SECTION 4:संवादस्य सारः | Overview of the Dialogue

An engaging classroom dialogue opens as a teacher points to an eye-catching map of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of India's prominent Union Territories whose capital is Sri Vijaya Puram, historically called Port Blair. A student named Suryansh shares his online research showing that the ancient name traces back to the Ramayana era as Handukman (linked to Hanuman), later referenced as Agademon. The class discusses its solemn historical role during British rule, where patriots including Swatantryaveer Savarkar endured a decade of unimaginable hardship inside the three-storied Cellular Jail, known as Kalapani. The conversation then moves to the islands' rich tribal heritage, flourishing coconut plantations, and breathtaking coastal biodiversity. Students learn about pristine tourist spots like Radhanagar Beach and adventure sports such as scuba diving and sea-walking along living coral reefs on Swaraj Dweep, concluding with deep patriotic appreciation for this sacred territory.

    SECTION 5:पाठं अवगच्छामः | Understand the Lesson

द्वीपस्य परिचयः नामेतिहासः च | Geographical Setting and Historical Identity The teacher presents an illustrated wall map of India, introducing the Andaman archipelago situated in the Bay of Bengal as one of India's eight Union Territories. She notes that its administrative capital is Sri Vijaya Puram, renaming the colonial designation Port Blair. Contributing to the inquiry, Suryansh explains that government research documents ancient designations: during the Ramayana age, the islands were called 'Handukman' (an etymological root of Hanuman), which evolved into 'Agademon' and 'Angademan' during the first century.

राष्ट्रभक्ति-तीर्थं सेल्यूलर-कारागारम् | Cellular Jail and the Freedom Struggle The discussion highlights the pivotal national significance of the islands. During colonial rule, the British constructed the notorious three-storied Cellular Jail to suppress revolutionaries fighting for India's independence. Dreaded under the name 'Kalapani', it was here that Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar underwent a decade of unimaginable torture for the liberation of the motherland. Recognised as a site of national penance and listed on international heritage registries, it stands as a revered pilgrim site of national devotion.

मूलजनजातयः तेषां जीवनपद्धतिः च | Indigenous Tribes and Livelihoods Responding to a student's question about local inhabitants, the teacher enumerates famous indigenous communities residing on the islands, including the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, and Sentinelese. To support the livelihoods of the Andamanese, Onge, and Jarawa tribes, the administration developed coconut groves and horticulture. In contrast, the Sentinelese remain isolated from modern civilization in limited numbers. Beyond farming, islanders sustain their economy through pearl craftsmanship, shell art, coconut carving, spice trading, and fisheries.

प्राकृतिकं सौन्दर्यं जलक्रीडाः च | Pristine Beaches and Marine Biodiversity Sharing personal travel experiences, a student named Rajarshi describes the emerald greenery and turquoise waters witnessed at Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, North Bay, and Kalapathar Beach. Radhanagar Beach holds a distinguished global reputation for its clean white sand, crystalline water, and transparent seabed. At Swaraj Dweep (formerly Havelock Island) and Elephant Beach, visitors participate in modern marine excursions such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and underwater sea-walking, gazing at underwater worlds populated by vibrant fish, sea turtles, and colorful coral reefs (प्रवालशृङ्खलाः).

SECTION 6:पदच्छेदः एवं अन्वयः | Word Separation and Prose Order

    उदाहरणम् १

    • पद्यभागः: हुतात्मनां पूततपःस्थलीयं विनायकादिस्तुतिभाजनानाम्।

    • पदच्छेदः: हुत-आत्मनाम् पूत-तपः-स्थली इयम् विनायक-आदि-स्तुति-भाजनानाम्।

    • अन्वयक्रमः: इयं विनायकादिस्तुतिभाजनानां हुतात्मनां पूततपःस्थली (अस्ति)।

    • Meaning: This island is the sacred site of penance of self-sacrificing martyrs worthy of praise, led by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Segmenting the conjunct 'पूततपःस्थलीयं' into 'पूततपःस्थली' (feminine noun) and 'इयम्' (feminine demonstrative pronoun) restores grammatical lucidity.

    • Meaning: Surrounded by charming deep-blue waters washing its body, the island of Andaman is the loveliest among all islands. The Avagraha in 'द्वीपोऽण्डमानः' separates neatly into the masculine nominative singular noun 'द्वीपः' and the proper noun 'अण्डमानः'.

SECTION 7भाषापद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

    विशेषण-विशेष्य-सम्बन्धः | Adjective-Noun Concord

    • रूपम् | Form: In Sanskrit, an adjective (विशेषणम्) must match the noun it describes (विशेष्यम्) in gender (लिङ्गम्), case (विभक्तिः), and number (वचनम्):

      • पुंलिङ्गम्: रमणीयः द्वीपः (attractive island), उन्नतम् वृक्षम् (tall tree)

      • स्त्रीलिङ्गम्: विशालां शालाम् (spacious school), नूतना क्रीडा (new game)

      • नपुंसकलिङ्गम्: नीलं जलम् (blue water), त्रितलात्मकं कारागारम् (three-storied prison)

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: Modifiers do not possess fixed independent forms; their endings adapt dynamically to mirror the core noun they qualify.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. अण्डमानद्वीपे निर्मलं जलं वर्तते। (Pure water exists on Andaman island.)

      2. तत्र विविधाः जनजातयः निवसन्ति। (Various tribal communities reside there.)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: "यल्लिङ्गं यद्वचनं या च विभक्तिर्विशेष्यस्य, तल्लिङ्गं तद्वचनं सा च विभक्तिर्विशेषणस्यापि।" The adjective mirrors its noun in gender, number, and case.

सर्वनामविशेषणानि | Demonstrative Pronouns Used as Adjectives

    • रूपम् | Form: Demonstrative pronouns such as तद् (सः, सा, तत्) and एतद् (एषः, एषा, एतत्) function as definite adjectives when placed directly before a noun:

      • एषः द्वीपसमूहः (This archipelago – masculine)

      • एषा राजधानी (This capital – feminine)

      • एतत् स्थानम् (This place – neuter)

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: When a pronoun directly qualifies a substantive noun, it serves as a demonstrative adjective agreeing in case and gender.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. एतस्मिन् द्वीपे बहवः वृक्षाः सन्ति। (In this island there are many trees.)

      2. वयं तस्यां शालायां पठामः। (We study in that school.)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Use matching demonstrative pronoun forms to identify or point specifically to particular objects and places.

SECTION 8:शब्दसम्बन्धाः | How Words Work Together

    उदाहरणम् १ स्वातन्त्र्यवीरः सावरकरः मातृभूमेः रक्षणाय घोरं कष्टं सोढवान्। Swatantryaveer Savarkar endured horrific suffering for the protection of the motherland.

    1. सावरकरः is the masculine singular agent (कर्त्ता) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः, एकवचनम्).

    2. स्वातन्त्र्यवीरः functions as an honorific attributive adjective (विशेषणम्) modifying सावरकरः in gender, case, and number.

    3. मातृभूमेः is in the genitive singular (षष्ठी विभक्तिः), specifying the nation whose protection is sought.

    4. रक्षणाय expresses the ultimate noble purpose, taking the dative singular ending (चतुर्थी विभक्तिः).

    5. कष्टम् is the direct object (कर्म) in the accusative singular, modified by the agreeing adjective घोरम्.

    6. सोढवान् is the active past participle (क्तवतु) completing the predicate.

    उदाहरणम् २ पर्यटकाः स्वच्छे समुद्रजले विविधवर्णान् मत्स्यान पश्यन्ति। Tourists observe multi-coloured fish in the clean sea-water.

    1. पर्यटकाः is the masculine plural subject (कर्त्ता) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः, बहुवचनम्).

    2. समुद्रजले is the locative singular noun (सप्तमी विभक्तिः) denoting the place of action, qualified by the agreeing adjective स्वच्छे in the locative singular.

    3. मत्स्यान् is the direct object (कर्म) in the accusative plural (द्वितीया विभक्तिः, बहुवचनम्).

    4. विविधवर्णान् is an adjective qualifying मत्स्यान्, precisely matching its accusative plural masculine form.

    5. पश्यन्ति is the active finite verb in the present tense (लट्-लकारः) matching the plural subject पर्यटकाः.

    SECTION 9:मुख्यरूपाणि | Important Forms

    षष्ठीतत्पुरुषसमासस्य रूपाणि (Genitive Compound Formations)

When two nouns joined by a possessive relationship (षष्ठी विभक्तिः) combine into a single compound word, the first noun drops its case ending:

    • द्वीपानां समूहः → द्वीपसमूहः (Group of islands)

    • रामायणस्य कालः → रामायणकालः (Time of Ramayana)

    • भारतस्य भूमिः → भारतभूमिः (Land of Bharat)

    • देशस्य भक्तः → देशभक्तः (Patriot / Devotee of the country)

    • समुद्रस्य तलम् → समुद्रतलम् (Seabed / Ocean floor)

Notice how the genitive inflection of the preceding word disappears in the compound, while the final component determines the gender and ending of the collective word.

Example: अण्डमान-द्वीपसमूहे रमणीयानि समुद्रतटानि सन्ति। (Charming seashores exist in the Andaman archipelago.)

SECTION 10:वाक्यप्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    पद्धतिः १: विशेषण-विशेष्य-वर्णनवाक्यम् (Descriptive Concord Pattern)

    • Pattern: [Subject with Adjective] + [Location with Adjective] + अस्ति / वर्तते

    • Example: अण्डमानद्वीपे निर्मलं जलं वर्तते। (Pure water exists on Andaman island.)

    • Variation: राधानगरतटे रमणीयः श्वेतरेणुः अस्ति। (Attractive white sand exists on Radhanagar Beach.)

    • Explanation: Ensure that every qualifying descriptive word matches the exact gender, number, and case of the noun being described.

    पद्धतिः २: आजीविकावाचकवाक्यम् (Expressing Economic Means Pattern)

    • Pattern: [People] + [Craft/Trade in तृतीया] + जीविकां निर्वहन्ति

    • Example: केचन जनाः मत्स्यव्यापारेण जीविकां निर्वहन्ति। (Some people sustain their livelihood through fish trade.)

    • Variation: ग्रामीणजनाः कृषिकार्येण जीवनं यापयन्ति। (Rural people lead their lives through agricultural work.)

    • Explanation: The instrumental case (तृतीया विभक्तिः) indicates the professional craft or economic activity sustaining life.

    पद्धतिः ३: साहसिक-क्रीडावर्णनवाक्यम् (Adventure Activity Pattern)

    • Pattern: [Location in सप्तमी] + [Adventure Sport] + प्रचलति / क्रियते

    • Example: स्वराजद्वीपे सिन्धुतलविहारः प्रचलति। (Sea-walking goes on at Swaraj Dweep.)

    • Variation: एलीफेण्टातटे स्कूबाडाइविङ्ग्-क्रीडा भवति। (Scuba-diving sport takes place at Elephant Beach.)

    • Explanation: The locative case marks the destination where aquatic or physical tourism activities take place.

    SECTION 11:मुख्यविचाराः | Important Ideas

    1. Unity of Nature and Patriotism: Andaman is not merely a vacation getaway; it holds a dual identity as an exquisite ecological reserve and an open-air shrine to the sacrifices of India's freedom fighters.

    2. Ecological and Tribal Preservation: The survival of uncontacted tribes like the Sentinelese and vulnerable communities like the Jarawas highlights the imperative to balance modernization with anthropological and environmental stewardship.

    3. Decolonising Cultural Geography: Restoring ancient and national names—such as Sri Vijaya Puram for Port Blair, and Swaraj Dweep for Havelock—re-anchors the islands in India's living cultural consciousness and independence history.

    SECTION 12:स्वावबोधनं परीक्षस्व | Check Your Understanding

विवरणम्: Because the noun 'जलम्' is neuter singular in the accusative case (द्वितीया विभक्तिः), the adjective 'निर्मल' adopts the identical ending 'निर्मलम्'.

    प्रश्नः ४ अण्डमानद्वीपे निवसन्तीनां चतसृणां प्रमुखजनजातीनां नामानि लिखन्तु।

    उत्तरम्: अण्डमानी, ओङ्गी, जारवा, सेण्टिनली च।

SECTION 13:स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | Five Things to Remember

    1. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands represent one of India's eight Union Territories, with its capital renamed as Sri Vijaya Puram.

    2. Ancient records trace the island's name to the Ramayana age as Handukman (associated with Hanuman) and classical maritime records as Agademon.

    3. The historical three-storied Cellular Jail (Kalapani) remains a national monument memorializing sacrifices by patriots like Veer Savarkar.

    4. An adjective in Sanskrit must mirror its substantive noun across gender, number, and case (यल्लिङ्गं यद्वचनं या च विभक्तिः).

    5. Beyond agriculture and fisheries, local tribal and island commerce thrives on crafts made from pearls, sea shells, and coconuts.

    अतिरिक्ताध्ययनम् | Additional Learning

    द्वीपपुनर्नामकरणं जलक्रीडाविज्ञानं च | Island Renaming and Marine Activities

The supplementary section documents how historic colonial names were realigned with national heritage. For example, Port Blair was renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, Ross Island became Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island became Shaheed Dweep, and Havelock Island was named Swaraj Dweep. It also explains technical marine activities in simple Sanskrit: scuba diving involves swimming underwater with an oxygen tank on one's back, snorkeling entails floating along the surface with an eye-mask, and sea-walking (सिन्धुतलविहारः) enables travelers to walk safely along the seabed amidst living coral reefs.

    1. Restoring national names to prominent geographic sites honours historical milestones and reinforces patriotic remembrance in curriculum design.

    2. Experiencing marine biodiversity firsthand fosters ecological awareness regarding the fragile balance of coral reef ecosystems in modern geography.
