    SECTION 4:पाठस्य सारः | Lesson Summary

In sixteenth-century Mewar, renowned King Maharana Sangram Singh passed away, leaving behind two young sons, Vikramaditya and Uday Singh. Their ambitious cousin Banvir murdered Vikramaditya through treachery to seize the throne of Mewar. To eliminate any future challenger and establish undisputed royal authority, Banvir conspired to assassinate child Prince Uday Singh during the night. Detecting the plot in time, the royal nurse Pannadhaya took a heartbreaking step: placing national preservation above personal attachment, she laid her own sleeping son Chandan in Uday Singh's bed while spiriting the prince to safety. Banvir stormed the chamber, mistook Chandan for Uday Singh, and murdered the child with his sword. Years later, Prince Uday Singh grew up, defeated Banvir in battle, reclaimed his ancestral throne, and fathered Maharana Pratap.

    SECTION 5:पाठं अवगच्छामः | Understand the Lesson

भारतभूमेः त्यागपरम्परा | The Tradition of Selfless Sacrifice The lesson opens by honouring India as the sacred land of valour and renunciation, echoing the Vedic declaration: 'माता भूमिः पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः'. Women have contributed immensely to defending the motherland, matching heroism on the battlefield with extraordinary inner fortitude. Among Rajasthan's celebrated heroines, Pannadhaya stands peerless as an embodiment of selfless duty, courage, and uncompromising loyalty.

मेवाडराज्ये षड्यन्त्रम् | The Treacherous Conspiracy in Mewar In the sixteenth century, Mewar was ruled by the famous Maharana Sangram Singh, whose sons were Vikramaditya and Uday Singh. His brother Prithviraj had a cunning son named Banvir. Banvir assassinated Vikramaditya through deceit and took over the administration of Mewar. Driven by greed to become the sole, undisputed heir without any rival, Banvir hatched a nighttime plot to assassinate the surviving young prince, Uday Singh.

पन्नाधायायाः अकल्पनीयः त्यागः | Pannadhaya's Heartbreaking Resolution Upon uncovering Banvir's murderous plan, the royal nurse Pannadhaya acted decisively. She knew that Uday Singh represented the legitimate royal dynasty of Mewar. Guided by the conviction that 'national interest is far superior to individual interest' (व्यक्तिहितं न, राष्ट्रहितम् एव श्रेष्ठम्), she placed her own beloved son Chandan into the royal bed, fully aware of the lethal outcome. Entering the dark chamber, Banvir assumed the sleeping boy was Uday Singh and brutally struck Chandan dead with his sword.

इतिहासस्य सुवर्णगाथा | The Golden Chapter of History Though her own child died, Pannadhaya saved Uday Singh and protected the future of Mewar from total ruin. Growing to adulthood, Uday Singh defeated Banvir in battle, claimed the crown of Mewar, and fathered the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap. History remembers that without Pannadhaya's sacrifice, Uday Singh would not have survived, and without Uday Singh, Maharana Pratap's heroism would never have dawned.

SECTION 7भाषापद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

    लङ्-लकारः (अनद्यतन-भूतकालः) | The Simple Past Tense

    • रूपम् | Form: The prefix augment अ- is attached before the verb root, ending in typical past tense person-markers:

      • प्रथमपुरुषः: अपठत् – अपठताम् – अपठन्

      • मध्यमपुरुषः: अपठः – अपठतम् – अपठत

      • उत्तमपुरुषः: अपठम् – अपठाव – अपठाम

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: Use the ਲङ्-लकार to narrate past historical events, legendary biographies, and completed actions.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. बनवीरः मेवाडस्य शासनम् अकरोत्। (Banvir ruled over Mewar.)

      2. पन्नाधाया मेवाडराज्यम् अरक्षत्। (Pannadhaya protected the kingdom of Mewar.)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Past tense verbs in ਲङ्-लकार carry an initial अ- augment and match their subject in person and number.

सवर्णदीर्घसन्धिः | Long Vowel Sandhi Rule

    • रूपम् | Form: When two similar short or long vowels meet across word boundaries, they coalesce into their corresponding long vowel:

      • अ/आ + अ/आ = आ (विद्या + अभ्यासः = विद्याभ्यासः; दैत्य + अरिः = दैत्यारिः)

      • इ/ई + इ/ई = ई (कवि + इन्द्रः = कवीन्द्रः; गिरि + ईशः = गिरीशः)

      • उ/ऊ + उ/ऊ = ऊ (सु + उक्तिः = सूक्तिः)

    • अर्थः एवं प्रयोगः | Meaning and Use: Combining similar adjacent vowels smooths pronunciation and produces single extended vowels in compound formations.

    • उदाहरणानि | Examples:

      1. विद्या + अर्थी = विद्यार्थी। (Seeker of learning)

      2. सु + उक्तिः = सूक्तिः। (Beautiful saying)

    • स्मरणीयम् | Remember: Two matching vowels combine into one prolonged long vowel (दीर्घस्वरः).

SECTION 8शब्दसम्बन्धाः | How Words Work Together

उदाहरणम् १ पन्नाधाया शयनस्थाने स्वपुत्रं चन्दनं शायितवती। Pannadhaya put her own son Chandan to sleep in the bed.

    1. पन्नाधाया is the feminine singular subject (कर्त्ता) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः, एकवचनम्).

    2. शयनस्थाने indicates the physical location (अधिकरणम्), taking the locative singular ending (सप्तमी विभक्तिः).

    3. चन्दनम् is the direct object (कर्म) receiving the action, placed in the accusative singular (द्वितीया विभक्तिः).

    4. स्वपुत्रम् is an attributive modifier qualifying चन्दनम्, agreeing in masculine accusative singular form.

    5. शायितवती is the past active participle (क्तवतु) agreeing with the feminine subject पन्नाधाया.

    उदाहरणम् २ उदयसिंहः युद्धे दुष्टं बनवीरं हत्वा राजा अभवत्। Having killed the wicked Banvir in battle, Uday Singh became the king.

    1. उदयसिंहः is the masculine singular subject (कर्त्ता) in the nominative case (प्रथमा विभक्तिः).

    2. युद्धे is the locative singular noun (सप्तमी विभक्तिः) specifying the place of conflict.

    3. बनवीरम् is the direct object (कर्म) in the accusative singular, qualified by the agreeing adjective दुष्टम्.

    4. हत्वा is an indeclinable past participle (क्त्वा-प्रत्ययः) expressing the completed prior action.

    5. अभवत् is the past tense verb (लङ्-लकारः) matching the singular subject उदयसिंहः.

    SECTION 9मुख्यरूपाणि | Important Forms

लङ्-लकार-रूपाणि (Simple Past Tense Verbal Paradigm)

    • पठ् धातु (to read):

      • प्रथमपुरुषः: अपठत् – अपठताम् – अपठन्

      • मध्यमपुरुषः: अपठः – अपठतम् – अपठत

      • उत्तमपुरुषः: अपठम् – अपठाव – अपठाम

    • रक्ष् धातु (to protect):

      • प्रथमपुरुषः: अरक्षत् – अरक्षताम् – अरक्षन्

      • मध्यमपुरुषः: अरक्षः – अरक्षतम् – अरक्षत

      • उत्तमपुरुषः: अरक्षम् – अरक्षाव – अरक्षाम

    • भू धातु (to become):

      • प्रथमपुरुषः: अभवत् – अभवताम् – अभवन्

      • मध्यमपुरुषः: अभवः – अभवतम् – अभवत

      • उत्तमपुरुषः: अभवम् – अभवाव – अभवाम

Every regular verb takes the augment अ- at its beginning, followed by standard past personal endings.

Example: पन्नाधाया राजकुमारस्य जीवनम् अरक्षत्। (Pannadhaya protected the life of the prince.)

SECTION 10वाक्यप्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    पद्धतिः १: भूतकालिक-कथावाक्यम् (Past Narrative Pattern)

    • Pattern: [Subject in प्रथमा] + [Direct Object in द्वितीया] + [Verb in लङ्-लकार]

    • Example: पन्नाधाया मेवाडराज्यम् अरक्षत्। (Pannadhaya protected the kingdom of Mewar.)

    • Variation: उदयसिंहः मेवाडस्य राजा अभवत्। (Uday Singh became the king of Mewar.)

    • Explanation: Use verbs in ਲङ्-लकार to state completed historical deeds and biographical milestones.

    पद्धतिः २: ल्यप् / क्त्वा प्रत्ययप्रयोगः (Sequential Action Pattern)

    • Pattern: [Subject] + [Object] + [क्त्वा / ल्यप् Form] + [Final Verb]

    • Example: बनवीरः विक्रमादित्यं छलेन मारयित्वा शासनम् अकरोत्। (Having killed Vikramaditya deceitfully, Banvir ruled.)

    • Variation: सा कुतन्त्रं ज्ञात्वा पुत्रं शयनस्थाने अशाययत्। (Having known the conspiracy, she put her son to bed.)

    • Explanation: The indeclinable affix क्त्वा / ल्यप् links a prior action with a concluding verb without repeating subjects.

    पद्धतिः ३: आदर्शसूचक-सङ्कल्पवाक्यम् (Ethical Principle Pattern)

    • Pattern: [Individual Concern] + न, + [National Welfare] + एव श्रेष्ठम्

    • Example: व्यक्तिहितं न, राष्ट्रहितम् एव श्रेष्ठम्। (Not personal gain, but the welfare of the nation alone is supreme.)

    • Variation: स्वार्थः न, परोपकारः एव महान्। (Not selfishness, but altruism alone is great.)

    • Explanation: Contrasting two ideals highlights uncompromising patriotic duty.

    SECTION 11मुख्यविचाराः | Important Ideas

    1. Nation Above Self: Pannadhaya lived the eternal ideal that maternal love, though profound, must defer to national survival when the safety of the motherland is at stake (व्यक्तिहितं न, राष्ट्रहितम् एव श्रेष्ठम्).

    2. The Butterfly Effect of History: One silent act of courage preserves an entire civilisation; without Pannadhaya's resolute sacrifice, the lineage of Uday Singh and the valorous struggle of Maharana Pratap would have been extinguished.

    3. Enduring Renunciation: Power seized by treachery is ephemeral, but sacrifice undertaken for righteous duty earns eternal remembrance in human memory (आचन्द्रार्कं तिष्ठति).

    SECTION 12स्वावबोधनं परीक्षस्व | Check Your Understanding

विवरणम्: The root भू joins with the past tense augment to form अभवत् in the third-person singular (लङ्-लकारः, प्रथमपुरुषः, एकवचनम्).

SECTION 13स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | Five Things to Remember

    1. Pannadhaya, the royal nurse of sixteenth-century Mewar, sacrificed her own son Chandan to preserve young Prince Uday Singh from Banvir's conspiracy.

    2. Her life embodies the supreme patriotic maxim: व्यक्तिहितं न, राष्ट्रहितम् एव श्रेष्ठम् (National welfare outranks individual self-interest).

    3. The past tense (लङ्-लकारः) takes an initial augment अ- before the root (e.g., अपठत्, अरक्षत्, अभवत्) to narrate historical actions.

    4. In historical narratives, past active participles ending in क्तवतु (e.g., शायितवती, रक्षितवान्) function interchangeably with verbs in ਲङ्-लकार.

    5. सवर्णदीर्घसन्धिः combines two identical vowels into their shared long vowel (e.g., विद्या + अभ्यासः = विद्याभ्यासः; सु + उक्तिः = सूक्तिः).

    अतिरिक्ताध्ययनम् | Additional Learning

    राज्यस्य सप्ताङ्गानि सैन्यव्यूहाः च | Seven Limbs of Statecraft and Battle Formations

The supplementary notes introduce classical Indian statecraft (राजधर्मः) by detailing the seven foundational pillars of a sovereign kingdom: the Sovereign (स्वामी), the Minister (अमात्यः), the Ally (सुहृत्), the Treasury (कोषः), the Nation (राष्ट्रम्), the Fortress (दुर्गम्), and the Army (बलम्). The text also records ancient military tactical formations (सैन्यव्यूहाः) illustrated in classical warfare, including the Circular Array (चक्रव्यूहः), Eagle Formation (गरुडव्यूहः), Crescent Formation (अर्धचन्द्रव्यूहः), and Thunderbolt Array (वज्रव्यूहः).

    1. An enduring nation relies on the simultaneous health and ethical stability of all seven state organs rather than raw military force alone.

    2. Ancient Indian military treatises preserved sophisticated geometric strategies (व्यूहरचनाः) designed to secure defensive and offensive positioning during war.
