"Guru and God both appear before me. To whom should I prostrate? I bow before Guru who introduced God to me."
This beautiful sentiment encapsulates the essence of Teacher's Day in India. It's a day when we express our deepest gratitude to those who have not just shared knowledge but also ignited a lifelong love for learning. On this special occasion, let's explore the significance of Teacher's Day in India and delve into a heartwarming Indian story that celebrates the bond between a teacher and a student.
The Significance of Teacher's Day in India
Teacher's Day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September each year, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher, scholar, and India's second President. Dr. Radhakrishnan's deep reverence for education and teachers inspired the nation to honor educators on this day.
It's a day when students express their appreciation for their teachers, often through heartfelt messages, gifts, and special performances. Educational institutions across the country organize various events to mark the occasion, acknowledging the pivotal role of teachers in shaping the future.
A Timeless Indian Tale: The Story of Eklavya
In the heart of ancient India, there lived a young boy named Eklavya. Eklavya was born to a tribal community, far from the luxuries of a palace or the guidance of a traditional guru. Yet, he possessed a burning desire to master the art of archery, a skill that was highly regarded in his time.
Eklavya's determination led him to the forest, where he crafted a clay idol of Dronacharya, a renowned archery guru of the time. He considered this idol as his mentor and, with unwavering devotion, began to practice archery day and night.
Eklavya's talent soon caught the attention of Dronacharya, who was astonished by the young boy's skills. However, upon learning that Eklavya had no formal training and had learned solely through his clay idol, Dronacharya faced a dilemma. He realized that Eklavya's dedication and skill were unparalleled, and he feared that Eklavya might surpass even his own royal students.
In a moment of decision, Dronacharya asked Eklavya for his "guru dakshina" (a token of gratitude a student offers to their teacher upon completing their training). Eklavya, with the utmost respect, agreed to offer whatever Dronacharya desired.
Dronacharya made a difficult request. He asked for Eklavya's right thumb, the very digit that allowed Eklavya to draw his bow with such precision. Eklavya, without hesitation, cut off his thumb and presented it to his guru.
Eklavya's sacrifice demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his teacher and his passion for archery. It also showcases the profound respect and devotion students in ancient India held for their gurus. His story continues to be a symbol of dedication, humility, and the timeless guru-shishya (teacher-student) bond in Indian culture.
A Heartfelt Tribute to Teachers
