    Assessment

    School-level examination following MSBSHSE guidelines

    Section 2: About the Author /

(This chapter is an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic, the Iliad. No specific modern author is mentioned in the textbook, as it retells classical mythology.)

The story of the Trojan War originates from ancient Greek mythology, most famously recounted in the epic poem The Iliad, traditionally attributed to the blind Greek poet Homer. The narrative blends history and legend, detailing a devastating ten-year siege that ended not through brute force, but through one of the most famous acts of military deception in history: the Trojan Horse.

    Section 3: Summary /

Part I: Troy was a rich, well-protected trading city situated near the Aegean Sea. A ten-year war erupted when Paris, a Trojan prince, persuaded Helen, the wife of the Greek king Menelaus, to elope with him to Troy. To seek revenge, the Greeks laid siege to the city. Despite great daily battles and the deaths of brave heroes like the Trojan Hector and the Greek Achilles, neither side could achieve victory, and the siege dragged on endlessly.

Part II: The Greeks finally took Troy not by force, but by a cunning trick devised by Odysseus. They built a massive hollow wooden horse, hid their best fighters inside, and pretended to sail away. A lone Greek left behind tricked the Trojans into believing the horse was an offering to the sea-god. Ignoring their priest's warnings, the joyful Trojans broke down their own city walls to drag the massive horse inside. That night, the hidden Greeks crept out, opened the gates for their returning army, and mercilessly burned Troy to the ground, killing or enslaving its people and reclaiming Helen.

    Section 4: Characters /

    1. Paris

Paris is a prince of Troy whose actions trigger the entire ten-year war. He persuaded Helen, the wife of the Greek king Menelaus, to elope with him to Troy, bringing total disaster upon his city. He was later killed by a poisoned arrow during the war.

    2. Helen and Menelaus

Helen is the wife of the Greek king Menelaus. Her elopement with Paris caused the Greeks to lay siege to Troy. When Troy fell, King Menelaus rushed through the burning city to find her. Despite her shame, he forgave her, believing the goddess Aphrodite had manipulated her heart.

    3. Odysseus

Odysseus is the cunning and wise Greek leader who finally broke the ten-year deadlock. Realizing that Troy could not be taken by force, he masterminded the brilliant trick of the giant wooden horse, which ultimately led to the total destruction of Troy.

    Section 5: Key Points /

    • POINT 1: Troy was a highly prosperous trading city, protected by broad, impenetrable walls and the natural barrier of Mount Ida.

    • POINT 2: The war began because Prince Paris of Troy eloped with Helen, the wife of Greek King Menelaus.

    • POINT 3: Great heroes fell during the ten-year siege, including the Trojan hero Hector and the invincible Greek hero Achilles (killed by an arrow to his heel).

    • POINT 4: Odysseus devised a plan to build a hollow wooden horse, hide soldiers inside, and pretend the Greek army had surrendered and sailed away.

    • POINT 5: The Trojans recklessly ignored their priest's warning, broke their own walls to drag the horse inside, and celebrated their "peace," leading to their midnight slaughter.

    Theme / विषय

How it appears in the text

    Brains Over Brawn (ताकदीपेक्षा युक्ती श्रेष्ठ)

A ten-year military siege failed to breach Troy's walls, but Odysseus's clever wooden horse trick brought the city down in a single night.

The Danger of Overconfidence (अतिआत्मविश्वासाचा धोका)

The Trojans were so delighted to see the Greeks gone that they recklessly ignored their priest's warning and broke their own defensive walls.

The Devastation of War (युद्धाचा विनाश)

The text vividly describes the tragic fate of Troy: leaping flames, weeping women, and the death or enslavement of the royal family.

    6B. Values /

    • Vigilance (सतर्कता): The Trojans let their guard down to celebrate, proving that one must remain vigilant even when danger seems to have passed.

    • Wisdom/Cunning (चातुर्य): Odysseus demonstrates that strategic thinking and innovation can overcome seemingly impossible physical barriers.

    • Forgiveness (क्षमा): Despite a ten-year war caused by Helen's actions, King Menelaus ultimately forgives her, showing restraint and compassion.

    6C. Central Message /

    The fall of Troy teaches us that enemies are often most dangerous when they pretend to retreat; unchecked excitement and ignoring wise warnings can lead to total disaster.

    Section 8: Extract-Based Questions /

    Extract 1 (From Part I)

"But all the kings and heroes of Greece had declared war against the Trojans, because Paris, a prince of Troy, had persuaded Helen, wife of a Greek king Menelaus, to elope with him. He had brought her to Troy. The Greeks wanted to take revenge on Troy for the wrong done to Menelaus. They sailed to Troy and laid siege to the city. The Trojans, too, fought hard and the siege continued for ten long years. The fighting went on daily, but the siege did not end. On the one hand, the Greeks could not take the city, and on the other hand the Trojans could not force them to sail away. Every day the Trojans came out of their gates, and the Greeks came out of their tents and ships, and the fighting went on. Sometimes there were great battles between the two armies. Sometimes there were single fights between two great heroes."

Q.(B)(i) Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 Marks) Why did the kings and heroes of Greece declare war against the Trojans?

Answer: The Greek kings declared war to take revenge against Troy. They were angry because Paris, a Trojan prince, had persuaded Helen, the wife of the Greek King Menelaus, to elope with him and brought her to Troy.

    Q.(B)(ii) Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 Marks)

Do you think wars are a good solution to solve problems between nations? (Personal Response)

Answer: No, wars are never a good solution. As seen in the ten-year siege of Troy, war causes massive destruction, loss of great lives on both sides, and endless suffering for innocent citizens. Diplomatic talks and peaceful negotiations are always better ways to resolve conflicts without shedding blood.

    Extract 2 (From Part II)

"The Trojans were delighted to hear this. 'The Greeks have gone,' they said, 'and the walls are no longer necessary. Let us make a hole in the wall and drag the horse in.' Their wise priest warned them not to do so. 'It may be a trick that will ruin us,' he said. 'You will bring disaster on the city if you break down the walls.' But they were so excited that they paid no attention to his words. They broke down part of their strong wall in order to drag the horse in. All that day the Trojans feasted and drank and celebrated. After all their celebrations, they went to sleep and slept soundly. But that day of rejoicing was soon followed by a night of terror and death."

Q.(A)(i) State True or False: (2 Marks)

    1. The Trojans believed that the Greeks had gone away. — True

    2. The wise priest encouraged the Trojans to break down the wall. — False

    3. The Trojans paid strict attention to the priest's warning. — False

    4. The day of celebration ended in a night of terror and death. — True

    मराठी टीप: पुजाऱ्याने भिंत तोडण्यास विरोध केला होता (warned them not to do so), पण ट्रोजनांनी त्याच्या इशाऱ्याकडे लक्ष दिले नाही (paid no attention).

Q.(A)(ii) Choose the correct alternative: (2 Marks)

    1. Why did the Trojans make a hole in their wall? (a) To let the Greeks inside (b) To drag the huge wooden horse into the city (c) To escape from the city (d) To build a new gate Answer: (b)

    2. What did the priest fear the wooden horse was? (a) A gift from the gods (b) A beautiful monument (c) A trick that would ruin them (d) A new type of weapon Answer: (c)

Q.(B)(i) Answer in 2-3 sentences: (2 Marks) What did the Trojans do after dragging the wooden horse into the city?

Answer: After dragging the massive horse inside, the highly excited Trojans believed the war was finally over. All that day, they feasted, drank, and celebrated their apparent freedom, and eventually went to sleep soundly, completely unaware of the impending disaster.

    Q.(B)(ii) Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 Marks)

Why is it important to listen to the advice of wise and experienced people? (Personal Response)

Answer: Wise and experienced people can often foresee dangers that we might miss because of our excitement or ignorance. If the Trojans had listened to their wise priest, their city would not have burned down. Listening to elders helps us avoid reckless mistakes and protects us from unseen disasters.

    Section 9: Short Answer Questions /

    (2-3 marks · 3-5 sentences)

Q1. Explain how the location of Troy helped it grow into a rich and prosperous city.

Answer: Troy was perfectly situated in Asia Minor near a narrow sea, making it excellent for both commerce and agriculture. In the front, the sea allowed ships to carry goods and grain for trade. At the back, Mount Ida provided well-watered, fertile valleys for growing corn and rich meadows for feeding cattle and sheep, ensuring extreme prosperity.

Q2. How did Odysseus plan to defeat the Trojans?

Answer: The cunning Odysseus planned to take Troy by a brilliant trick rather than by force. He suggested building a massive hollow wooden horse to hide their best fighters inside. The rest of the Greek army would burn their tents and pretend to sail away, deceiving the Trojans into bringing the horse inside their walls, allowing the hidden soldiers to attack the sleeping city at night.

Q3. How did the cunning Greek explain the presence of the large wooden horse?

Answer: The captured Greek soldier told the Trojans a false tale, claiming the Greeks had sailed away out of fear and left the horse as an offering to the sea-god. He cunningly explained that it was made intentionally huge so the Trojans could not drag it inside their gates, because if they did, the luck would pass from the Greeks to the Trojans.

Q4. What distressing sounds and sights could be witnessed at Troy on that fateful night?

Answer: When the Greeks attacked at midnight, Troy transformed into a scene of utter terror. The night sky was brightly lit by leaping flames as palaces, houses, and temples burned to the ground. The air was filled with distressing sounds: the shouting of warriors, the clashing of weapons, and the tragic cries of weeping women being carried off as slaves.

    Section 10: Long Answer Questions /

    (4-5 marks · 8-10 sentences)

Q1. Describe in detail how the Greek fleet returned and the hidden soldiers captured the city of Troy.

Answer: The Greek army executed Odysseus’s masterful plan with flawless precision. During the day, their ships had pretended to sail away but had actually anchored just out of sight behind a nearby island, waiting patiently for darkness. Meanwhile, the overly excited Trojans dragged the wooden horse into their city, celebrated their false peace, and went into a deep, drunken sleep.

In the dead of night, the Greek fleet silently sailed back, led by Agamemnon’s ship bearing a red light high on its mast as a signal. A Greek spy who had stayed behind crept up to the wooden horse and gave the signal. A secret door in the horse opened, allowing Odysseus and his best fighters to climb out into the sleeping city.

These soldiers swiftly moved to the city walls and opened the massive gates from the inside. The entire Greek army poured into the defenseless city. They immediately set fire to towers and palaces, slaughtering the unprepared Trojan soldiers in their beds, marking the brutal end of the ten-year siege and the total destruction of Troy.

Q2. Summarize the tragic end of Troy, focusing on the fate of its royal family and the central message of the story.

Answer: The night of Troy's fall was marked by unimaginable terror and devastation. The proud, rich city that had successfully resisted the Greeks for ten years was reduced to ashes in a matter of hours. Taken completely by surprise in their sleep, the Trojan soldiers were brutally slaughtered before they could even seize their weapons.

The fate of the Trojan royal family was particularly tragic. Old King Priam was killed alongside all his brave sons. The women, including Hector’s old mother, wife, and sister, suffered a cruel fate as they were captured and dragged away to become slaves for the conquerors. Ironically, Helen, the cause of the war, was found by Menelaus, who forgave her and took her back home.

The central message of this tragedy warns against reckless overconfidence. The Trojans brought disaster upon themselves because they ignored the wise warnings of their priest and let their guard down out of sheer excitement. It proves that clever strategy and cunning often overcome brute strength, and that enemies are most dangerous when they offer "gifts."
