Section 1 – What is Error Spotting and Why Should You Care?
Imagine sitting in the exam hall, scanning an error-spotting question. A sentence looks completely smooth, reads beautifully, and feels perfectly correct to your ear – yet the official answer key marks it wrong! Why does this happen? Because Indian competitive exams do not test conversational fluency; they test precise structural rules. Relying on "what sounds right" is the single biggest trap candidates fall into.
Error spotting is the art of pinpointing grammatical, structural, or diction-related errors within a given sentence. Whether it involves subject-verb disagreement, tense inconsistency, faulty prepositions, or inverted modifier placement, examiners intentionally design sentences that exploit standard spoken English habits. Mastering error spotting requires switching from intuitive reading to a systematic rule-checking approach.
💬 "Error spotting बिल्कुल उस तरह है जैसे चाय बनाते वक्त उसमें गलती से चीनी की जगह नमक डाल देना। बाहर से देखने में चाय बिल्कुल सही लगेगी, पर जैसे ही आप स्वाद (Grammar Rules) चेक करेंगे, गलती तुरंत पकड़ी जाएगी। Spoken English में ऐसी गलतियां छुप जाती हैं, लेकिन Examiner वहीं नमक ढूँढने बैठा है!"
Error spotting and sentence correction questions account for 4 to 8 critical marks across major competitive examinations like SSC CGL/CHSL, IBPS/SBI PO & Clerk, UPSC CSAT, Defence, and State PSC exams.
Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown
Here is everything you need to know about error spotting. We have broken it down into specific rules and sub-types so you can spot the examiner's tricks instantly.
Sub-Topic 2.1: Subject-Verb Agreement Rules
A) Definition: A verb must always agree with its subject in number (singular or plural) and person. Indefinite pronouns like each, every, everyone, neither, and either strictly take singular verbs regardless of the prepositional phrase following them.
💬 "जब भी वाक्य में Each, Every, Neither, या Either दिखे, तो दिमाग में बिठा लें कि क्रिया (Verb) हमेशा सिंगुलर (is, was, has, v1+s/es) ही होगी, चाहे उनके बाद Plural Noun ही क्यों न आया हो।"
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Locate indefinite pronouns like each, every, neither, or either. | 1. वाक्य में each, every, neither, या either जैसे शब्दों को ढूंढें। |
2. Ignore any plural noun inside a "one of the / each of the" phrase. | 2. "Each of the / Neither of the" के बाद वाले Plural Noun को देखकर भ्रमित न हों। |
3. Ensure the main verb following the subject is strictly singular. | 3. जांचें कि आगे आने वाली मुख्य क्रिया (Verb) सिंगुलर रूप में है या नहीं। |
Quick Examples Table:
Category | Incorrect Structure | Correct Exam Structure |
Indefinite Pronoun | Each of the candidates have signed. | Each of the candidates has signed. |
Choice Operator | Neither of the options are valid. | Neither of the options is valid. |
Collective Unity | The committee have given its verdict. | The committee has given its verdict. |
Plural Quantity | Two miles are a long distance to walk. | Two miles is a long distance to walk. |
The #1 Exam Rule: Words like each, every, everyone, neither, and either must always be followed by a singular verb.
Sub-Topic 2.2: Tense Consistency & Conditionals
A) Definition: Maintain tense consistency within a clause sequence. In conditional clauses referring to future actions, the conditional clause (if, when, as soon as) stays in the Simple Present tense, while the main clause uses the Simple Future tense. Furthermore, auxiliary did must strictly pair with a base verb.
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Spot condition markers like if, provided, unless, or when. | 1. वाक्य में if, unless, provided, या when जैसे शर्त वाले शब्दों को पहचानें। |
2. Verify if two future events are linked in one conditional framework. | 2. देखें कि क्या भविष्य की दो घटनाओं को एक साथ जोड़ा गया है। |
3. Check that the if clause uses Simple Present and does NOT contain will/shall. | 3. पक्का करें कि if वाले हिस्से में will याशल का प्रयोग न हो (वहाँ Simple Present रहेगा)। |
Quick Examples Table:
Structure | Incorrect Usage | Correct Exam Structure |
Future Conditional | If he will call me, I will respond. | If he calls me, I will respond. |
Auxiliary Past | She did not went to the center. | She did not go to the center. |
Past Consistency | He worked hard and succeeds. | He worked hard and succeeded. |
Past Perfect Sequence | Before he arrived, the train left. | Before he arrived, the train had left. |
The #1 Exam Rule: Never use will, shall, or would inside the conditional (if) clause when expressing future conditions.
Sub-Topic 2.3: Uncountable Nouns & Noun Usage
A) Definition: Uncountable nouns represent mass concepts, abstract ideas, or categories. They do not possess a plural form (no ending -s or -ies) and strictly take a singular verb. Additionally, indefinite articles (a, an) cannot directly precede them.
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Identify category or mass nouns such as scenery, furniture, advice, luggage. | 1. Scenery, furniture, advice, luggage जैसे पूरी कैटेगरी दर्शाने वाले शब्दों को पहचानें। |
2. Apply the number test: check if adding numbers directly before the word sounds improper. | 2. शब्द के आगे सीधे संख्या (जैसे 'दो') लगाकर देखें; अगर अर्थ बिगड़े तो वह Uncountable है। |
3. Ensure no plural ending (-s) is attached and the verb is singular. | 3. पक्का करें कि शब्द में -s न जुड़ा हो और क्रिया सिंगुलर ही हो। |
Quick Examples Table:
Noun Category | Incorrect Form | Correct Exam Form |
Mass Noun | The sceneries of Kashmir are breathtaking. | The scenery of Kashmir is breathtaking. |
Advice/Information | He gave me many advices. | He gave me much advice (or pieces of advice). |
Equipment | All equipments were tested. | All equipment was tested. |
Hyphenated Noun | A five-miles walk. | A five-mile walk. |
The #1 Exam Rule: Uncountable nouns like scenery, furniture, advice, luggage, and equipment never take an -s or plural verbs.
Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)
Examiners set the exact same structural traps year after year to exploit standard reading speed and spoken English habits.
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 01
What students think: Uncountable nouns can be pluralized by adding -s or -ies when referring to multiple items. Correct answer: Use the base uncountable singular form (scenery, furniture, information). Rule: Uncountable nouns cannot take plural forms or plural verbs. Seen in: SSC CGL, NDA
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 02
What students think: Since both actions occur in the future, using will in both clauses of a conditional sentence is correct. Correct answer: Use Simple Present in the conditional clause and Simple Future in the main clause. Rule: Subordinate conditional clauses starting with if or when cannot take future auxiliaries. Seen in: IBPS PO, SSC CHSL
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 03
What students think: The correlative conjunction no sooner can be followed by when or then. Correct answer: No sooner must strictly pair with than. Rule: Correlative conjunction no sooner requires than, whereas hardly and scarcely take when. Seen in: SBI PO, RRB NTPC
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 04
What students think: Verbs like discuss, describe, or reach require a preposition like about or to after them. Correct answer: Transitive verbs take direct objects without intervening prepositions. Rule: Do not place prepositions after transitive verbs like discuss, comprise, or order. Seen in: CDS, SSC CGL
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 05
What students think: In inverted negation structures, place the auxiliary verb after the subject. Correct answer: Place the auxiliary verb before the subject (Hardly had I reached...). Rule: Negative adverbs starting a sentence demand inverted auxiliary–subject word order. Seen in: IBPS Clerk, UPSC CSAT
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 06 What students think: Adjectives ending in -ly are always adverbs. Correct answer: Words like friendly, cowardly, and miserly are adjectives; their adverb forms are in a friendly manner, etc. Rule: Distinguish between modifier functions; do not use base adjectives to modify verbs. Seen in: SSC CGL, Bank PO
Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Q1. Each of the boys (a) / were ready to participate (b) / in the national championship. (c) / No error (d) [SSC Style] [Difficulty: Easy] a) Each of the boys b) were ready to participate c) in the national championship. d) No error
✅ Correct: b) were ready to participate
Explanation (English): The sentence begins with the indefinite pronoun each, which functions as a singular subject. Even though the plural noun boys follows the preposition of, the governing verb must remain singular. Therefore, were must be replaced with was to maintain subject–verb agreement.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इस वाक्य की शुरुआत Each से हो रही है, जिसका मतलब होता है 'हर एक'। भले ही आगे boys लिखा है, लेकिन बात हर एक लड़के की अलग–अलग हो रही है। इसलिए यहाँ बहुवचन क्रिया were की जगह एकवचन क्रिया was का प्रयोग होगा. Rule tested: Subject–Verb Agreement with Indefinite Pronouns
Q2. If the logistics manager will dispatch the consignment (a) / on time, the client (b) / will receive it tomorrow. (c) / No error (d) [Banking Style] [Difficulty: Moderate] a) If the logistics manager will dispatch the consignment b) on time, the client c) will receive it tomorrow. d) No error
✅ Correct: a) If the logistics manager will dispatch the consignment
Explanation (English): This sentence expresses a conditional relation where both actions are projected in the future. In English grammar, the subordinate conditional clause introduced by if must be written in the Simple Present tense. Replacing will dispatch with dispatches restores structural validity. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): जब भविष्य की दो बातों को if (अगर) से जोड़ा जाता है, तो if वाले हिस्से में कभी भी will या shall नहीं लगाया जाता। वहां हम साधारण वर्तमान काल (Simple Present) का प्रयोग करते हैं, इसलिए will dispatch की जगह dispatches आएगा. Rule tested: First Conditional Clause Construction
Q3. We discussed about the matter (a) / thoroughly before taking (b) / any final decision. (c) / No error (d) [UPSC/CAT Style] [Difficulty: Moderate] a) We discussed about the matter b) thoroughly before taking c) any final decision. d) No error
✅ Correct: a) We discussed about the matter
Explanation (English): The verb discuss is a transitive verb that directly takes an object without requiring a preposition. Adding about after discuss is a redundant prepositional error. Removing about yields the correct sentence.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): अंग्रेजी में discuss शब्द का अपना मतलब ही 'किसी चीज़ के बारे में बात करना' होता है। इसलिए discuss के तुरंत बाद about लगाना गलत माना जाता है। सही वाक्य सिर्फ discussed the matter होगा. Rule tested: Redundant Prepositions after Transitive Verbs
Q4. No sooner had he arrived (a) / at the station when (b) / the train departed. (c) / No error (d) [Defence/Railways Style] [Difficulty: Moderate] a) No sooner had he arrived b) at the station when c) the train departed. d) No error
✅ Correct: b) at the station when
Explanation (English): The correlative expression no sooner requires the conjunction than to connect its corresponding clause. Using when with no sooner breaks conjunction parallelism. Replace when with than to make the sentence correct.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): जब भी वाक्य की शुरुआत No sooner से होती है, तो आगे चलकर उसके जोड़ीदार के रूप में हमेशा than का प्रयोग किया जाता है। यहाँ when का प्रयोग कर गलती की गई है, जिसे बदलकर than करना होगा. Rule tested: Correlative Conjunction Pairings
Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make
ERROR TYPE: Pluralizing Uncountable Nouns
❌ Wrong: The sceneries of the valley enchanted the tourists.
✅ Correct: The scenery of the valley enchanted the tourists.
Why: Uncountable nouns represent a whole class or mass and cannot take plural forms like sceneries. They always remain singular in form and take singular verbs.
💬 Hindi: हिंदी भाषी छात्र अक्सर 'नज़ारे' या 'दृश्य' का बहुवचन बनाने के चक्कर में अंग्रेजी में sceneries लिख देते हैं। अंग्रेजी व्याकरण में scenery एक Uncountable Noun है, इसलिए इसमें -ies लगाना बिल्कुल गलत है.
Seen in: SSC CGL, NDA, CDS
ERROR TYPE: Using Preposition 'At' vs 'In' for Skill Proficiency
❌ Wrong: He is very good in English grammar.
✅ Correct: He is very good at English grammar.
Why: The adjective good requires the preposition at when expressing skill or capability in a subject or activity. Using in is an incorrect idiom transfer.
💬 Hindi: हिंदी में हम कहते हैं "वह अंग्रेजी में अच्छा है", इसलिए छात्र 'में' का अनुवाद सीधे in कर देते हैं। लेकिन अंग्रेजी में किसी विषय या काम में कुशलता दर्शाने के लिए good at लिखा जाता है.
Seen in: IBPS Clerk, RRB, SSC CHSL
ERROR TYPE: Using Base Verb with Past Auxiliary 'Did'
❌ Wrong: He did not went to the coaching institute yesterday.
✅ Correct: He did not go to the coaching institute yesterday.
Why: The auxiliary verb did already carries the past tense marker. Combining did with a second past tense verb form (went) creates double past tense.
💬 Hindi: 'कल नहीं गया था' सोचकर छात्र did के साथ went भी लगा देते हैं। याद रखें कि did खुद भूतकाल (Past Tense) को दिखा देता है, इसलिए इसके बाद हमेशा क्रिया का पहला रूप (Base Form - go) ही आता है.
Seen in: SSC MTS, Insurance Exams, Railways
ERROR TYPE: Misusing Fewer vs. Less
❌ Wrong: Less students attended the special lecture today.
✅ Correct: Fewer students attended the special lecture today.
Why: Fewer is used for countable nouns (items that can be counted individually), whereas less is reserved for uncountable quantities.
💬 Hindi: छात्र 'कम' शब्द के लिए बिना सोचे–समझे less का प्रयोग कर देते हैं। चूँकि छात्रों (students) को गिना जा सकता है, इसलिए यहाँ less की जगह fewer का प्रयोग होना चाहिए.
Seen in: Banking PO, UPSC CSAT
ERROR TYPE: Incorrect Comparative Adjective Usage
❌ Wrong: She is more taller than her sister.
✅ Correct: She is taller than her sister.
Why: Combining more with an adjective that already has a comparative suffix (-er) creates a double comparative error.
💬 Hindi: तुलना करने के भाव में छात्र ज़ोर देने के लिए more और taller दोनों एक साथ लगा देते हैं। अंग्रेजी में दो तुलनात्मक शब्दों का एक साथ प्रयोग करना गलत नियम है.
Seen in: SSC CGL, State PSC
Section 6 – Previous Year Questions – Test Yourself
1. Scarcely had I reached the station (a) / than the train (b) / left the platform. (c) / No error (d) [SSC CGL] a) Scarcely had I reached the station b) than the train c) left the platform d) No error
Answer: b) than the train
Explanation (English): Adverbial expressions like scarcely and hardly take when as their corresponding conjunction, not than. Replacing than with when makes the sentence grammatically accurate.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): Scarcely या Hardly से शुरू होने वाले वाक्यों में जोड़ा when के साथ बनता है, than के साथ नहीं। यहाँ than को हटाकर when लगाने पर वाक्य सही हो जाएगा.
2. Everyone should do (a) / their work (b) / sincerely and honestly. (c) / No error (d) [SBI PO] a) Everyone should do b) their work c) sincerely and honestly d) No error
Answer: b) their work
Explanation (English): Indefinite pronouns like everyone take singular possessive pronouns (his or her) in standard formal test environments. Replace their with his or her (or his as standard masculine default in older exam patterns).
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): Everyone शब्द व्याकरण में एकवचन (Singular) माना जाता है। इसके साथ बहुवचन सर्वनाम their की जगह his or her का प्रयोग किया जाना चाहिए.
3. The police has arrived (a) / at the crime scene (b) / to investigate the case. (c) / No error (d) [CDS] a) The police has arrived b) at the crime scene c) to investigate the case d) No error
Answer: a) The police has arrived
Explanation (English): The noun police is a collective group noun that is treated as inherently plural in English grammar. It requires a plural auxiliary verb (have instead of has).
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): Police शब्द को देखने में भले एकवचन लगे, लेकिन अंग्रेजी नियम के अनुसार यह हमेशा बहुवचन (Plural) माना जाता है। इसलिए इसके साथ has नहीं, have का प्रयोग होगा.
4. Walking down the road, (a) / a snake bit (b) / the young traveler. (c) / No error (d) [IBPS PO] a) Walking down the road b) a snake bit c) the young traveler d) No error
Answer: a) Walking down the road
Explanation (English): This sentence contains a dangling modifier error. As structured, it implies that the snake was walking down the road. It should be rewritten to clarify that the traveler was walking.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इस वाक्य का गलत मतलब निकल रहा है कि 'साँप सड़क पर टहल रहा था'। सड़क पर टहलने वाला यात्री था, इसलिए Modifier का स्थान सही होना चाहिए.
5. She runs quick (a) / enough to win (b) / the inter-school race. (c) / No error (d) [RRB NTPC] a) She runs quick b) enough to win c) the inter-school race d) No error
Answer: a) She runs quick
Explanation (English): The word quick is an adjective, but here it modifies the action verb runs. Modifying a verb requires the adverb form quickly.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ दौड़ने (Verb) की विशेषता बताई जा रही है। क्रिया की विशेषता बताने के लिए Adjective (quick) नहीं, बल्कि Adverb (quickly) का प्रयोग होता है.
