    1. Mindmap

Section 1 – What is a Verb and Why Should You Care?

Imagine sitting in the exam hall, staring at a lengthy error–spotting question. You scan the nouns, verify the pronouns, and double–check the prepositions. Everything looks fine. Yet, there is a hidden error ticking away right in the center of the sentence, waiting to steal your hard–earned marks. That error almost always involves a verb—the most heavily tested yet frequently misunderstood topic in competitive English.

A verb is an essential structural element in a sentence that establishes what the subject is doing, what state it is in, or how it links to its surrounding environment. It serves as the functional heartbeat of any clause, transforming a collection of nouns into a dynamic, meaningful assertion. Without an active verb, a complete and grammatically valid English sentence simply cannot exist.

    💬 BhashaLab Chai-Time Analogy: Verb

Mastering action, linking, and helping verbs is not just about learning definitions—it is about securing your score. This single topic directly accounts for 2–5 marks across major competitive exams like SSC CGL/CHSL, Banking (SBI/IBPS PO & Clerk), UPSC CSAT, and Defence exams. Let us break down these rules so you can spot examiner traps instantly.

Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown

Sub–Topic 2.1: Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs – Transitive & Intransitive)

    A) Definition

Action verbs express a physical or mental activity performed directly by or upon the subject of a sentence. They are sub–categorized into transitive verbs, which require a direct object to complete their meaning, and intransitive verbs, which complete their meaning without transferring action to an object.

    B) How to Identify

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Isolate the main assertive word that describes what the subject does physically or mentally.

    1. वाक्य में उस मुख्य शब्द को अलग करें जो यह दिखाता है कि कर्ता (Subject) शारीरिक या मानसिक रूप से क्या कर रहा है।

    2. Apply the "What?" or "Whom?" test immediately after reading this specific verb.

    2. उस क्रिया (Verb) को पढ़ने के तुरंत बाद अपने मन में "क्या?" या "किसको?" का प्रश्न पूछें।

    3. If the sentence provides a direct answer to that question, classify the verb as Transitive.

    3. यदि वाक्य में उस "क्या" या "किसको" का सीधा उत्तर मौजूद है, तो उसे सकर्मक (Transitive) मानें।

    4. If the verb transitions directly into a preposition or adverb with no target object, mark it Intransitive.

    4. यदि क्रिया के तुरंत बाद कोई Preposition या Adverb आ जाए और कोई वस्तु न हो, तो उसे अकर्मक (Intransitive) मार्क करें।

    C) Quick Examples Table

    Sub-type / Context

    Example Sentence

    Target Action Verb

    Grammatical Destination

    Transitive Action

The specialized logistics team dispatched the sensitive consignment.

    dispatched

    Direct Object is consignment

    Intransitive Action

The elderly night watchman sneezed loudly under the corridor lamp.

    sneezed

No object exists; loudly is an adverb

    Transitive Mental

The senior researcher analyzed the statistical anomalies.

    analyzed

    Direct Object is anomalies

    Intransitive Motion

The heavy corporate elevator descended slowly to the basement floor.

    descended

Modifying element is a spatial adverb

    Dual Nature (Transitive)

The young apprentice chef cooked a traditional Mughlai dish.

    cooked

Here cooked takes a clear target object

    D) The #1 Exam Rule

    • Intransitive Passive Prohibition: Intransitive verbs cannot be transformed into the passive voice because they completely lack a direct object to serve as the new subject (e.g., writing "He was fallen from the terrace" is structurally incorrect; it must be written as "He fell from the terrace").

💡 BhashaLab Tip: Examiners love to sneak the preposition "about" right after words like discuss, describe, or order to match the conversational Hindi pattern "इसके बारे में चर्चा करना". Remember, these are highly transitive verbs; they do not need a prepositional bridge to reach their object! – BhashaLab

Sub–Topic 2.2: Linking Verbs (Copular Verbs)

    A) Definition

A linking verb does not express any physical action; instead, it serves as an equal sign or structural bridge connecting the subject to additional explanatory information, known as the subject complement. This complement is either a noun that renames the subject or an adjective that describes its state of being.

    B) How to Identify

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Replace the suspect verb with a standard equal sign (=) or a basic form of the verb to be (is, am, are).

    1. संदिग्ध क्रिया (Verb) की जगह पर मन में एक बराबर (=) का चिह्न या साधारण is, am, are रखकर देखें।

    2. Check if the sentence still maintains its core identity and logical meaning after the substitution.

    2. देखें कि क्या इस बदलाव के बाद भी वाक्य का मूल अर्थ और तर्क पूरी तरह सुरक्षित रहता है।

    3. Inspect what immediately follows the verb—if it is a modifying descriptive adjective, the verb is Linking.

    3. क्रिया के ठीक बाद आने वाले शब्द को देखें—यदि वह कोई विशेषता बताने वाला Adjective है, तो Verb Linking है।

    4. Contrast it with action: check if the subject is performing a physical movement or remaining static.

    4. एक्शन से तुलना करें: देखें कि क्या कर्ता कोई शारीरिक हरकत कर रहा है या स्थिर अवस्था में है।

    C) Quick Examples Table

    Adjective

    Identity

Dr. Sen became the chief medical director of the facility.

    became

    director

    Noun

    D) The #1 Exam Rule

    • Adjective Modifier Requirement: Linking verbs must always be modified by an adjective, never an adverb, because the modifier describes the state of the subject rather than the action of the verb itself (e.g., "The food smelled delicious", NOT "The food smelled deliciously").

Sub–Topic 2.3: Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs – Primary & Modal)

    A) Definition

Helping verbs are placed before a main verb to alter its tense, mood, or voice. They are divided into Primary Auxiliaries (be, do, have), which adjust to match the number and person of the subject, and Modal Auxiliaries (can, must, should), which remain unchanged and express conditions like permission, ability, obligation, or possibility.

    💬 BhashaLab Tip:Helping Verbs (सहायक क्रियाएं) मुख्य क्रिया से पहले आकर उसका समय (Tense) या मिजाज (Mood) तय करती हैं। जैसे: "वह पढ़ रहा है" में 'रहा है' टाइमलाइन बता रहा है। इनमें is, am, are, has, did जैसे Primary शब्द कर्ता के बदलते ही अपना रूप बदल लेते हैं, जबकि can, might, must जैसे Modals हर हाल में एक जैसे ही रहते हैं।

    B) How to Identify

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Locate the multi–word verb cluster in the sentence and find the final word, which is the main lexical verb.

    1. वाक्य में एक साथ आए क्रियाओं के समूह को देखें और उसके अंतिम शब्द को पहचानें, जो मुख्य काम (Main Verb) होता है।

    2. Identify the initial or intermediate verbs that appear directly before that main verb.

    2. उस मुख्य क्रिया से ठीक पहले आने वाली शुरुआती या बीच की क्रियाओं को मार्क करें।

    3. Check if the word changes its spelling when you switch the subject from singular to plural.

    3. देखें कि क्या कर्ता (Subject) को एकवचन से बहुवचन करने पर उस शब्द की स्पेलिंग बदल रही है (यदि हाँ, तो Primary है)।

    4. Look out for absolute modal traits: check if the word is followed by a base form verb without the word "to".

    4. मोडल के लक्षणों को पहचानें: देखें कि क्या उस शब्द के तुरंत बाद बिना "to" के क्रिया का पहला रूप लगा है।

    C) Quick Examples Table

    States structural capacity

    Semi-Modal

    to respect

Citizens ought to respect the historical artifacts inside public museums.

    Shows deep moral obligation

    D) The #1 Exam Rule

    • The Modal Bare Infinitive Law: Modal auxiliaries must always be followed directly by a bare infinitive—the absolute base form of the verb without the word "to" (e.g., "He can speak fluent German", NOT "He can to speak fluent German", with "ought to" and "used to" being the only standard structural exceptions).

Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)

Examiners set the exact same structural traps every single year, exploiting common patterns of speech to cloud your grammatical judgment. Memorize these edge cases to spot them instantly on your paper.

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: Since the chef is a human being, writing "The freshly baked bread smelled deliciously" sounds completely correct and natural.

Correct answer: The freshly baked bread smelled delicious.

Rule: When sensory verbs express a passive quality belonging to the subject rather than an active movement, they act as linking verbs and must take an adjective instead of an adverb.

Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS Clerk

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: It is perfectly correct to write "The delegation comprised of five senior diplomats."

Correct answer: The delegation comprised five senior diplomats. (Or: The delegation was comprised of...)

Rule: The highly transitive verb comprise contains the meaning of "consist of" within itself, making the addition of the preposition of in the active voice completely redundant.

    Seen in: SSC CHSL, NDA

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: In "The director as well as his assistants are attending the gala," the helping verb should be plural because multiple people are attending.

Correct answer: The director as well as his assistants is attending the gala.

Rule: When a subject is joined to other nouns using phrases like as well as, along with, together with, or accompanied by, the auxiliary verb must agree strictly with the first noun mentioned.

Seen in: SBI PO, RRB NTPC

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: To show both obligation and capability, it is fine to write "The candidate must can pass the physical test."

Correct answer: The candidate must be able to pass the physical test.

Rule: Stacking two modal auxiliaries directly next to each other in the same clause is completely prohibited; the second capacity must be expressed using an equivalent descriptive phrase.

Seen in: UPSC CSAT, IBPS PO

💡 BhashaLab Tip: Examiners love to combine possibility (may/might) with ability (can/could) in long sentences to see if you catch the double–modal error. If you spot two modals side–by–side, do not even bother reading the rest of the clause—you have found the error! – BhashaLab

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: Run fast lest you should not miss the competitive exam train.

Correct answer: Run fast lest you should miss the competitive exam train.

Rule: The conjunction lest inherently means "for fear that not," meaning it already contains a negative charge; adding the word not inside the subordinate clause creates a wrong double negative.

    Seen in: SSC CGL, CDS

    ⚠️ EXAM TRAP

What students think: The board decided to completely scrap the project.

Correct answer: The board decided to scrap the project completely.

Rule: An adverb should not be placed between the particle to and the base form of the verb in formal writing; keep the infinitive unit unified.

Seen in: IBPS PO, LIC AAO

Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Q1. The newly appointed manager (a) / discussed about the operational restructuring (b) / for more than three hours yesterday (c) / No error (d)

    SSC CGL Style

    Difficulty: Easy

    ✅ Correct: (b)

Explanation (English): The verb discuss is highly transitive, meaning it passes its action directly to the object without needing a preposition. Adding the word about creates a structural redundancy. The clause must be corrected to discussed the operational restructuring.

Rule tested: Section 2.1 – Direct Object Proximity for Transitive Verbs rule.

Q2. The street food vendor (a) / prepared the signature dish (b) / highly quick and efficiently (c) / No error (d)

    SSC CHSL Style

    Difficulty: Medium

    ✅ Correct: (c)

Explanation (English): The word prepared functions as an action verb in this sentence. Therefore, it must be modified by an adverb rather than an adjective. The adjective quick must be changed to the adverb quickly to maintain parallel structure with efficiently.

    समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (c) में एरर है। यहाँ पर खाना 'बनाने' (prepared) का एक फिजिकल काम हो रहा है, यानी यह एक Action Verb है। एक्शन वर्ब की विशेषता बताने के लिए हमें Adverb की ज़रूरत होती है। चूँकि efficiently एक adverb है, तो उसके साथी quick को भी बदलकर quickly करना होगा।

Rule tested: Section 2.1 – Action Verb Adverbial Modification rule.

Q3. The regulatory board members (a) / are fully aware that the corporate audit (b) / might can expose several financial systemic loopholes (c) / if executed transparently (d) / No error (e)

    Banking PO Style

    Difficulty: Hard

    ✅ Correct: (c)

Explanation (English): The sentence contains a double modal error in part (c), where might and can are placed back–to–back. A clause can only support one modal auxiliary to modify a single verb. The phrase must be rewritten as might be able to expose.

    समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): वाक्य के part (c) में गंभीर त्रुटि है। यहाँ might और can दो Modal Auxiliaries को एक साथ चिपका दिया गया है। इंग्लिश ग्रामर में दो मोडाल्स एक साथ एक ही काम के लिए नहीं आ सकते। इस गलती को सुधारने के लिए हमें might be able to expose लिखना पड़ेगा।

Rule tested: Section 2.3 – Double Modal Prohibition rule.

    🇮🇳 BhashaLab Reality Check: बैंकिंग एग्जाम्स में वाक्य को जानबूझकर लंबा और मुश्किल बनाया जाता है ताकि आपका ध्यान भटके। बस एक बात याद रखो: जैसे एक म्यान में दो तलवारें नहीं रह सकतीं, वैसे ही एक क्रिया के लिए दो Modals साथ नहीं आ सकते। जहाँ भी might can या should must दिखे, उसे तुरंत गलत मार्क कर दो! – BhashaLab

Q4. The chef tasted the spicy continental sauce (a) / cautiously before declaring that (b) / it tasted deliciously and uniquely (c) / to the restaurant guests (d) / No error (e)

    Banking Clerk Style

    Difficulty: Medium

    ✅ Correct: (c)

Explanation (English): In part (a), tasted is an action verb because the chef is actively tasting, making the adverb cautiously correct. However, in part (c), tasted functions as a linking verb because it describes the static quality of the sauce. Therefore, it requires the adjectives delicious and unique instead of adverbs.

Rule tested: Section 2.2 – Rule 2 (The Sensory Double Role Trap).

Q5. If the administrative council had managed (a) / the public funds efficiently, (b) / the infrastructure crisis could avoid (c) / without taxing the local citizens further (d) / No error (e)

    UPSC CSAT Style

    Difficulty: Medium

    ✅ Correct: (c)

Explanation (English): The subject of the conditional clause is the infrastructure crisis, which cannot perform the action of avoiding on its own. The sentence requires a passive modal construction. The phrase must be adjusted to could have been avoided.

    समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): यहाँ part (c) में एरर है। संकट (crisis) खुद किसी चीज़ को 'टाल' (avoid) नहीं सकता, बल्कि संकट को इंसानों द्वारा 'टाला जाना' चाहिए था। यानी यह वाक्य Passive Voice में होना चाहिए था। पास्ट की बात होने के कारण यहाँ could have been avoided का प्रयोग सही होगा।

Rule tested: Section 2.3 – Past Passive Modal Construction rule.

Q6. The brave commando unit (a) / dared not to retreat (b) / even when surrounded by the enemy forces (c) / No error (d)

    Defence Style – CDS

    Difficulty: Medium

    ✅ Correct: (b)

Explanation (English): When dare is used as a negative modal auxiliary (indicated by the presence of not), it must be followed by a bare infinitive. The particle to must be removed to correct the sentence to dared not retreat.

    समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (b) में भूल है। जब dare के साथ not लग जाता है, तो वह एक Modal Auxiliary की तरह काम करने लगता है। मोडल क्रियाओं का नियम है कि वे अपने पीछे सीधा क्रिया का मूल रूप लेती हैं, उनके साथ to लगाने का अधिकार किसी को नहीं है। इसलिए यहाँ dared not retreat होगा।

Rule tested: Section 3 – Exception Trap 07 (Dare/Need Modal Constraints).

Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make

ERROR TYPE: Sensory Verb Adverbial Pollution

Wrong: The interior decorative layout looks beautifully and exceptionally spacious.

Correct: The interior decorative layout looks beautiful and exceptionally spacious.

Why: The verb looks functions as a static linking verb here, connecting the subject to its state of being. It must be followed by a descriptive adjective (beautiful), not an adverb.

    💬 Hindi: छात्र अक्सर सोचते हैं कि क्रिया की विशेषता बताने के लिए हमेशा '-ly' वाला शब्द (adverb) ही आना चाहिए। लेकिन जब क्रिया केवल दिखने या होने का अहसास कराए (Linking Verb), तो वहाँ एडवर्ब नहीं, बल्कि एडजेक्टिव आता है। "कमरा सुंदर दिखता है", इसलिए looks beautiful सही है।

    Seen in: SSC CGL, CUET

ERROR TYPE: Transitive Redundant Preposition Insertion

Wrong: The internal committee will investigate into the alleged financial embezzlement.

Correct: The internal committee will investigate the alleged financial embezzlement.

Why: The verb investigate is a highly transitive verb that acts directly upon its object. Adding the preposition into is redundant.

    💬 Hindi: हमारी यह गलती इसलिए होती है क्योंकि हम हिंदी में बोलते हैं "मामले में जांच करना"। इंग्लिश में investigate शब्द के अंदर ही 'जांच में जाना' शामिल है, इसलिए अलग से into लगाना गलत है। सीधा investigate the matter बोलें।

    Seen in: NDA, RRB NTPC

ERROR TYPE: Active Voice Passive Inversion of Intransitive Verbs

Wrong: The massive structural fire was vanished within a few hours.

Correct: The massive structural fire vanished within a few hours.

Why: The verb vanish is intrinsically intransitive and cannot take an object. Because it cannot take an object, it cannot be written in a passive form (was vanished).

    💬 Hindi: छात्र सोचते हैं कि आग किसी के द्वारा 'बुझाई गई' की तरह 'गायब की गई' होगी। लेकिन vanish (गायब होना) एक अकर्मक क्रिया है, जो खुद–ब–खुद होती है। इसे जबरदस्ती was देकर पैसिव वॉइस में ढालना व्याकरण के नियमों के विरुद्ध है।

Seen in: IBPS Clerk, SSC CHSL

ERROR TYPE: Split Infinitive Structural Interruption

Wrong: The management requested the staff to carefully review the new guidelines.

Correct: The management requested the staff to review the new guidelines carefully.

Why: Placing the adverb carefully directly between the infinitive marker to and the base verb review violates the rule against split infinitives in formal grammar. Keep to review together as a clean unit.

    💬 Hindi: इंग्लिश के नियम के अनुसार to और क्रिया के पहले रूप को एक पवित्र जोड़ी माना जाता है। इनके बीच में किसी भी तीसरे शब्द (जैसे Adverb) को घुसाना गलत माना जाता है। इसलिए carefully को क्रिया के बाद फेंक दें।

    Seen in: SBI PO, XAT

ERROR TYPE: Double Modal Structural Accumulation

Wrong: The regional head chef should must inspect the sanitation standards daily.

Correct: The regional head chef must inspect the sanitation standards daily.

Why: A single clause cannot support two modal auxiliaries modifying the same main verb back–to–back. Pick the one that accurately reflects the required level of obligation.

    💬 Hindi: जब छात्र सोचते हैं कि "सलाह भी देनी है और ज़रूरी भी करना है", तो वे should और must दोनों को साथ में लिख देते हैं। इंग्लिश ग्रामर में यह पूरी तरह वर्जित है। किसी एक ही शब्द का चयन करें जो सबसे ज्यादा ज़रूरी हो।

Section 6 – Previous Year Questions — Test Yourself

These questions have actually appeared in competitive exams. Try each one before reading the answer.

    1. The international delegation (a) / ordered for a grand dinner (b) / at the heritage luxury hotel (c) / No error (d)

      SSC CGL

      Answer: (b)

Explanation (English): The verb order functions as a transitive verb in this context, passing its action directly to the object dinner. Inserting the preposition for is completely redundant and grammatically incorrect.

      समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (b) में एरर है। जब order शब्द एक क्रिया (Verb) की तरह काम करता है, तो उसके तुरंत बाद वस्तु का नाम आता है, बीच में for लगाने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं होती। हम हिंदी में "खाने के लिए आर्डर देना" सोचते हैं, जिससे यह गलती होती है।

    2. The patient was appeared (a) / extremely weak and exhausted (b) / during the clinical examination (c) / No error (d)

      SSC CHSL

      Answer: (a)

Explanation (English): Appear is a linking verb that naturally describes a state of being. It is an intransitive structure that cannot be written in the passive voice form (was appeared); it must be written in the active past form appeared.

      समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (a) में त्रुटि है। शब्द appear (प्रतीत होना) एक अकर्मक और लिंकिंग क्रिया है। इसे कभी भी पैसिव वॉइस में was appeared नहीं लिखा जा सकता। सही रूप केवल appeared होगा।

    3. The managing board members (a) / suggested that the newly recruited team (b) / should can handle the pressure efficiently (c) / No error (d) / None of these (e)

      IBPS PO

      Answer: (c)

Explanation (English): The sentence contains a double modal error in part (c), where should and can are placed sequentially to modify the verb handle. It must be corrected to should be able to handle.

      समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (c) में गलती है। जैसे हमने पहले सीखा था, should और can दोनों मोडल वर्ब्स हैं और दोनों एक साथ मिलकर एक ही काम को नहीं संभाल सकते। बैंकिंग परीक्षाओं में यह जाल बार–बार बिछाया जाता है।

    4. The freshly prepared coffee (a) / was smelling beautifully (b) / across the entire corporate conference hall (c) / No error (d)

      SBI Clerk

      Answer: (b)

Explanation (English): The sensory verb smell acts as a linking verb here because the coffee is not actively sniffing anything; it simply possesses a pleasing quality. Therefore, it requires the adjective beautiful instead of the adverb beautifully.

      समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (b) में एरर है। कॉफी खुद किसी चीज़ को सूंघ नहीं रही है, बल्कि उसकी खुद की खुशबू अच्छी है। इसलिए यहाँ smelling एक Linking Verb है, जिसके पीछे एडवर्ब (beautifully) नहीं, बल्कि एडजेक्टिव (beautiful) आना चाहिए।

    5. The heavy iron bridge (a) / was collapsed suddenly (b) / during the peak monsoon season (c) / No error (d)

      UPSC CSAT

      Answer: (b)

Explanation (English): The verb collapse is an intransitive action verb that completed its meaning without transferring action to an object. Therefore, it cannot be written in a passive voice format; it must be corrected to collapsed suddenly.

      समझाएं (Hindi – Std 8 level): इसके part (b) में भूल है। पुल किसी के द्वारा ढहाया नहीं गया, वह खुद गिर गया (collapsed). चूँकि collapse एक Intransitive Verb है, इसका passive voice (was collapsed) बनाना व्याकरण के दृष्टिकोण से अशुद्ध है।

    Section 7 – Practice Worksheet

Test your concepts with our specially curated worksheet, designed to reinforce your learning instantly. It contains 20 questions across all difficulty levels with instant answer checking to measure your exam readiness.

    Section 8 – Exam-wise Quick Strategy

SSC (CGL / CHSL / MTS):

Focus heavily on direct applied errors in Spotting the Error and Sentence Improvement sections. Pay close attention to transitive prepositions (comprise of) and linking verbs followed by adverbs. A great time–management tip is to scan the text specifically for sensory verbs and verify their modifier alignment within 3 seconds.

Banking (IBPS PO / SBI PO / Clerk):

Expect verb concepts to be embedded inside complex, dense multi–clause structures. Watch out for double modals separated by parenthetical adverbs or shifting verb roles (action vs. linking) across the text. Isolate the main verb from long descriptive phrases to check its structural validity first.

    UPSC / CAT / CLAT:

Verbs here evaluate your reading comprehension logic and precision. Errors like passive voice misplacement on intransitive verbs or split infinitives are often hidden in plain sight within formal prose. Use the basic logical tests (like the equal sign check for linking verbs) to spot errors quickly without rereading.

Defence / Railways / State PSC:

Questions focus on objective rule tracing, ordering of verb clauses, and straightforward error spotting. Focus on the core frameworks of helping verbs, modal alignment, and subject–auxiliary agreement. Speed is key, so make sure you memorize the 5–minute master revision rules.
