    SECTION 2 — About the Author /

Guy de Maupassant was a highly renowned 19th-century French author, universally celebrated as a master of the short story genre. He is famous for his realistic writing style, depicting the daily lives, desires, and struggles of ordinary French citizens. His stories often feature clever plot twists and deep psychological insights. "The Necklace" is one of his most famous works, and this chapter is an adapted version of that classic tale.

    SECTION 4 — Summary /

English Summary: "The Necklace" is the story of Mathilde Loisel, a pretty but deeply dissatisfied woman born into a family of clerks. She is married to a minor official and constantly suffers because she desires a life of luxury, grand mansions, and rich jewels. When her husband brings an invitation to a grand Ministry party, she complains about having nothing to wear. Her husband gives her money for a dress, and she borrows a superb diamond necklace from her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier. Mathilde is a huge success at the party but loses the necklace on her way home. To replace it, the couple borrows heavily and buys a similar diamond necklace for thirty-six thousand francs. They spend the next ten years living in miserable poverty to pay off the terrible debt. Finally, after paying everything, Mathilde meets Madame Forestier and confesses the truth, only to discover that the original borrowed necklace was a fake worth merely five hundred francs.

    SECTION 5 — Characters /

    • Mathilde Loisel: She is a pretty and charming woman who is highly ambitious but deeply discontented with her middle-class life. She dreams of luxury, resents her shabby house, and is driven by uncontrolled desire to be admired. Ultimately, her vanity leads her to ten years of miserable drudgery.

    • Monsieur Loisel: He is a minor official at the Ministry of Education. He is a simple, loving, and considerate husband who sacrifices his savings (meant for a hunting gun) just to buy his wife a party dress. He faithfully works extra jobs for ten years to help pay off her massive debt.

    • Madame Forestier (Jeanne): She is Mathilde's wealthy former schoolmate from the convent. She is generous enough to lend her jewellery without hesitation. At the end, she is deeply moved and honest enough to reveal that her necklace was actually a cheap imitation.

    SECTION 6 — Central Theme and Values /

    6A. Theme Table /

    Theme / विषय

    How it appears

    Vanity and Greed (गर्व आणि हाव)

Mathilde's endless desire for luxuries and a palatial mansion makes her deeply resentful of her actual life.

    The Deception of Appearances

The central object—the necklace—appears to be made of real, expensive diamonds but is actually a cheap imitation, symbolizing how chasing fake appearances ruins real lives.

    Consequences of Choices (निर्णयांचे परिणाम)

A single night of borrowed glory costs the Loisels ten brutal years of severe poverty and drudgery.

    6B. Values /

    • Contentment (समाधान) — We must learn to be happy and content with whatever we have, rather than weeping with regret over unreachable luxuries.

    • Honesty (प्रामाणिकपणा) — If Mathilde had simply been honest and confessed the loss of the necklace immediately, she would have learned it was a fake and saved ten years of her life.

    • Sacrifice and Hard Work (त्याग आणि कष्ट) — Monsieur Loisel perfectly illustrates immense sacrifice by giving up his savings and working late nights to support his wife's mistake.

    6C. Central Message /

The story powerfully warns us against the dangers of vanity, false pride, and hiding the truth. It teaches us that true happiness lies in contentment, and that a single moment of pretending to be someone we are not can ruin our entire life.

She had no means of becoming known, understood, loved or be wedded to an aristocrat; and so she let herself be married to a minor official at the Ministry of Education. She dressed plainly, because she had never been able to afford anything better. She suffered endlessly, feeling she was entitled to all the luxuries of life. She suffered because of her shabby, poorly furnished house. All these things, that another woman of her class would not even have noticed, tormented her and made her resentful.

    Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks)

    • Question: Why did Mathilde dress plainly and suffer endlessly?

Answer: Mathilde dressed plainly because she was born into a family of clerks and could never afford anything better. However, she suffered endlessly because she strongly felt she was entitled to all the luxuries of life, and her shabby, poorly furnished house constantly tormented her.

    Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks)

    • Question: What does the phrase "born, as if by an error of fate" imply about Mathilde?

Answer: This phrase implies that Mathilde was extraordinarily pretty, elegant, and charming, qualities usually associated with high-class aristocrats. She strongly believed she deserved a rich, luxurious life, but fate completely mismatched her desires by placing her in an ordinary family of poor clerks.

    Extract 2:

From then on, Madame Loisel knew the horrible life of the very poor. But she played her part heroically. The dreadful debt must be paid. She would pay it. They dismissed their maid; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof. She came to know the drudgery of housework, the odious labours of the kitchen. She washed the dishes, the dirty linen, she carried the garbage down to the street every morning, and carried up the water, stopping at each landing to catch her breath and dressed like a commoner. She had to bargain at markets, quarrel and face insults over every miserable sou.

Q.(A)(i) — State True or False: (2 marks)

    1. Madame Loisel lived a horrible life of the very poor. — True

    2. They kept their maid to help with the extra work. — False

Q.(A)(ii) — Choose the correct alternative: (2 marks)

    1. What did the Loisels rent?

      (a) A palatial mansion (b) A garret under the roof (c) A hotel room (d) A shop

      Answer: (b)

    2. The phrase 'drudgery of housework' refers to:

      (a) Fun cooking (b) Hard, boring, and tiring daily chores (c) Hiring a maid (d) Buying vegetables

      Answer: (b)

    Q.(B)(i) — Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks)

    • Question: What actions did the Loisels take to pay off the dreadful debt?

    • Answer: To pay off their dreadful debt, the Loisels dismissed their maid and moved out of their house into a small garret under the roof. Mathilde heroically took up all the heavy household drudgery, while her husband worked extra every evening doing accounts and copying manuscripts.

    Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks)

    • Question: How does this extract highlight a massive change in Mathilde's character?

Answer: Earlier in the story, Mathilde was incredibly vain, delicate, and constantly wept over not having a luxurious, comfortable life. However, this extract shows her suddenly transforming into a strong, hardworking woman who heroically accepts her mistake. She abandons her false pride, dresses like a commoner, and aggressively quarrels over every 'sou' in the market to save money.

    SECTION 9 — Short Answer Questions /

Q1. Why did Mathilde weep with misery after visiting her rich schoolmate?

    • Answer: Mathilde wept with extreme regret, despair, and misery after visiting her wealthy schoolmate, Madame Forestier, because it painfully reminded her of her own poverty. Seeing her friend's rich dresses, jewels, and luxurious life made Mathilde intensely jealous and deeply frustrated about her own shabby, ordinary existence.

Q2. How did Monsieur Loisel prove that he was a very loving and considerate husband?

    • Answer: Monsieur Loisel proved his love by constantly trying to make Mathilde happy. Even though he had saved exactly four hundred francs to buy a hunting gun for himself, he immediately gave that entire amount to his wife so she could buy a beautiful dress for the Ministry party.

Q3. What was the horrible twist revealed at the end of the story?

    • Answer: The horrible twist at the end is that the beautiful diamond necklace Mathilde borrowed from Madame Forestier was actually a cheap, fake imitation. While the Loisels spent ten agonizing years in extreme poverty paying back thirty-six thousand francs for a real diamond replacement, the original necklace was worth merely five hundred francs.

Q4. What would you do if you accidentally lost something valuable that belonged to your friend?

    • Answer: If I accidentally lost something valuable belonging to my friend, I would instantly go to them and confess the absolute truth. I would apologize sincerely and ask them how I could replace or repay it. Hiding the truth, as Mathilde did, only creates massive misunderstandings and ruins lives unnecessarily.

    SECTION 10 — Long Answer Questions /

Q1. Draw a detailed character sketch of Mathilde Loisel, explaining how her vanity led to her ultimate downfall.

    • Answer: Mathilde Loisel is the tragic central character whose life is completely defined by her vanity, pride, and unrealistic desires. She is naturally pretty and elegant, but deeply unhappy because she feels fate wrongly placed her in a poor family of clerks. She obsessively dreams of palatial mansions, rich dresses, and sparkling jewels, completely ignoring the sincere love of her hardworking husband. Her obsession with looking wealthy forces her to borrow the diamond necklace for the Ministry party, simply to be admired and envied by others. When she loses it, her false pride prevents her from telling her friend the truth. Instead of confessing, she takes on a ruinous debt, which forces her to spend ten brutal years doing horrible kitchen drudgery. Ultimately, her relentless pursuit of a fake, luxurious appearance completely destroys her youth, her beauty, and her entire life, proving that unchecked greed always leads to downfall.

Q2. Write a comprehensive summary of "The Necklace" highlighting its core message about truth and contentment.

    • Answer: "The Necklace" is a powerful story about Mathilde, a middle-class woman married to a clerk, who desperately desires a luxurious aristocratic life. When invited to a grand Ministry party, she complains about her clothes until her husband buys her a nice dress. To look even more elegant, she borrows a brilliant diamond necklace from her rich friend, Madame Forestier. Mathilde dances wildly and enjoys her triumph, but tragically discovers she has lost the necklace on the way home. Afraid to confess the truth, she and her husband borrow thirty-six thousand francs to buy a real replacement. They endure ten long years of horrific physical drudgery, living in a garret and taking up multiple jobs to clear the debt. After paying everything off, a now old-looking Mathilde meets Madame Forestier and reveals the truth. She is left absolutely stunned when her friend reveals the original necklace was a mere imitation worth only five hundred francs. The core message of the story is profound: if Mathilde had simply been content with her life or had the courage to tell the truth immediately, she would never have ruined her life for a fake piece of jewellery.
