Section 1 – What are Tense & Voice Errors and Why Should You Care?

You are reading an error-spotting sentence during a high-pressure exam: "The committee has submitted its report yesterday evening." It sounds perfectly clear and natural, so you mark No Error and move on. But when the answer key is released, you discover you lost 0.25 marks! Why? Because specific past-time adverbs like yesterday strictly require the Simple Past tense (submitted), never the Present Perfect tense (has submitted).

Tense rules dictate the precise time frame of an action, while Voice rules govern whether the subject performs the action (Active) or receives it (Passive). Examiners design these questions specifically to exploit Indian students' tendency to translate sentences directly from their mother tongue, where time markers and passive structures behave differently.

    💬 "Tense और Voice का नियम बिल्कुल ट्रेन के टाइम-टेबल और ड्राइवर की तरह है! अगर ट्रेन कल छूट चुकी है (Past Time Adverb), तो आप आज का टिकट (Present Perfect) लेकर नहीं चढ़ सकते। और अगर ट्रेन की धुलाई हो रही है (Passive Action), तो ट्रेन खुद को नहीं धो सकती – उसे धोया जा रहा है!"

Tense and Voice error-spotting questions appear regularly across competitive exams, accounting for 4 to 7 crucial marks in SSC CGL/CHSL, IBPS/SBI PO, UPSC CSAT, Defence, and State PSC tests.

Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown

Here is everything you need to know about Tense and Voice errors. We have broken them down into specific structural rules so you can spot the examiner's tricks instantly.

Sub-Topic 2.1: Past Time Adverbs vs. Present Perfect Tense

    A) Definition: When a sentence contains a specific past-time adverb or phrase (such as yesterday, ago, last week, in 1947, formerly), the sentence must strictly use the Simple Past Tense (V2), never the Present Perfect Tense (has/have + V3).

    💬 "जब भी वाक्य में भूतकाल का समय बताने वाले शब्द जैसे yesterday, ago, last year, या कोई बीता हुआ साल (in 2010) दिखे, तो has/have को तुरंत काट दें और केवल क्रिया का दूसरा रूप (V2) इस्तेमाल करें।"

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) PDF

    1. Scan the sentence for past-time adverbs (yesterday, ago, last night, in [past year]).

    1. वाक्य में बीते समय के शब्द (yesterday, ago, last night, बीता हुआ वर्ष) पहचानें।

    2. Check the verb form attached to this time marker.

    2. समय दर्शाने वाले इस शब्द के साथ लगी क्रिया (Verb) का Tense जांचें।

    3. Ensure the verb uses Simple Past (V2) and remove any has/have.

    3. अगर वहाँ has/have लगा है तो उसे हटाकर केवल Simple Past (V2) लगाएँ।

    Past Time Marker

He has returned from London yesterday.

    He returned from London yesterday.

    Time Ago

I have completed the degree two years ago.

I completed the degree two years ago.

    Specific Past Year

India has gained independence in 1947.

    India gained independence in 1947.

    Unspecified vs. Specified

She has left the room ten minutes back.

She left the room ten minutes back.

    • The #1 Exam Rule: Specific past-time adverbs (yesterday, ago, last week) strictly demand Simple Past Tense (V2), never Present Perfect.

Sub-Topic 2.2: Sequence of Tenses & Past Perfect Alignment

    A) Definition: When two actions happened in the past, one after the other:

    1. The earlier past action takes the Past Perfect Tense (had + V3).

    2. The subsequent past action takes the Simple Past Tense (V2). Also, if the main clause is in the past tense, subordinate clauses must generally remain in past tenses (unless stating a universal truth).

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) PDF

    1. Identify two distinct past events linked by before, after, when, or by the time.

    1. Before, after, when से जुड़ी भूतकाल की दो घटनाओं को पहचानें।

    2. Determine which action occurred first chronologically.

    2. तय करें कि कौन सा काम समय में पहले (Earlier Action) पूरा हुआ था।

    3. Apply had + V3 to the first action and V2 to the second action.

    3. पहले हुए काम में had + V3 और बाद में हुए काम में V2 लगाएँ।

The teacher said that the sun rises in the east.

    Future in Past

She said she will join us tomorrow.

She said she would join us tomorrow.

    • The #1 Exam Rule: For two completed past actions, the earlier action takes had + V3 and the later action takes Simple Past (V2).

Sub-Topic 2.3: Active vs. Passive Voice Mismatch

    A) Definition: When the subject of a sentence is the receiver of the action (inanimate objects or passive entities), the verb must be in the Passive Voice (be verb + V3). Using active verb structures for passive subjects results in logical error-spotting traps.

    How to Identify (English) PDF

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) PDF

    1. Look at the grammatical subject: is it capable of performing the action?

    1. वाक्य के Subject को देखें: क्या वह खुद काम कर सकता है या उस पर काम हो रहा है?

    2. If the subject receives the action, inspect for a passive structure (be + V3).

    2. अगर Subject पर काम हो रहा है, तो Passive Structure (be + V3) की जाँच करें।

    3. Convert active verb structures to passive forms where required.

    3. अगर क्रिया Active में लिखी है तो उसे Passive (is/was/been + V3) में बदलें।

The assignment had been completed before deadline.

    • The #1 Exam Rule: Non-agent subjects receiving an action strictly require Passive Voice construction (be auxiliary + V3).

Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)

    EXAM TRAP 01

    • What students think: Using since or for with Simple Present or Simple Past tenses is correct.

    • Correct answer: Time expressions starting with since or for to denote an ongoing or recently completed state strictly require Perfect or Perfect Continuous tenses (has/have been working).

    • Rule: Use Perfect / Perfect Continuous tenses with duration markers (since/for).

    • Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS PO

    EXAM TRAP 02

    • What students think: Stative verbs like know, understand, believe, contain, or belong can be used in the continuous (-ing) tense.

    • Correct answer: Stative verbs representing mental states or possession do not take continuous forms (I am knowing him $\rightarrow$ I know him).

    • Rule: Stative verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses.

    • Seen in: SBI PO, SSC CHSL

    EXAM TRAP 03

    • What students think: Using had twice together (had had) in a sentence is grammatically incorrect.

    • Correct answer: Had had is perfectly correct in Past Perfect when the first had is the auxiliary verb and the second had is the main verb V3 of have.

    • Rule: Auxiliary had + main verb had is valid for past perfect states.

    • Seen in: CDS, NDA

    EXAM TRAP 04

    • What students think: Conditional clause structures like If I had known... can be completed with will have or would.

    • Correct answer: Third conditional requires If + Past Perfect in the condition and would have + V3 in the main clause.

    • Rule: Match conditional structures: If + had + V3 pairs with would have + V3.

    • Seen in: UPSC CSAT, Bank PO

    EXAM TRAP 05

    • What students think: Verbs like resemble, marry, or discuss require passive preposition additions in standard active voice.

    • Correct answer: Transitive active verbs take direct objects without adding unnecessary prepositions or extra passive auxiliaries.

    • Rule: Do not confuse active transitive verb direct objects with passive verb constructions.

    • Seen in: SSC MTS, RRB NTPC

    EXAM TRAP 06

    • What students think: Habitual past actions can be written in Present Tense if they still happen occasionally.

    • Correct answer: Time clauses anchored in the past require past habitual markers like used to or Simple Past tense.

    • Rule: Past time anchors force all dependent action descriptions into past tense forms.

    • Seen in: IBPS Clerk, State PSC

Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Q1. The investigation team (a) / has arrived at the site (b) / three days ago to collect evidence. (c) / No error (d) [SSC Style] [Difficulty: Easy] a) The investigation team b) has arrived at the site c) three days ago to collect evidence. d) No error

Correct: b) has arrived at the site

Explanation (English): The sentence contains the past-time adverbial phrase three days ago. Specific past-time markers cannot be paired with the Present Perfect Tense (has arrived). Replacing has arrived with Simple Past arrived corrects the error. समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): वाक्य में three days ago (तीन दिन पहले) लिखा है जो बीते समय को दर्शाता है। बीते समय के साथ कभी भी has/have नहीं लगाया जाता। इसलिए has arrived की जगह केवल arrived आएगा। Rule tested: Past Time Adverbs with Simple Past Tense

Q2. By the time the fire brigade reached (a) / the commercial complex, the fire (b) / destroyed a major portion of the building. (c) / No error (d) [Banking Style] [Difficulty: Moderate] a) By the time the fire brigade reached b) the commercial complex, the fire c) destroyed a major portion of the building. d) No error

Correct: c) destroyed a major portion of the building.

Explanation (English): This sentence describes two past actions. Destruction of the building occurred before the arrival of the fire brigade. The earlier action must take the Past Perfect Tense (had destroyed instead of destroyed). समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ भूतकाल में दो काम हुए हैं- आग का लगना और फायर ब्रिगेड का पहुँचना। आग लगने का काम पहले हुआ था, इसलिए पहले हुए काम में had destroyed का प्रयोग होगा। Rule tested: Sequence of Past Actions / Past Perfect

Q3. I am knowing him (a) / for more than ten years, (b) / but I cannot trust him completely. (c) / No error (d) [UPSC/CAT Style] [Difficulty: Hard] a) I am knowing him b) for more than ten years, c) but I cannot trust him completely. d) No error

Correct: a) I am knowing him

Explanation (English): The verb know is a stative verb that cannot be used in continuous tenses. Furthermore, the presence of for more than ten years requires the Present Perfect Tense. Replace I am knowing him with I have known him. समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): Know (जानना) एक ऐसी क्रिया है जिसमें -ing नहीं लगाया जाता। इसके अलावा for ten years भी लगा है, जिसका मतलब है कि सही रूप have known him होगा। Rule tested: Stative Verbs and Perfect Tense Duration

Q4. The new hospital building (a) / inaugurated by the Chief Minister (b) / last Sunday amidst high security. (c) / No error (d) [Defence/Railways Style] [Difficulty: Moderate] a) The new hospital building b) inaugurated by the Chief Minister c) last Sunday amidst high security. d) No error

Correct: b) inaugurated by the Chief Minister

Explanation (English): The subject The new hospital building is inanimate and cannot inaugurate itself. It receives the action, requiring a Passive Voice construction in the Simple Past tense (was inaugurated). समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): अस्पताल की इमारत खुद का उद्घाटन नहीं कर सकती, उसका उद्घाटन मुख्यमंत्री द्वारा किया गया। जब काम किसी और द्वारा किया जाए, तो Passive Voice (was inaugurated) का इस्तेमाल होता है। Rule tested: Passive Voice for Inanimate Subjects

Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make

ERROR TYPE: Present Perfect with Specific Past Time

    • Wrong: I have received your letter yesterday.

    • Correct: I received your letter yesterday.

    • Why: Specific past time markers (yesterday) are incompatible with Present Perfect Tense because Present Perfect connects to the present moment.

    • 💬 Hindi: हिंदी में हम कहते हैं "मुझे कल आपका पत्र मिला है", इसलिए छात्र अंग्रेजी में भी have received लगा देते हैं। अंग्रेजी नियम के अनुसार yesterday आते ही have हट जाएगा।

    • Seen in: SSC CGL, NDA, IBPS Clerk

ERROR TYPE: Misusing Continuous Tense with Stative Verbs

    • Wrong: This box is containing six delicious mangoes.

    • Correct: This box contains six delicious mangoes.

    • Why: Verbs showing state, possession, or inclusion (contain, belong, own) are stative verbs and do not take continuous forms.

    • 💬 Hindi: छात्र सोचते हैं कि 'डिब्बे में आम रखे हुए हैं' इसलिए is containing सही है। लेकिन अंग्रेजी में contain के साथ कभी -ing नहीं लगाया जाता।

    • Seen in: SBI PO, SSC CHSL, CDS

ERROR TYPE: Present Tense with Duration Prepositions

    • Wrong: He is living in Mumbai since 2015.

    • Correct: He has been living in Mumbai since 2015.

    • Why: Actions that started in the past and continue into the present with since or for require Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

    • 💬 Hindi: हिंदी में कहते हैं "वह 2015 से मुंबई में रह रहा है"। अंग्रेजी में 'रह रहा है' का अनुवाद is living करने की गलती न करें; समय (since) दिए होने पर has been living ही सही है।

    • Seen in: Banking PO, UPSC CSAT, State PSC

ERROR TYPE: Active Voice on Inanimate Subject

    • Wrong: The results will publish next week on the website.

    • Correct: The results will be published next week on the website.

    • Why: Results cannot publish themselves; they are published by an authority. Active voice creates a logical error.

    • 💬 Hindi: परिणाम खुद को प्रकाशित नहीं कर सकते। इसलिए Active Voice (will publish) की जगह Passive Voice (will be published) का प्रयोग किया जाना चाहिए।

    • Seen in: RRB NTPC, SSC MTS

ERROR TYPE: Double Past Tense in Subordinate Conditional

    • Wrong: If you had invited me, I would come to the party.

    • Correct: If you had invited me, I would have come to the party.

    • Why: Unfulfilled past conditions (If + had + V3) require would have + V3 in the main result clause to complete third conditional alignment.

    • 💬 Hindi: अगर शर्त वाले वाक्य में had + V3 आया है, तो परिणाम वाले हिस्से में सिर्फ would नहीं बल्कि would have + V3 लगाना अनिवार्य है।

    • Seen in: Insurance Exams, SSC CGL

Section 6 – Previous Year Questions – Test Yourself

    1. I have seen (a) / that movie (b) / last night with my friends. (c) / No error (d) [SSC CGL] a) I have seen b) that movie c) last night with my friends d) No error

    • Answer: a) I have seen

    • Explanation (English): The past-time adverb last night requires Simple Past Tense. Change have seen to saw.

    • समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): वाक्य में last night (पिछली रात) लिखा है। इसलिए Present Perfect (have seen) गलत है, केवल Simple Past (saw) आएगा।

    2. The train had left (a) / the station before (b) / I have reached there. (c) / No error (d) [IBPS PO] a) The train had left b) the station before c) I have reached there d) No error

    • Answer: c) I have reached there

    • Explanation (English): In a past sequence with before, the subsequent past action must take Simple Past Tense (reached instead of have reached).

    • समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): बाद में हुए काम के लिए Simple Past (V2) का प्रयोग होता है। इसलिए have reached से have हटाकर केवल reached लिखें।

    3. She is owning (a) / two luxury apartments (b) / in the heart of the city. (c) / No error (d) [UPSC CSAT] a) She is owning b) two luxury apartments c) in the heart of the city d) No error

    • Answer: a) She is owning

    • Explanation (English): The verb own represents possession and is stative. Change continuous is owning to simple present owns.

    • समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): Own (मालिकाना हक होना) एक Stative Verb है जिसमें -ing नहीं लगता। सही उत्तर owns होगा।

    4. The problem has discussed (a) / in detail during (b) / the board meeting yesterday. (c) / No error (d) [CDS] a) The problem has discussed b) in detail during c) the board meeting yesterday d) No error

    • Answer: a) The problem has discussed

    • Explanation (English): The inanimate subject The problem requires Passive Voice in the Simple Past tense due to yesterday (was discussed).

    • समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): समस्या खुद चर्चा नहीं कर सकती। Yesterday के कारण और Passive structure की वजह से यहाँ was discussed आएगा।

    5. He works in this factory (a) / for the past five years (b) / as a senior supervisor. (c) / No error (d) [RRB NTPC] a) He works in this factory b) for the past five years c) as a senior supervisor d) No error

    • Answer: a) He works in this factory

    • Explanation (English): Time duration indicated by for the past five years demands Present Perfect Continuous (has been working).

    • समझाएं (Hindi - Std 8 level): जब काम समय (for five years) से चलता आ रहा हो, तो Simple Present (works) की जगह has been working लगाते हैं।

    Section 8 – Exam-wise Quick Strategy

    • SSC (CGL / CHSL / MTS): Directly focus on past time adverbs (yesterday, ago), active-passive inversions, and third conditional formulas. Solve each question in under 12–15 seconds.

    • Banking (IBPS PO / SBI PO / Clerk): Look for duration phrases with since/for, stative verbs embedded in long continuous clauses, and past perfect sequence alignment. Target 20 seconds per question.

    • UPSC / CAT / CLAT: Analyze complex multi-clause sentences for subtle tense shifts between main and subordinate clauses, universal truth exceptions, and passive voice precision. Allocate up to 30 seconds per question.

    • Defence / Railways / State PSC: Watch for direct rule applications like before/after past perfect pairings, basic stative verb errors, and Simple Past vs. Present Perfect checks. Aim to clear these in 10 seconds flat.
