Section 1 – What is Continuous Tense and Why Should You Care?
Picture this: You are sitting in the exam hall, the clock is ticking, and you come across an Error Spotting question. It reads: "This massive manufacturing plant is currently belonging to an international commercial industrial conglomerate."
It sounds absolutely fine to your ears, doesn't it? After all, in our daily Indian conversations, we translate thoughts literally from our mother tongue. We think: "यह प्लांट इस कंपनी से सम्बन्ध रख रहा है," so we write "is belonging to." But in the strict world of competitive English, this is a fatal trap that will instantly cost you negative marks.
In plain English, Continuous Tenses (often called Progressive Tenses) are structural grammatical time–markers. Their only job is to define an action as being actively in progress at a specific, designated point on the timeline. They show us ongoing, incomplete operations. We build them by pairing a variant of the auxiliary verb to be (like is, am, are, was, were, will be) directly with the present participle form of the main verb (Verb + ing).
💬 Hindi Box: Continuous Tenses (Progressive Tenses) इंग्लिश ग्रामर के वे समय–सूचक हैं जो यह दिखाते हैं कि कोई काम समय के किसी निश्चित बिंदु पर 'लगातार चल रहा है या जारी है'। ये काम की निरंतरता (Ongoing action) को दर्शाते हैं। इसके लिए हम Helping Verbs (is, am, are, was, were, will be) के साथ क्रिया के अंत में -ing लगाते हैं। कॉम्पिटिटिव एग्जाम्स में सबसे ज्यादा सवाल इसके स्टेटिव वर्ब्स (Stative Verbs) के अपवाद से आते हैं, जहाँ कुछ क्रियाओं में जबरदस्ती '-ing' लगाना पूरी तरह वर्जित होता है।
The Money Metric: This single topic is worth anywhere between 2 to 5 marks across major national exams like SSC CGL, SBI PO, CDS, and UPSC CSAT. Mastering these simple rules can easily be the difference between making the cutoff or waiting for another year!
Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown
Let's pull back the curtain and break down the three structural pillars of Continuous Tenses. Master these formulas, understand how to identify them, and watch your accuracy soar.
Sub–Topic 2.1: The Present Continuous Tense & The Stative Verb Block
The Present Continuous Tense identifies an action that is actively in progress at the current moment of speaking.
The core formula is:
Subject + is / am / are + V1 + ing + Object
💬 Hindi Box: Present Continuous Tense दिखाता है कि कोई काम 'बोलते समय' लगातार जारी है (जैसे: वह लिख रहा है). इसके लिए हम is/am/are के साथ V4 (Verb+ing) लगाते हैं.
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Look for current time–markers like now, at present, at this moment, currently. | 1. वाक्य में वर्तमान समय का लाइव इशारा करने वाले शब्दों जैसे now, at present, currently को खोजें। |
2. Check if the main verb belongs to the prohibited stative categories (perception, thinking, emotion). | 2. जांचें कि क्या मुख्य क्रिया वर्जित Stative Verbs (जैसे see, hear, notice, know, understand) की लिस्ट से है। |
3. If a stative verb carries an -ing suffix to show a state, flag it immediately as a structural error. | 3. यदि कोई stative verb वाक्य में स्थिति दिखाने के लिए जबरदस्ती '-ing' पहनकर बैठा है, तो उसे तुरंत एरर मार्क करें। |
4. Verify that the auxiliary matches the exact singular or plural status of the true subject. | 4. सुनिश्चित करें कि is, am, are का चयन वाक्य के असली कर्ता (Subject) के एकवचन या बहुवचन होने के अनुसार ही हुआ है। |
Quick Examples Table
Clause Category / Context | Formula Applied | Example Sentence Construction | Grammatical Operational Insight |
Valid Dynamic Present | Sub (Plural) + are + V1+ing | The logistics operators are unloading the sensitive consignment now. | Now requires the continuous layout; unload is actively dynamic. |
Stative Possession Error | Omit Continuous Layout | The corporate firm owns three individual automated assembly units. | CORRECT: Rejects is owning; possession cannot take -ing. |
Stative Cognition Error | Omit Continuous Layout | The senior research analyst understands the structural loophole. | CORRECT: Rejects is understanding; mental state stays simple present. |
Negative Continuous Layout | Sub + is not + V1+ing | The branch manager is not approving any funds at this moment. | At this moment locks the continuous auxiliary structure is not approving. |
Dual Nature (Dynamic) | Sensory Active Action | The apprentice chef is tasting the continental soup cautiously. | Valid: The chef is physically performing the dynamic act of tasting. |
Dual Nature (Stative) | Sensory Static State | The continental soup tastes remarkably fresh and delicious. | Valid: The soup passively holds a quality; requires an adjective. |
The #1 Exam Rule
The Stative Verb Absolute Ban: Verbs expressing mental states, emotions, senses, or possession must never be used in any continuous tense to show a state (e.g., know, understand, own, belong to). Writing "I am knowing him" is a fatal exam error; always write "I know him."
BhashaLab Tip: Examiners love to use is consisting of or are comprising of in error–spotting items because "से मिलकर बन रहा है" sounds completely natural in Hindi. Remember, comprise and consist are strictly stative verbs of composition—they completely reject the continuous -ing framework!
Sub–Topic 2.2: The Past Continuous Tense & Parallel Timeline Intersections
The Past Continuous Tense defines an action that was actively in progress at a specific, continuous point in historical time.
The core formula is:
Subject + was / were + V1 + ing + Object
💬 Hindi Box: Past Continuous Tense (भूतकाल निरंतर) दिखाता है कि कोई काम बीते हुए समय में लगातार चल रहा था (जैसे: वह पढ़ रहा था). इसके लिए हम was/were के साथ V4 लगाते हैं. परीक्षा में इसके सबसे बेहतरीन सवाल तब बनते हैं जब दो काम भूतकाल में एक साथ हो रहे हों—वहाँ While और When के कंजंक्शन रूल्स काम आते हैं.
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Scan the text boundaries for specific past continuous markers like then, at that time, at that moment. | 1. वाक्य में भूतकाल के निरंतर समय का इशारा करने वाले शब्दों जैसे then, at that time, at that moment को खोजें। |
2. Look for the conjunction While connecting two long actions running parallel in past time. | 2. वाक्य में While कंजंक्शन को देखें जो भूतकाल में दो लंबे कामों को एक साथ समानांतर चलते दिखाता है। |
3. Spot the conjunction When introducing a sudden short action (V2) that interrupts a long ongoing action (V4). | 3. वाक्य में When को खोजें जो किसी लंबे चल रहे काम के बीच में अचानक हुए छोटे काम (V2) को जोड़ता है। |
4. Ensure past stative assertions completely avoid the was/were + -ing layout. | 4. जांचें कि भूतकाल में भी मानसिक या संवेदी स्थितियों (Stative Verbs) के साथ was/were + -ing न लगा हो। |
Quick Examples Table
Clause Interaction / Context | Formula Applied | Example Sentence Construction | Grammatical Operational Insight |
Specific Past Progress | Sub + was/were + V1+ing | The accounting team was verifying the system logs at that moment. | At that moment forces the clause into past continuous layout. |
Two Parallel Actions (While) | Past Cont + while + Past Cont | While the director was speaking, the secretary was taking notes. | Both long actions were running simultaneously; both require -ing. |
Sudden Interruption (When) | Past Cont + when + Simple Past | The field engineers were testing the generator when the power failed. | Long ongoing action (testing) interrupted by short sharp event (failed). |
Past Stative Omission | Sub + V2 (Simple Past) | The old supervisor knew the corporate strategy perfectly inside out. | Rejects was knowing; know must stay simple past even in history. |
Negative Past Continuous | Sub + were not + V1+ing | The operators were not monitoring the load gauges during the shift. | Standard plural negation framing ongoing past negligence. |
The #1 Exam Rule
The When/While Distinction Rule: Use the Past Continuous Tense for long background actions (was playing) and the Simple Past Tense (V2) for sudden, interrupting events introduced by when (snapped), or use Past Continuous on both sides of while to show parallel ongoing events.
Sub–Topic 2.3: The Future Continuous Tense & Projected Timelines
The Future Continuous Tense represents an action that will be actively in progress at a specific, designated point in future time.
The core formula is:
Subject + will be / shall be + V1 + ing + Object
💬 Hindi Box: Future Continuous Tense यह दिखाता है कि आने वाले समय (Future Time) में किसी निश्चित बिंदु पर कोई काम 'लगातार चल रहा होगा' या 'किया जा रहा होगा' (जैसे: कल इस समय मैं परीक्षा दे रहा हूँगा). इसके लिए हम will be या shall be के साथ V4 लगाते हैं. इसमें कॉम्पिटिटिव एग्जाम्स का सबसे खतरनाक जाल तब बनता है जब इसे किसी कंडीशनल क्लॉज़ (If Clause) के साथ जोड़ दिया जाता है.
How to Identify
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Scan the text margins for specific projected continuous markers like at this time tomorrow, next year then. | 1. वाक्य में भविष्य के किसी खास निरंतर समय का इशारा करने वाले शब्दों जैसे at this time tomorrow, next year then को देखें। |
2. Locate the precise modal sequence cluster will be or shall be paired with an -ing verb. | 2. वाक्य में क्रिया के समूह में स्पष्ट रूप से will be या shall be के साथ V4 का तालमेल देखें। |
3. Check for conditional intersections: identify if a future progressive action depends on an If clause. | 3. कंडीशनल जुड़ाव देखें: पहचानें कि क्या भविष्य का कोई जारी रहने वाला काम किसी शर्त वाले वाक्य पर निर्भर है। |
4. Enforce the Stative Ban: ensure no future progressive layout applies to words of cognition or possession. | 4. भविष्य में भी Stative Verbs पर कड़ी नज़र रखें—will be knowing या will be owning को तुरंत बाहर करें। |
Quick Examples Table
Clause Category / Context | Formula Applied | Example Sentence Construction | Grammatical Operational Insight |
Future Projected Progress | Sub + will be + V1+ing | The technical branch will be migrating the server data at this time tomorrow. | At this time tomorrow forces the clause into future continuous layout. |
First Person Future Intent | I/We + shall be + V1+ing | We shall be conducting the live systems check during the afternoon shift. | Traditional modal styling pairs we with the helper shall be. |
Conditional Intersection | Simple Present -> Fut Cont | If you enter the hall at noon, the director will be addressing the team. | The condition clause stays simple present; the main clause holds future continuous. |
Future Stative Prohibition | Omit Continuous Layout | By next calendar year, the corporate subsidiary will own the plant. | CORRECT: Rejects will be owning; absolute stative constraint. |
Negative Future Continuous | Sub + will not be + V1+ing | The field crew will not be operating the core drills during the monsoon. | Modals frame negation perfectly by placing not directly inside the split will not be. |
The #1 Exam Rule
The Conditional Clause Restriction: Never place the future continuous auxiliary (will be / shall be) inside a subordinate clause starting with conditional connectors like if, when, until, unless, as soon as. The condition must stay in the Simple Present, while the main result clause can use the Future Continuous.
Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)
Examiners know exactly where your brain defaults to literal translations. They set these exact trapdoors every single year. Let's disarm them.
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 01: The Naked Stative Continuous Inflection
What students think: Since the consultant is actively processing information right now, it is correct to write: "The senior consultant is understanding the intricate tax loophole perfectly."
Correct answer: "The senior consultant understands the intricate tax loophole perfectly."
Rule: Verbs of cognition, comprehension, and perception (like understand, know, remember, believe, recognize) represent mental states, not physical actions; they completely reject the continuous -ing inflection and must be written in the simple tense format.
Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS PO
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 02: The Continuous Possession Illusion
What students think: "The expanding logistics enterprise is owning five distinct metropolitan warehouse blocks."
Correct answer: "The expanding logistics enterprise owns five distinct metropolitan warehouse blocks."
Rule: The verb own (along with possess, belong to, contain, consist of) expresses a fixed state of possession; it cannot be written in a progressive layout (is owning) because possession has no active physical movement.
Seen in: SSC CHSL, NDA
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 03: The While Parallelism Tense Asymmetry
What students think: "While the technical team was updating the server logs, the manager compiled the report."
Correct answer: "While the technical team was updating the server logs, the manager was compiling the report."
Rule: The conjunction while establishes that two long, background activities were running perfectly parallel to each other at the same time; therefore, both clauses must be balanced in the past continuous tense.
Seen in: SBI PO, RRB NTPC
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 04: The When Interruption Tense Reversal
What students think: "The circuit board failed when the automated operator was testing the threshold current."
Correct answer: "The automated operator was testing the threshold current when the circuit board failed."
Rule: The long ongoing background action must take the Past Continuous Tense (was testing), while the sudden, short interrupting event introduced by the conjunction when must take the Simple Past Tense (V2 – failed). Do not reverse them.
Seen in: UPSC CSAT, IBPS PO
BhashaLab Tip: In error–spotting items, look closely at the action around when. Ask yourself: "Which action was already happening in the background?" That background action must get the was/were + -ing layout, while the sudden gatecrashing action gets the clean V2 form!
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 05: The Conditional Future Progressive Blend Error
What students think: "If the managing director will be addressing the shareholders tomorrow, the market will stabilize."
Correct answer: "If the managing director addresses the shareholders tomorrow, the market will stabilize." (Or: "If you enter, he will be addressing...")
Rule: Subordinate clauses opened by conditional or temporal connectors (if, when, unless, as soon as) completely ban any future helper variant, including will be + -ing. The condition block must stay in the simple present tense.
Seen in: SSC CGL, CDS
⚠️ EXAM TRAP 06: The Think Double–Meaning Deviation
What students think: Since think is a stative verb, writing "I am thinking of resigning from this operational post" is an absolute error.
Correct answer: "I am thinking of resigning from this operational post" is completely correct.
Rule: When think means holding an opinion, it is stative and rejects -ing (I think you are right). However, when think means the mental process of planning, deliberating, or weighing a decision, it becomes a dynamic action and can freely take a continuous form.

Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Let's look at some real exam–style questions from the notes so you can see exactly how these rules are applied under pressure.
Q1. This massive manufacturing plant (a) / is currently belonging to (b) / an international commercial industrial conglomerate (c) / No error (d) [SSC CGL Style] [Difficulty: Easy]
✅ Correct: (b)
Explanation (English): Part (b) contains a severe tense inflection error because it applies the Present Continuous layout is belonging to to a verb of possession. Belong to is strictly a stative verb, meaning it cannot take a progressive framework. The phrase must be corrected to the simple present form currently belongs to.
Rule tested: Section 2.1 – The Stative Verb Absolute Ban Law.
Q2. The circuit board failed unexpectedly (a) / while the technical crew (b) / tested the baseline threshold current (c) / No error (d) [SSC CHSL Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: (c)
Explanation (English): The sentence deploys the conjunction while in part (b), which establishes that a long, background action was actively in progress when the short interruption occurred. The simple past form tested in part (c) must be changed to the Past Continuous layout was testing.
Rule tested: Section 2.2 – Key Exam Rule 2 (The When / While Interruption Matrix).
Q3. The software operators (a) / are not monitoring the gauges (b) / at this present moment (c) / No error (d) [SSC MTS Style] [Difficulty: Easy]
✅ Correct: (d)
Explanation (English): This sentence contains absolutely no grammatical errors. The temporal trigger expression at this present moment in part (c) correctly mandates the Present Continuous tense layout. Since monitor is an active, dynamic verb, the plural negative continuous construction are not monitoring is completely valid.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यह वाक्य व्याकरण के नियमों के अनुसार पूरी तरह से शुद्ध है (No Error). वाक्य के अंत में at this present moment (इस समय) लिखा है, जो वर्तमान की निरंतरता दिखाता है। चूंकि 'मॉनिटर करना' एक एक्टिव फिजिकल काम है, इसलिए प्लुरल सब्जेक्ट के साथ are not monitoring लगाना एकदम सही है।
Rule tested: Section 2.1 – Temporal Trigger Law for Continuous Verbs.
Q4. The regulatory committee is fully convinced (a) / that the corporate subsidiary is containing (b) / several top-secret structural blueprint documents within its local files (c) / No error (d) [Banking PO Style] [Difficulty: Hard]
✅ Correct: (b)
Explanation (English): Part (b) introduces a structural stative error by using the progressive inflection is containing. The verb contain expresses a passive state of composition or containment, making it inherently stative. To satisfy formal syntax rules, it must be rewritten in its singular Simple Present form: the corporate subsidiary contains.
Rule tested: Section 2.1 – The Stative Verb Absolute Ban (Composition category).
BhashaLab Reality Check: Banking exams intentionally make sentences long and complicated so that your eyes focus only on checking Subject–Verb agreement while completely missing the stative nature of the verb. Do not fall into this trap! Keep your eyes on the verb's semantic nature.
Q5. While the senior managing director was addressing the shareholders, (a) / the corporate legal counsel was thoroughly reviewing (b) / the revised international trade clauses inside the cabin (c) / No error (d) [Banking Clerk Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: (d)
Explanation (English): This statement is grammatically flawless. The sentence utilizes the conjunction While to link two long, background activities that were running perfectly parallel to each other in historical time. Both clauses are beautifully balanced in the Past Continuous Tense (was addressing and was reviewing), satisfying the rule of parallel past progressive alignment.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इस वाक्य में कोई एरर नहीं है (No Error). यहाँ कंजंक्शन While लगा है और भूतकाल के दो लंबे काम (डायरेक्टर का भाषण देना और काउंसिल का फाइलें चेक करना) एक ही समय पर समानांतर चल रहे थे। जब दो काम पास्ट में एक साथ हो रहे हों, तो दोनों तरफ Past Continuous लगाना शत-प्रतिशत सही है।
Rule tested: Section 2.2 – Key Exam Rule 1 (The While Parallelism Mandate framework).
Q6. If you enter the laboratory facility (a) / at precisely noon tomorrow morning, (b) / the research technicians will be calibrating the advanced lasers (c) / No error (d) [UPSC CSAT Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: (d)
Explanation (English): The sentence is completely correct. It describes a projected future continuous activity (will be calibrating) that will be in progress at a specific future timeline point (at precisely noon tomorrow). The conditional subordinate clause opened by If in part (a) correctly avoids the future auxiliary and stays anchored in the Simple Present Tense (enter), ensuring flawless tense synchronization.
Rule tested: Section 2.3 – Future Continuous Timeline & Conditional Synchronization rules.
Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make
Due to the structural differences between Indian regional languages and English, certain errors are incredibly common among Indian aspirants. Let’s look at the most frequent errors and fix them permanently.
ERROR TYPE: Ungrammatical Continuous Inflection of Cognition Verbs
❌ Wrong: The field coordinator is knowing the full operational directory layout now.
✅ Correct: The field coordinator knows the full operational directory layout now.
Why: The verb know is an absolute stative verb of cognition. It represents an internal state of awareness rather than a physical action, meaning it can never be used in a continuous layout.
💬 Hindi: हिंदी में हम अक्सर बोलते हैं—"वह इस नियम को 'जान रहा है'।" इसी आदत के कारण छात्र इंग्लिश में is knowing लिख बैठते हैं। हमेशा याद रखें, दिमाग से होने वाले काम जैसे जानना (know), समझना (understand) या याद रखना (remember) कभी भी प्रोग्रेसिव फॉर्म में नहीं लिखे जाते।
Seen in: SSC CGL, MPSC
ERROR TYPE: The Continuous Possession Slip
❌ Wrong: At this moment, the senior supervisor is owning three personal computers.
✅ Correct: At this moment, the senior supervisor owns three personal computers.
Why: The verb own expresses a fixed state of possession, which does not change dynamically second–by–second. Therefore, it completely rejects the continuous template even when paired with the time–marker at this moment.
💬 Hindi: भारतीय छात्र "रहा है" का मतलब हमेशा -ing समझते हैं, जैसे "इस समय उसके पास तीन कंप्यूटर 'हो रहे हैं' या वह 'रख रहा है'।" मालिकाना हक जताने वाली क्रियाओं में कभी भी -ing का प्रयोग न करें।
Seen in: NDA, CDS
ERROR TYPE: Comprising / Consisting Progressive Redundancy
❌ Wrong: The technical core folder is consisting of ten confidential blueprint sheets.
✅ Correct: The technical core folder consists of ten confidential blueprint sheets.
Why: Verbs of composition like consist of and comprise express static structures. They do not involve any ongoing physical action, meaning they are strictly stative and cannot take a progressive marker.
💬 Hindi: "यह किताब दस अध्यायों से 'मिलकर बन रही है'।" इस हिंदी वाक्य का अनुवाद करते समय छात्र is consisting of लिख देते हैं। ध्यान दें, किसी चीज की बनावट बताने के लिए केवल consist of या comprise का ही प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Seen in: CAT, CUET
ERROR TYPE: Habitual Routines Masked as Continuous Progress
❌ Wrong: Nowadays the senior accounts supervisor is arriving late for the morning shift.
✅ Correct: Nowadays the senior accounts supervisor arrives late for the morning shift.
Why: Temporary or regular habits running across a current period (indicated by words like nowadays, these days) describe a routine habit rather than an ongoing action happening at the exact moment of speaking. They must stay in the Simple Present Tense.
💬 Hindi: हम जब कहते हैं "आजकल वह दफ्तर 'देर से आ रहा है'", तो हम उसकी एक आदत या रूटीन की बात कर रहे होते हैं। रूटीन वाली आदतों को व्यक्त करने के लिए हमेशा Simple Present का प्रयोग करें, न कि Continuous का।
Seen in: SSC CGL, Banking PO
ERROR TYPE: Future Stative Progressive Anomaly
❌ Wrong: By the end of this specialized training course, you will be knowing the full operational framework.
✅ Correct: By the end of this specialized training course, you will know the full operational framework.
Why: The stative verb ban does not disappear when we look at the future. Even in future projections, cognitive verbs like know cannot take the future continuous will be knowing layout; you must use the simple future will know.
💬 Hindi: "कोर्स के अंत तक तुम पूरा फ्रेमवर्क 'जान रहे होगे'।" यह सोचना व्याकरण के अनुसार गलत है। भविष्य की किसी भी स्थिति में mental actions के साथ will be knowing का प्रयोग एकदम वर्जित है, यहाँ केवल will know ही सही होगा।

Section 6 – Previous Year Questions – Test Yourself
These questions have actually appeared in competitive exams. Try each one before reading the answer to see how well you have retained these rules!
1. The old supervisor (a) / was knowing (b) / the corporate strategy perfectly inside out (c) / No error (d) [SSC CGL]
Answer: (b)
Explanation (English): The past stative verb know cannot take the progressive layout was knowing. It must be corrected to the Simple Past form knew to correctly maintain structural alignment.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ part (b) में एरर है। पास्ट टेंस में भी know (जानना) जैसी मानसिक क्रिया के साथ was knowing नहीं लगाया जा सकता। इसे हमेशा Simple Past यानी knew में बदला जाना चाहिए।
2. While the director was speaking, (a) / the secretary (b) / compiled the minutes of the meeting (c) / No error (d) [IBPS PO]
Answer: (c)
Explanation (English): The conjunction While in part (a) implies that both past activities were running parallel. Therefore, the simple past verb compiled must be replaced with the Past Continuous form was compiling.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (c) में त्रुटि है। चूँकि वाक्य की शुरुआत While से हो रही है, इसका अर्थ है कि दोनों कार्य एक साथ चल रहे थे। इसलिए compiled की जगह Past Continuous यानी was compiling होना चाहिए।
3. If the managing director (a) / will be addressing the shareholders tomorrow, (b) / the stock prices will definitely stabilize (c) / No error (d) [CDS]
Answer: (b)
Explanation (English): Subordinate conditional clauses starting with If cannot contain future progressive structures like will be addressing. The clause must be rewritten in the Simple Present: addresses.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ part (b) में बड़ी भूल है। If से शुरू होने वाले शर्त सूचक वाक्यों (Conditional Clauses) में कभी भी will be का प्रयोग नहीं होता। इस हिस्से को Simple Present में रखकर addresses लिखा जाना चाहिए।
4. By next calendar year, (a) / the corporate subsidiary (b) / will be owning the entire assembly plant (c) / No error (d) [XAT]
Answer: (c)
Explanation (English): The possession verb own cannot be used in a future continuous layout will be owning. It must be changed to the simple future form will own.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (c) में गलती है। मालिकाना हक (Possession) दिखाने वाले क्रिया शब्द own के साथ भविष्य काल में भी will be owning नहीं लगाया जा सकता। यहाँ सही रूप will own होगा।
5. Since think is a stative verb, (a) / writing "I am thinking of moving to Delhi" (b) / is an absolute grammatical violation (c) / No error (d) [UPSC CSAT]
Answer: (d)
Explanation (English): The sentence is completely correct. When think refers to a deliberate process of planning or weighing a decision (such as moving to a new city), it acts as a dynamic verb and can take the continuous form.
समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इस वाक्य में कोई एरर नहीं है (No Error). जब think का अर्थ किसी योजना पर 'विचार करना या प्लानिंग करना' होता है, तो वह एक एक्टिव काम बन जाता है। ऐसी स्थिति में I am thinking लिखना बिल्कुल सही है।

Section 8 – Exam–wise Quick Strategy
Every exam has a slightly different pattern and style of asking questions on this topic. Here is your quick roadmap to score 100% marks in each category:
SSC (CGL / CHSL / MTS):
Focus heavily on the Stative Verb Block exceptions (especially belong, own, and consist of) and parallel past actions with while/when. Look out for simple spelling errors in verb-ing inflections. You have roughly 20–30 seconds per question, so train your eyes to spot the stative verb instantly.
Banking (IBPS PO / SBI PO / Clerk):
Watch out for complex, long sentences where stative errors are hidden behind multiple adjectives or parenthetical clauses. Practice recognizing dual–nature verbs like think, see, and taste where the meaning shifts from stative to dynamic based on context. Spend 30–40 seconds analyzing the semantic intent of the verb.
UPSC / CAT / CLAT:
Focus on narrative clarity, conditional synchronization rules, and the logical progression of timelines. You must master how tense shifts change the meaning of the passage. Spend 45–60 seconds per question to ensure you understand the exact relationship between parallel and interrupting actions.
Defence / Railways / State PSC:
Direct applications are highly favored here, especially the when/while past interruption matrix. Ensure you memorize the core structural formulas for Present, Past, and Future Continuous layouts to quickly handle fill–in–the–blank questions. You should aim to solve these in under 20 seconds.
