SECTION 2:किं शिक्षिष्यामः? | What Will You Learn?
Understand the core sequence and humorous insight of the classic fable 'दशमः त्वम् असि'.
Distinguish clearly between basic cardinal numbers (संख्या – एकम्, द्वे, त्रीणि) and ordinal ranking numbers (पूरणशब्दाः – प्रथमः, द्वितीयः, तृतीयः).
Apply ordinal adjectives correctly across masculine, feminine, and neuter genders to indicate ranks, days, and months.
Identify past tense verbs (लङ्-लकारः – अगच्छन्, अपृच्छत्, अगणयत्) and employ them accurately in narrative sentences.
SECTION 3:मुख्यशब्दाः | Important Vocabulary
पूरणार्थे – in the sense of expressing numerical order or ordinal rank – masculine locative singular compound.

SECTION 4:पाठस्य सारः | Lesson Summary
A teacher reviews the results of a Sanskrit Olympiad, introducing ordinal ranks like prathama, dvitīyā, and tṛtīyam as students announce their placements. When curiosity arises about the tenth position, the teacher narrates the famous story of ten boys who went to swim in a river. After swimming across, their leader counts the group to ensure everyone is safe. He counts nine companions but forgets to include himself. Another boy repeats the count and commits the identical blunder. Convinced that their tenth companion has drowned, the boys sit weeping in despair. A passing traveller notices their sorrow, observes ten standing boys, and asks the leader to count again. When the boy stops at nine, the traveller enlightens him: "You yourself are the tenth!" Relieved and overjoyed, the boys return home happily.
SECTION 5:पाठं अवगच्छामः | Understand the Lesson
कक्षायां स्थानक्रमचर्चा | Classroom Discussion on Olympiad Ranks The lesson opens with a teacher asking his students about their performance in the recent Sanskrit Olympiad. Vidyadhara secured the first position (प्रथमं स्थानम्), Priti came second (द्वितीया), Hemalata achieved third (तृतीयं स्थानम्), while other classmates proudly share that they ranked fourth, fifth, and ninth. When the teacher asks who stands tenth (दशमः कः?), the students admit they do not know. Using this prompt, the teacher transitions into an engaging traditional tale to explain the deeper meaning of the tenth person.
नदीस्नानं गणनाभ्रमः च | River Bath and the Counting Error Ten boys set out to bathe in a flowing river. After swimming happily for a long time, they cross over to the opposite bank. To verify that all have safely crossed, the group leader lines up his companions and counts: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Because he counts only those standing in front of him and forgets to count himself (सः आत्मानं न अगणयत्), he panics, shouting that the tenth boy is missing. Another boy repeats the count, makes the exact same omission, and concludes that their tenth companion has drowned in the deep water. Overwhelmed with grief, the boys sit by the riverbank in silent misery.
पथिकस्य आगमनं विवेकबोधः च | The Traveller Arrives and Removes the Illusion A passing traveller (पथिकः) encounters the weeping children and inquires about their distress. The leader explains that ten entered the river to bathe, but only nine emerged. Looking at the group, the traveller quickly spots all ten boys standing alive and healthy. He asks the leader to count aloud once more. The boy counts up to nine and halts. The traveller taps the boy and utters the famous teaching: "दशमः त्वम् असि" (You are the tenth!).
भ्रमनाशः आनन्दः च | The Return of Joy Hearing this simple insight, the boys instantly realize their foolish oversight. Their sorrow vanishes, and shouting with immense delight that the tenth boy has been found, they head back to their village together in high spirits. Beyond its humor, the story highlights how humans often look everywhere outside for what is already present within themselves.
SECTION 7:भाषापद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works
संख्याशब्दाः पूरणशब्दाः च | Cardinal Numbers vs. Ordinal Rank Words
रूपम् | Form: While cardinal numbers count quantity (एकम्, द्वे, त्रीणि, दश), ordinal numbers designate sequential rank or placement and modify nouns like adjectives across three genders:
अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: Ordinals agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they qualify (e.g., प्रथमः बालकः, प्रथमा बालिका, प्रथमं स्थानम्).
उदाहरणानि | Examples:
विद्याधरः प्रथमं स्थानं प्राप्तवान्। (Vidyadhara attained the first rank.)
सप्ताहस्य प्रथमः दिवसः रविवासरः अस्ति। (The first day of the week is Sunday.)
दशमः त्वम् असि। (You are the tenth one.)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Cardinal numbers answer 'how many' (कति), whereas ordinal numbers answer 'which one in order' (कतमः / कतमा / कतमम्).
लङ्-लकारः (अनद्यतन-भूतकालः) | Simple Past Tense Narration
रूपम् | Form: Past tense verbs in ਲङ्-लकार take an initial अ- augment before the verbal root:
गम् (गच्छ्): अगच्छत् (singular) – अगच्छताम् (dual) – अगच्छन् (plural)
कृ: अकरोत् – अकुरुताम् – अकुर्वन्
स्था: अतिष्ठत् – अतिष्ठताम् – अतिष्ठन्
अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: This tense narrates historical events, completed actions, and classic stories.
उदाहरणानि | Examples:
दश बालकाः स्नानाय नदीम् अगच्छन्। (Ten boys went to the river for a bath.)
पथिकः बालकान् अपृच्छत्। (The traveller asked the boys.)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember: A past tense verb in ਲङ्-लकार starts with the augment अ- and matches the subject in person and number.
SECTION 8:शब्दसम्बन्धाः | How Words Work Together
उदाहरणम् १ दश बालकाः स्नानाय नदीम् अगच्छन्। Ten boys went to the river for bathing.
बालकाः is the masculine subject (कर्त्ता) in the nominative plural (प्रथमा विभक्तिः, बहुवचनम्).
दश is the cardinal numeral adjective specifying the exact count of the boys; from five onwards, cardinal numbers take the same invariant form across all three genders.
स्नानाय expresses the underlying purpose of movement, placed in the dative singular (चतुर्थी विभक्तिः, एकवचनम्).
नदीम् is the destination of motion (कर्म), taking the accusative singular (द्वितीया विभक्तिः).
अगच्छन् is the past tense verb (लङ्-लकारः, प्रथमपुरुषः, बहुवचनम्) agreeing with the plural subject बालकाः.
उदाहरणम् २ बुद्धिमान् पथिकः दुःखितान् बालकान् अपृच्छत्। The wise traveller asked the sorrowful boys.
पथिकः is the masculine singular agent (कर्त्ता) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः).
बुद्धिमान् is the qualifying adjective (विशेषणम्) agreeing with पथिकः in masculine gender, nominative case, and singular number.
बालकान् is the direct object (कर्म) receiving the inquiry, placed in the accusative plural (द्वितीया विभक्तिः, बहुवचनम्).
दुःखितान् is an attributive adjective modifying बालकान्, matching it in masculine gender, accusative case, and plural number.
अपृच्छत् is the past active verb (लङ्-लकारः, प्रथमपुरुषः, एकवचनम्) matching the singular subject पथिकः.
SECTION 9:मुख्यरूपाणि | Important Forms
पूरणप्रत्ययान्तानि रूपाणि (Ordinal Number Forms: 1st to 10th)
Notice that masculine ordinals end in -अः, neuter ordinals end in -अम्, and feminine ordinals end in either -आ (1st to 3rd) or long -ई (4th to 10th).
Example: चैत्रः भारतीयवर्षस्य प्रथमः मासः अस्ति। (Chaitra is the first month of the Indian year.)
SECTION 10:वाक्यप्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit
पद्धतिः १: काल-क्रम-बोधकवाक्यम् (Calendar and Time Order Pattern)
Pattern: [Unit in षष्ठी] + [Ordinal in प्रथमा] + दिवसः / मासः + अस्ति
Example: सप्ताहस्य प्रथमः दिवसः रविवासरः अस्ति। (The first day of the week is Sunday.)
Variation: आङ्ग्लवर्षस्य दशमः मासः अक्तूबर-मासः भवति। (The tenth month of the Gregorian calendar is October.)
Explanation: Use masculine ordinals (प्रथमः, द्वितीयः, दशमः) to describe days and months because दिवसः and मासः are masculine nouns.
पद्धतिः २: स्त्रीलिङ्ग-स्थानक्रमवाक्यम् (Feminine Placement and Rank Pattern)
Pattern: [Feminine Noun] + [Ordinal ending in -आ / -ई] + अस्ति
Example: करे पञ्चमी अङ्गुलिः कनिष्ठिका भवति। (The fifth finger on the hand is the little finger.)
Variation: सा कक्षायां द्वितीया अभवत्। (She stood second in the class.)
Explanation: When the noun being ranked is feminine (such as अङ्गुलिः, कक्षा, or a girl's name), use the feminine ordinal forms प्रथमा, द्वितीया, तृतीया, चतुर्थी, or पञ्चमी.
पद्धतिः ३: आत्मबोधक-सम्बोधनवाक्यम् ('दशमस्त्वमसि' Direct Identity Pattern)
Pattern: [Ordinal Noun in प्रथमा] + त्वम् असि
Example: दशमः त्वम् असि। (You yourself are the tenth!)
Variation: श्रेष्ठः त्वम् असि। (You are the best.)
Explanation: This construction identifies the listener directly with the missing or sought-after quality.
SECTION 11:मुख्यविचाराः | Important Ideas
The Fallacy of External Searching: The boys searched desperately all around them for their missing companion while forgetting the observer himself; humans frequently search the outside world for peace and truth that already reside within.
The Role of the Guru / Guide: The traveller acts as a wise mentor (गुरु) who does not create a tenth person out of thin air, but simply directs the boy's attention inward to dispel an illusion caused by ignorance.
Precision of Numerical Language: Sanskrit clearly distinguishes between counting quantities (one, two, three) and assigning positions (first, second, third), enabling clear communication across ranks, dates, and sequences.
SECTION 12:स्वावबोधनं परीक्षस्व | Check Your Understanding
विवरणम्: The feminine noun अङ्गुलिः requires the feminine ordinal form चतुर्थी to describe the fourth finger.
प्रश्नः ४ पथिकः बालकानां दुःखं कथं निवारितवान्?
उत्तरम्: पथिकः नायकं पुनः बालकान् गणयितुम् आदिशत्, यदा च नायकः नव बालकान् एव अगणयत् तदा पथिकः "दशमः त्वम् असि" इति बोधयित्वा तेषां दुःखं निवारितवान्।
SECTION 13:स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | Five Things to Remember
The story of the ten swimmers illustrates how self-forgetfulness (आत्मविस्मृतिः) creates unnecessary sorrow until wise guidance dispels the confusion.
Cardinal numbers (संख्या) denote volume or total count (e.g., दश बालकाः), whereas ordinal numbers (पूरणशब्दाः) indicate specific serial order (e.g., दशमः बालकः).
Ordinals behave like adjectives and adapt to all three genders: प्रथमः (masculine), प्रथमा (feminine), and प्रथमम् (neuter).
From five onwards, basic counting numbers have one common form across all genders, but ordinal numbers maintain distinct masculine, feminine, and neuter forms throughout.
The past tense (लङ्-लकारः) employs an initial augment अ- (such as अगच्छत्, अपृच्छत्, अगणयत्) to narrate past actions.

सङ्कटनाशनं श्रीगणेशस्तोत्रम् | Shri Ganesha Stotra and Ordinal Epithets
The supplementary material presents the classic Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram, where Sage Narada enumerates the twelve sacred names of Lord Ganesha using sequential ordinal markers. The hymn assigns every name to an exact rank: प्रथमं वक्रतुण्डं च, एकदन्तं द्वितीयकम्, तृतीयं कृष्णपिङ्गाक्षं, गजवक्त्रं चतुर्थकम्, लम्बोदरं पञ्चमं च... द्वादशं तु गजाननम्. This devotional text serves as an authentic mnemonic device for practicing ordinal forms up to twelve.
Classical Sanskrit stotras routinely incorporate ordinal numbers to organize sacred attributes and facilitate memorization.
Chanting traditional verses allows students to internalize Sanskrit mathematical prefixes and ordinal sequences naturally through musical rhythm.
