Section 1 – What are Common Spelling Errors and Why Should You Care?

You are sitting in the exam hall, scanning through a question that asks you to spot a misspelt word or select the correct spelling out of four confusing options. They all look correct at first glance, but a single misplaced letter or missing double consonant costs you the mark. This is why mastering Common Spelling Errors is vital for your exam success!

Spelling errors in English usually occur due to silent letters, double consonants, confusing vowel combinations (like ie versus ei), homophones, and irregular word formation rules. Because English borrows heavily from Latin, French, Greek, and Germanic languages, its spelling rarely follows strict one-to-one phonetic rules.

This core topic is tested directly across competitive exams like SSC CGL, IBPS PO, and UPSC CSAT.

Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown

Here is everything you need to know about spelling rules and high-frequency exam words.

    Sub-type 1: The "I before E" Rule & Its Exceptions

The classic spelling rule states: "I before E except after C, or when sounded as 'A' (as in neighbor and weigh)."

    💬 "नियम है: सामान्यतः i को e से पहले लिखा जाता है (Achieve, Believe)। लेकिन अगर यह c के ठीक बाद आए, तो e को i से पहले लिखा जाता है (Receive, Ceiling)."

    How to Apply Rule (English)

    कैसे लागू करें? (Hindi)

    1. Normal Sound (ee): Use IE Believe, Achieve, Relief, Thief.

    1. सामान्य 'ई' ध्वनि: IE का प्रयोग करें  Believe, Achieve.

    2. After Letter 'C': Use EI  Receive, Receipt, Ceiling, Deceive.

    2. 'C' अक्षर के बाद: EI का प्रयोग करें  Receive, Receipt.

    3. Sounded like 'AY': Use EI  Neighbor, Weigh, Freight, Vein.

    3. 'ए' (AY) ध्वनि वाले शब्द: EI का प्रयोग करें  Neighbor, Weigh.

    • The #1 Exam Rule: Always double-check words following 'C' or producing an 'A' sound to apply the correct ie or ei sequence.

    Sub-type 2: Double Consonant Rules

When adding suffixes starting with a vowel (like -ed, -ing, -er, -able) to a single-syllable word ending in a Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant.

    💬 "जब किसी शब्द के अंत में Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (व्यंजन-स्वर-व्यंजन) आए, तो उसमें प्रत्यय (Suffix) जोड़ते समय आखिरी अक्षर को डबल (Double) कर दिया जाता है। जैसे: Run + ing = Running; Occur + ed = Occurred."

Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)

Examiners love setting specific spelling traps using words that sound logical when spelled incorrectly.

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP 1:

Maintenance vs Maintain What students think: Since the verb is Maintain, the noun must be Maintainance. Correct answer: The correct spelling is Maintenance (the middle vowel ai changes to e). Rule: Maintain (Verb)  Maintenance (Noun). Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS PO [VERIFY]

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP 2:

Pronunciation vs Pronounce What students think: Since the verb is Pronounce, the noun is Pronounciation. Correct answer: The correct spelling is Pronunciation (the oun drops to un). Rule: Pronounce (Verb)  Pronunciation (Noun). Seen in: IBPS PO, UPSC Mains [VERIFY]

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP 3:

Committee (The Triple Double Trap) What students think: Only double 'm' or double 't' is required (Comittee or Commitee). Correct answer: Committee has three sets of double letters: double 'm', double 't', double 'e'. Rule: Co + mm + i + tt + ee. Seen in: SSC CHSL, NDA [VERIFY]

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP 4:

Mischievous (The Extra "I" Trap) What students think: It is pronounced and spelt "Mischievious". Correct answer: Mischievous (3 syllables: mis-chiv-ous). There is NO 'i' after the 'v'. Rule: Ends in -vous, not "-vious". Seen in: CAT, CUET, CDS [VERIFY]
