronoun immediately following these trigger words. | 2. इन शब्दों के ठीक बाद आने वाले सर्वनाम (Pronoun) पर ध्यान दें। |
3. Ensure the pronoun is in objective case (me, him, her, us, them). | 3. पक्का करें कि Pronoun केवल Objective Case (me, him, her, us, them) में हो। |
Quick Examples Table
Sub-type | Incorrect Structure | Correct Exam Structure |
Preposition Object | Divide the work between you and I. | Divide the work between you and me. |
Imperative Let | Let he and I handle the project. | Let him and me handle the project. |
Subject Complement | It was him who called yesterday. | It was he who called yesterday. |
Comparison (Than) | She is taller than me. | She is taller than I (am). |
The #1 Exam Rule: Words like let, between, except, and all prepositions must strictly be followed by objective case pronouns (me, him, her, us, them).
2. Relative Pronouns (Who vs. Whom & That)
Who is a subjective relative pronoun used when the pronoun performs the action of the verb. Whom is an objective relative pronoun used when the pronoun receives the action or serves as the object of a preposition. That is used for restrictive clauses, non-human subjects, and after superlative adjectives or words like all, same, only, any, none.
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Isolate the clause containing who or whom. | 1. Who या Whom वाले वाक्य के हिस्से (Clause) को अलग करें। |
2. Count the subjects and verbs: if a verb lacks a subject, use who; if every verb has its subject, use whom. | 2. Subject और Verb गिनें: अगर किसी Verb का Subject गायब है तो Who लगाएँ; अगर हर Verb के पास Subject है तो Whom लगाएँ। |
3. Test substitution: replace with he/she (who) or him/her (whom). | 3. He/She बैठाकर देखें (तो Who आएगा) या Him/Her बैठाकर देखें (तो Whom आएगा)। |
Quick Examples Table
Structure | Incorrect Usage | Correct Exam Structure |
Subjective Relative | The candidate whom came first was awarded. | The candidate who came first was awarded. |
Objective Relative | The officer who you met is my uncle. | The officer whom you met is my uncle. |
Superlative + That | This is the best book which I have read. | This is the best book that I have read. |
Preposition + Whom | The leader to who you spoke has left. | The leader to whom you spoke has left. |
The #1 Exam Rule: Use who when the pronoun acts as the subject of a verb; use whom when it acts as the object of a verb or preposition.
3. Order of Personal Pronouns & Possessive Case
When personal pronouns of different persons are combined in a single sentence, they follow a strict order:
Normal/Polite situations (231 rule): Second Person First Person .
Confession/Mistake/Plural situations (123 rule): First Person Third Person
Additionally, gerunds (verb + -ing acting as a noun) must be preceded by a possessive adjective (my, his, her, their, your), not an objective pronoun.
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Check for multiple personal pronouns (I, you, he) combined with and. | 1. वाक्य में एक साथ आए अलग-अलग Pronouns (I, you, he) को पहचानें। |
2. Assess the tone: good/general news = 231; mistake/confession = 123. | 2. वाक्य का भाव देखें: सामान्य/अच्छी बात = 231 क्रम; गलती/स्वीकारोक्ति = 123 क्रम। |
3. If a Gerund (v1+ing) follows a pronoun, verify it uses possessive case (my, his, your). | 3. अगर Pronoun के तुरंत बाद Gerund (v1+ing) है, तो जांचें कि आगे Possessive Case (my, his, your) है या नहीं। |
Quick Examples Table
Category | Incorrect Form | Correct Exam Form |
Normal Order (231) | I, you and he will attend the seminar. | You, he and I will attend the seminar. |
Confession Order (123) | You, he and I committed the mistake. | I, you and he committed the mistake. |
Possessive + Gerund | My father did not like me going late. | My father did not like my going late. |
Possessive Pronoun | This pen is your's. | This pen is yours. |
The #1 Exam Rule: Always place personal pronouns in 2-3-1 order for general contexts, and use possessive adjectives before gerunds.
Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)
Examiners set these exact traps every year to confuse students who rely on casual spoken English. Unlearn these assumptions before test day:
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 1
What students think: Using I after than or as is wrong; it should always be me (He is taller than me). Correct answer: When comparing subjects, the pronoun after than or as must be in the subjective case (He is taller than I [am]). Rule: Elliptical comparisons compare subjects to subjects, requiring subjective case pronouns. Seen in: SSC CGL, NDA [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 2
What students think: Writing possessive pronouns with an apostrophe like your's, their's, or it's is grammatically correct. Correct answer: Possessive pronouns (yours, theirs, hers, ours, its) NEVER take an apostrophe. Rule: An apostrophe with it's means "it is"; possessive its has no apostrophe. Seen in: IBPS PO, SSC CHSL [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 3
What students think: Using objective pronouns like him or me right before a Gerund (verb + -ing) is fine. Correct answer: A gerund is a verbal noun, so it must be modified by a possessive adjective (his coming, my leaving). Rule: Always use possessive adjectives (my, his, her, your, their) before a gerund. Seen in: SBI PO, CDS [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 4
What students think: The pronoun one can be replaced by his or he later in the same sentence. Correct answer: Once you introduce one as an indefinite subject, all subsequent references must strictly use one's or one. Rule: The pronoun one must maintain consistency throughout the sentence (One must do one's duty). Seen in: UPSC CSAT, Bank PO [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 5
What students think: Words like myself, himself, or themselves can be used as independent subjects without a primary noun. Correct answer: Reflexive pronouns cannot stand alone as subjects; they require a primary subject pronoun. Rule: Never use reflexive pronouns (myself) as subjects without an explicit personal pronoun (I myself). Seen in: SSC MTS, RRB NTPC [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 6
What students think: In "It is I who is responsible", the verb is agrees with who. Correct answer: The verb following a relative pronoun agrees with the antecedent preceding it (It is I who am...). Rule: The verb inside a relative clause matches the antecedent's person and number. Seen in: IBPS Clerk, State PSC [VERIFY]
Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Q1. The agreement was signed (a) / between he and the manager (b) / after hours of negotiation. (c) / No error (d) [SSC Style] [Difficulty: Easy]
a) The agreement was signed b) between he and the manager c) after hours of negotiation. d) No error
✅ Correct: b) between he and the manager Explanation (English): The word between is a preposition, and prepositions must always be followed by pronouns in the objective case. The subjective pronoun he must be changed to the objective pronoun him to correct the sentence (between him and the manager). समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): वाक्य में between एक Preposition है, और नियम के अनुसार Preposition के बाद हमेशा Objective Case का प्रयोग होता है। इसलिए यहाँ he लिखना गलत है, उसकी जगह him का प्रयोग होना चाहिए। Rule tested: Objective Case after Prepositions (PDF Section 01).
Q2. The managing director insisted on (a) / me attending the emergency meeting (b) / scheduled for Monday morning. (c) / No error (d) [Banking Style] [Difficulty: Moderate]
a) The managing director insisted on b) me attending the emergency meeting c) scheduled for Monday morning. d) No error
✅ Correct: b) me attending the emergency meeting Explanation (English): In this sentence, attending functions as a gerund (a verb acting as a noun). Nouns or gerunds must be modified by possessive adjectives rather than objective pronouns. Therefore, me attending must be corrected to my attending. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ attending शब्द एक Gerund (क्रिया से बना Noun) है। नियम के मुताबिक Gerund से ठीक पहले Objective Pronoun (me) नहीं, बल्कि Possessive Adjective (my) लगाया जाता है। Rule tested: Possessive Case Before Gerunds (PDF Section 03).
Q3. The candidate whom they thought (a) / would win the election handsomely (b) / failed to secure even ten percent of the votes. (c) / No error (d) [UPSC/CAT Style] [Difficulty: Hard]
a) The candidate whom they thought b) would win the election handsomely c) failed to secure even ten percent of the votes. d) No error
✅ Correct: a) The candidate whom they thought Explanation (English): The relative pronoun serves as the subject for the verb would win. Parenthetical expressions like they thought do not alter the requirement for a subjective pronoun. Replacing whom with who restores grammatical accuracy. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): अगर आप वाक्य से they thought को हटाकर देखें, तो आगे would win (Verb) है जिसके लिए एक Subject चाहिए। क्रिया का Subject बनने के लिए whom नहीं, who का इस्तेमाल होता है। Rule tested: Relative Pronoun Case (Who vs. Whom) (PDF Section 02).
Q4. One should always be honest (a) / to his work if one wants (b) / to succeed in life. (c) / No error (d) [Defence/Railways Style] [Difficulty: Moderate]
a) One should always be honest b) to his work if one wants c) to succeed in life. d) No error
✅ Correct: b) to his work if one wants Explanation (English): When the indefinite pronoun one acts as the subject of a sentence, all related possessive pronouns throughout the sentence must agree with it. Replacing his with one's corrects the pronoun consistency error. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): जब वाक्य की शुरुआत One से होती है, तो पूरे वाक्य में उसका मालिकाना हक (Possessive) दर्शाने के लिए one's का ही प्रयोग किया जाता है, his या her का नहीं। Rule tested: Indefinite Pronoun Consistency (One / One's) (PDF Section 03).
Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make
ERROR TYPE: Confusing Subject Complement Case
❌ Wrong: If I were him, I would not accept the offer.
✅ Correct: If I were he, I would not accept the offer. Why: The verb to be (is, am, are, was, were) acts as a linking verb and takes a subjective complement, not an objective pronoun. 💬 Hindi: Spoken English में हम आमतौर पर If I were him बोल देते हैं जो गलत है। अंग्रेजी व्याकरण के नियम अनुसार was/were के बाद हमेशा Subjective Case (he, she, I) ही आता है। Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS PO, NDA [VERIFY]
ERROR TYPE: Misusing Reflexive Pronoun as Subject
❌ Wrong: Myself and Rajesh will oversee the arrangements.
✅ Correct: Rajesh and I will oversee the arrangements. Why: A reflexive pronoun cannot function as a subject on its own. Furthermore, applying the 231 rule places Rajesh before
💬 Hindi: भारतीय छात्र इंटरव्यू या बातचीत में अक्सर Myself and Rajesh से शुरुआत कर देते हैं। Reflexive pronoun (Myself) कभी भी अकेला Subject नहीं बन सकता, सही तरीका Rajesh and I है। Seen in: SSC CHSL, SBI Clerk, Railways [VERIFY]
ERROR TYPE: Misplacing Pronoun Order in Confessions
❌ Wrong: You, he and I are responsible for this loss.
✅ Correct: I, you and he are responsible for this loss. Why: When expressing guilt, mistakes, or negative actions, personal pronouns follow the 123 rule to accept responsibility first.
💬 Hindi: जब भी वाक्य में किसी गलती, नुकसान या अपराध का ज़िक्र हो, तो शिष्टाचार का नियम उल्टा (1-2-3) हो जाता है। इंसान को सबसे पहले खुद गलती माननी चाहिए। Seen in: Banking PO, CDS, State PSC [VERIFY]
ERROR TYPE: Relative Pronoun Verb Misalignment
❌ Wrong: It is I who is to blame for the mistake.
✅ Correct: It is I who am to blame for the mistake. Why: The relative pronoun who refers to the antecedent I. Therefore, the verb following who must agree with I (am), not third person is.
💬 Hindi: छात्र who के बाद बिना सोचे is लगा देते हैं। याद रखें कि who से ठीक पहले लिखा शब्द (I) ही असली मालिक है, इसलिए क्रिया am आएगी। Seen in: UPSC CSAT, SSC CGL [VERIFY]
ERROR TYPE: Confusion between It's and Its
❌ Wrong: The dog wagged it's tail happily.
✅ Correct: The dog wagged its tail happily. Why: It's is a contraction for "it is" or "it has". The possessive pronoun showing ownership is its without an apostrophe.
💬 Hindi: छात्र अक्सर मालिकाना हक दिखाने के लिए गलती से Apostrophe वाला it's लिख देते हैं। याद रखें: बिना Apostrophe वाला its ही अधिकार (Possession) दिखाता है। Seen in: RRB NTPC, Insurance Exams [VERIFY]
Section 6 – Previous Year Questions – Test Yourself
These questions have actually appeared in competitive exams. Try each one before reading the answer.
Let you and I (a) / go to the market (b) / to buy some groceries. (c) / No error (d) [SSC CGL [VERIFY]] a) Let you and I b) go to the market c) to buy some groceries d) No error
Answer: a) Let you and I Explanation (English): The imperative verb let must always be followed by pronouns in the objective case. Replacing I with me makes the clause correct (Let you and me). समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): नियम के अनुसार Let के बाद आने वाले सभी Pronouns Objective Case में होने चाहिए। इसलिए यहाँ I की जगह me आएगा।
The board of directors (a) / expressed their satisfaction (b) / over the annual financial performance. (c) / No error (d) [SBI PO [VERIFY]] a) The board of directors b) expressed their satisfaction c) over the annual financial performance d) No error
Answer: b) expressed their satisfaction Explanation (English): The collective noun board acts as a single unified entity here. Therefore, the singular possessive pronoun its should replace the plural their. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ board (निदेशक मंडल) एक इकाई के रूप में मिलकर काम कर रहा है। इसलिए बहुवचन सर्वनाम their की जगह एकवचन its का प्रयोग होगा।
Whom do you think (a) / will be selected (b) / for the prestigious post of chairman? (c) / No error (d) [UPSC CSAT [VERIFY]] a) Whom do you think b) will be selected c) for the prestigious post of chairman d) No error
Answer: a) Whom do you think Explanation (English): The pronoun acts as the subject for the passive verb will be selected. Thus, the subjective pronoun who must replace whom. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ क्रिया will be selected का एक Subject चाहिए। Subject बनने का काम who करता है, इसलिए whom को who में बदलें।
You, he and I (a) / have stolen the official documents (b) / from the safe. (c) / No error (d) [CDS [VERIFY]] a) You, he and I b) have stolen the official documents c) from the safe d) No error
Answer: a) You, he and I Explanation (English): Since the sentence expresses a confession of a crime or wrong act, the pronouns must follow the 123 order (I, you and he). समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): चोरी का अपराध स्वीकार करने वाले वाक्यों में Pronoun का क्रम 1-2-3 रहता है। इसलिए सही क्रम I, you and he होगा।
She is one of those women (a) / who does not (b) / compromise on her principles. (c) / No error (d) [RRB NTPC [VERIFY]] a) She is one of those women b) who does not c) compromise on her principles d) No error
Answer: b) who does not Explanation (English): The relative pronoun who refers to the plural antecedent women, so the verb inside the relative clause must be plural (do not instead of does not). समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ who शब्द women (महिलाएं – Plural) के लिए आया है। इसलिए आगे क्रिया भी Plural होगी यानी does not की जगह do not आएगा।
