Section 1 – What are Foreign Words & Phrases and Why Should You Care?

You are reading a passage in a competitive exam, and suddenly a phrase like de facto or faux pas pops up. If you translate it literally, you will miss the entire context. This is the hidden trap examiners use when testing Foreign Words and Phrases – the specialized vocabulary that can make or break your English section score!

In plain English, foreign words and phrases are expressions borrowed directly from other languages (primarily Latin, French, German, Italian, and Spanish) into English without being fully anglicized. They retain their original spellings, meanings, and often unique pronunciations, allowing writers to express complex ideas succinctly in academic, legal, literary, and competitive exam contexts.

This topic is directly tested across major exams like UPSC, SSC CGL, and Banking PO – mastering these expressions gives you a distinct edge over other candidates.

Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown

Here is everything you need to know about foreign words and phrases. We have categorized them by their linguistic roots so you can easily identify them.

Sub-type 1: Latin Words & Maxims (Law, Logic, Academics)

Latin provides the foundational vocabulary for legal principles, academic writing, logic, and official procedures in English.

    💬 "लैटिन भाषा के शब्दों का प्रयोग सबसे ज्यादा कानून (Law), अदालतों और रिसर्च पेपर्स में होता है। जैसे Status quo (मौजूदा स्थिति) या De facto (वास्तविक रूप से)। 'Latin Maxims' कानून के बुनियादी सिद्धांतों को छोटे शब्दों में समझाते हैं."

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Look for Legal/Formal Contexts: Latin phrases usually appear in legal rulings, formal arguments, and academic papers.

    1. कानूनी या औपचारिक संदर्भ देखें: लैटिन शब्द ज्यादातर अदालती फैसलों और रिसर्च पेपर्स में मिलते हैं।

    2. Spot Standard Abbreviations: Phrases like e.g. (exempli gratia), i.e. (id est), and etc. (et cetera) are all Latin.

    2. संक्षिप्त नाम (Abbreviations) पहचानें: e.g., i.e., etc. जैसे शब्द लैटिन से ही आए हैं।

    3. Check for Root Structure: Latin terms often retain endings like -um, -us, -a, -is (referendum, syllabus).

    3. शब्द के अंत पर ध्यान दें: लैटिन शब्दों के अंत में अक्सर -um, -us, -a आता है (जैसे facto, modus)।

Sub-type 2: French Words & Phrases (Diplomacy, Social Etiquette, Culture)

French loanwords dominate English vocabulary related to social graces, dining, arts, diplomacy, and high fashion.

    3. Notice Unique Accents: Characters like é, è, ç (déjà vu, vis-à-vis) denote French origin.

Status quo is a Latin term that refers to keeping things as they currently are. समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): वाक्य में 'मौजूदा स्थिति' को बनाए रखने की बात हो रही है। लैटिन फ्रेज status quo का मतलब ही 'यथास्थिति' (जैसी स्थिति है वैसी बनाए रखना) होता है। Rule tested: Latin Phrase Meaning & Context (Section 2.1)

In options a and c, deceptive or criminal acts contradict "good faith". समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): Bona fide का मतलब होता है सच्चा, असली या प्रामाणिक। राज्य के 'सच्चे/प्रामाणिक' निवासियों के लिए इस शब्द का प्रयोग बिल्कुल सही है। Rule tested: Contextual Application of Latin Legal Terms (Section 2.1)
