Open Schooling is described as the learning which is ‘open’ in terms of timing, location, teaching roles, instructional methods, modes of access and many other factors related to learning processes.
PURPOSE OF OPEN SCHOOLING
The purpose of Open Schooling is to provide relevant, continuing and holistic education up to pre degree level through open and distance learning systems.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR AND OPEN SCHOOL
The difference between regular and open schooling are:
Open schooling boards such as NIOS, BOSSE and others allow the student to study from home or while working, whereas regular schools require students to attend classes everyday.
Regular school is structured around teacher and student interaction and to strict time tables, whereas open schools allow the students to self-study and assess their progress under their timetable.
ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of OPEN SCHOOLING
The advantages of open schooling are:
They give exams to students when they are ready.
They do not need students to attend classes.
They also give students a time frame which allows them to complete a one year program in 4-5 years.
The disadvantages are:
The lack of teacher support which means, if the student is learning from home, the quality of education will be compromised. This will happen because teachers will not be there to help the students.
The self study of the students will decrease the speed of study and will be less than classroom learning.
MY OPINION ABOUT OPEN SCHOOLING
I think that open schooling is a better form of schooling because it prepares us for the actual challenges which we are going to face in future. However, we need to ensure that a dedicated person supervises the progress of the student undergoing open schooling.
