    Section 3: Full Text /

Stanza 1 Rise, brothers, rise; the wakening skies pray to the morning light, The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night. Come, let us gather our nets from the shore and set our catamarans free, To capture the leaping wealth of the tide, for we are the kings of the sea!
Stanza 2 No longer delay, let us hasten away in the track of the sea gull's call, The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother, the waves are our comrades all. What though we toss at the fall of the sun where the hand of the sea-god drives? He who holds the storm by the hair, will hide in his breast our lives.
Stanza 3 Sweet is the shade of the coconut glade, and the scent of the mango grove, And sweet are the sands at the full o' the moon with the sound of the voices we love; But sweeter, O brothers, the kiss of the spray and the dance of the wild foam's glee; Row, brothers, row to the edge of the verge, where the low sky mates with the sea.

    Section 4: Stanza-wise Meaning /

    Stanza 1:

"Rise, brothers, rise... for we are the kings of the sea!"

English Meaning: The poet urgently calls out to the fishermen to wake up as the morning light breaks and the wind is calm, resting like a sleeping child after a stormy night. She urges them to quickly gather their nets and free their catamarans to catch the abundant fish, reminding them proudly that they are the rulers of the ocean. Exam Tip: Often asked in exams: Identify the comparison used for the wind and what "leaping wealth" refers to.

    Stanza 2:

"No longer delay... will hide in his breast our lives."

English Meaning: The fishermen must hurry and follow the guiding call of the sea gull. They share a deep, familial bond with nature, considering the sea as their mother, clouds as brothers, and waves as friends. They have absolutely no fear of evening storms because they trust the powerful sea-god to protect their lives. Exam Tip: Focus on the specific familial metaphors (mother, brother, comrades) for short answer questions.

    Stanza 3:

"Sweet is the shade... where the low sky mates with the sea."

English Meaning: While the cool shade of coconut glades, the scent of mango groves, and relaxing on moonlit sands are certainly sweet and comforting, the fishermen find even greater joy in the adventurous sea spray and wild foam. They eagerly row out to the extreme horizon (the verge) where the sky seems to meet the sea. Exam Tip: Expect a 2-mark question asking to compare the 'Landscape' (land) with the 'Seascape' (ocean).

    Section 7: Poem Appreciation /

    Model Poem Appreciation (5 Marks)

The poem 'Coromandel Fishers' is written by the renowned poet Sarojini Naidu.

The title beautifully suggests that the poem focuses on the lives, struggles, and culture of the brave fishermen living along the Coromandel Coast of India.

The poem consists of 3 stanzas of 4 lines each.

RHYME SCHEME: The rhyme scheme of the poem is aabb for every stanza. (e.g., light-night, free-sea).

    FIGURES OF SPEECH:

    1. The poet uses Simile in 'The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night'. The early morning calm wind is compared to a sleeping baby.

    2. The poet uses Metaphor in 'The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother'. The sea and clouds are directly compared to loving family members.

    3. The poet uses Personification in 'the wakening skies pray to the morning light'. The sky is given the human action of praying.

THEME: The central theme of the poem is the fishermen's courageous life and their beautiful, familial bond with nature. The poet describes how they love the adventurous, wild sea spray much more than the comforting, safe life on the sandy shores.

FAVOURITE LINES: My favourite lines from the poem are: "The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother, the waves are our comrades all." I like these lines because they perfectly express how the fishermen do not fear the dangerous ocean; instead, they respect it deeply as their own protective family.

    Section 8: Extract-Based Questions /

    Extract 1

Rise, brothers, rise; the wakening skies pray to the morning light, The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night. 3. The fishermen use catamarans to go into the sea. — True

    4. The skies are praying to the dark night. — False

Q.(A)(ii) Choose the correct alternative: (2 marks)

    1. The phrase 'leaping wealth of the tide' refers to ________. (a) gold coins in the water (b) the fish in the sea (c) the waves (d) the catamarans Answer: (b)

    2. What does the poet ask the fishermen to gather from the shore? (a) sea shells (b) their nets (c) coconut leaves (d) sand Answer: (b)

Q.(B)(i) Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks) Why does the poet ask the fishermen to rise and set their catamarans free early in the morning?

Answer: The poet asks the fishermen to wake up early because the morning light has arrived and the weather is perfectly calm. They must quickly gather their nets and free their catamarans so they can sail out to capture the fish, which is their rightful wealth as the kings of the sea.

Q.(B)(ii) Answer in 3-4 sentences (Personal Response): (2 marks) Why do you think early morning is the best time for hard work?

Answer: Early morning is the best time for hard work because the environment is peaceful, fresh, and free from the daily hustle. Like the calm wind described in the poem, our minds are also rested and energized after a good night's sleep, allowing us to focus entirely on our goals.

    Extract 2

No longer delay, let us hasten away in the track of the sea gull's call, The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother, the waves are our comrades all. What though we toss at the fall of the sun where the hand of the sea-god drives? He who holds the storm by the hair, will hide in his breast our lives.

Q.(A)(ii) Choose the correct alternative: (2 marks)

    1. The fishermen consider the cloud to be their ________. (a) father (b) mother (c) brother (d) comrade Answer: (c)

    2. Who holds the storm by the hair? (a) the sea gull (b) the sea-god (c) the fishermen (d) the cloud Answer: (b)

Q.(B)(i) Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 marks) Why are the fishermen not afraid of the setting sun or the upcoming storms?

Answer: The fishermen are not afraid of the setting sun (the fall of the sun) or turbulent storms because they have absolute faith in the sea-god. They believe that the same God who controls the wild storms (holds the storm by the hair) will safely hide and protect their lives in his breast.

Q.(B)(ii) Answer in 3-4 sentences (Personal Response): (2 marks) How does having faith in something or someone help us in difficult times?

Answer: Having strong faith gives us mental strength and courage to face impossible challenges. Just as the fishermen fearlessly face the ocean storms by trusting the sea-god, faith eliminates our anxiety, keeps us hopeful, and allows us to focus on our work rather than worrying about the dangers.

    Section 9: Short Answer Questions /

    (2-3 marks · 3-5 sentences)

Q1. Explain the meaning of the line: "The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night."

Answer: In this line, the poet beautifully describes the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the early morning. Just as a baby who has cried violently all night eventually falls into a deep, exhausted sleep in its mother's arms, the strong winds that blew wildly throughout the night have now become completely still at dawn.

Q2. What is the poet's message to the fishermen in the last stanza regarding the land and the sea?

Answer: The poet acknowledges that life on land is extremely sweet, filled with the comforting shade of coconut glades, the scent of mango groves, and the company of loved ones on moonlit sands. However, she urges the fishermen to realize that the wild sea spray and the dancing foam are much sweeter. She motivates them to choose the thrilling adventure of the sea over the comforts of the land.

Q3. Identify and explain the figure of speech in "The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother".

Answer: The figure of speech used here is Metaphor. The poet makes a direct, implied comparison between the elements of nature and human family members. By calling the sea a mother and the cloud a brother, she highlights the deep, nurturing, and inseparable bond the fishermen share with their natural environment.

Q4. What does this poem teach you about facing challenges? (Personal Response) Answer: This poem teaches us to face challenges with immense courage and a sense of brotherhood. The fishermen do not let the fear of storms stop them from earning their livelihood; instead, they trust their skills and their God. Similarly, we should embrace the "storms" in our lives fearlessly and view them as exciting adventures rather than terrifying obstacles.

    Section 10: Long Answer Questions /

    (4-5 marks · 8-10 sentences)

Q1. Write a complete Poem Appreciation for "Coromandel Fishers" using the standard points.

Answer: The poem 'Coromandel Fishers' is an inspiring and highly rhythmic piece written by Sarojini Naidu, famously known as the Nightingale of India. The poem consists of three stanzas, each containing four lines.

The rhyme scheme followed throughout the poem is consistently 'aabb'. The poet has enriched the poem with several figures of speech. A prominent example is the Simile used in "The wind lies asleep... like a child that has cried all night," which compares the early morning wind to an exhausted, sleeping infant. She also uses Metaphor extensively, directly calling the sea a mother and the clouds brothers to show the fishermen's kinship with nature.

The central theme of the poem is the adventurous life, unwavering courage, and harmonious relationship of the fishermen with the sea. It contrasts the comforting beauty of the land with the thrilling, wild call of the ocean. My favourite lines are: "He who holds the storm by the hair, will hide in his breast our lives," because they perfectly capture the fearless attitude and absolute faith the fishermen have in the sea-god's protection.

      • Rhyme scheme 'aabb'

Q2. Describe the life, attitude, and courage of the Coromandel fishers based on the poem. How do they view the sea and the storms?

Answer: The poem paints a vivid and heroic picture of the Coromandel fishers' daily life and their extraordinary attitude. Their day begins before sunrise, showing their immense dedication and hard work as they gather their nets and set their catamarans free into the vast ocean. Instead of seeing themselves as mere workers, they possess a proud attitude, confidently calling themselves the "kings of the sea" who go out to capture its leaping wealth.

Their perspective on the sea and storms is what makes them truly courageous. To ordinary people, the ocean is dangerous, but the fishermen view it as their nurturing family. They revere the sea as their mother, clouds as brothers, and waves as trusted comrades.

Furthermore, they exhibit absolute fearlessness towards the forces of nature. Even when they toss on the waves at sunset, they do not panic about the incoming darkness or violent storms. They firmly believe that the sea-god, who possesses the ultimate power to control the wild storms, will act as their protector and safely hide their lives in his breast.
