(Understanding verse structure through word-splitting and prose order, recognising genders, and noticing case functions)

एकवाक्येन पाठः | The Lesson in One Sentence

अस्मिन् पाठे वयम् अष्ट सुभाषितानि पठित्वा जीवनमूल्यानि (उद्यमः, विद्या, विनयः, उदारता, मातृभूमिभक्तिः च) तथा श्लोकानां पदच्छेद-अन्वय-पद्धतिं शिक्षामहे। (In this lesson, through eight classic Subhashitas, we learn essential life values along with how to split joined words and arrange Sanskrit verses into natural sentence order.)

    SECTION 2 – किं शिक्षिष्यामः? | What Will You Learn?

    • read and understand eight inspiring सुभाषितानि by observing their पदच्छेदः (word separation) and अन्वयः (prose word order)

    • identify the core thoughts on true gems, universal brotherhood (वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्), hard work (उद्यमः), respect for elders, true education, and love for the motherland

    • classify chapter vocabulary accurately into पुंलिङ्गम्, स्त्रीलिङ्गम्, and नपुंसकलिङ्गम्

    • answer direct comprehension questions using case forms such as केन (उद्यमेन) and कस्मात् (विनयात् / धनात् / स्वर्गात्)

    SECTION 3 – मुख्यशब्दाः | Key Vocabulary

    सुभाषितम् | सुन्दरवचनम् (wise / well-spoken saying) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (बहुवचनम्: सुभाषितानि) मूढैः | मूर्खजनैः (by foolish people) | तृतीया-बहुवचनम् निजः – परः | स्वकीयः (one's own) – अन्यः जनः (stranger / other) | पुंलिङ्गम् लघुचेतसाम् | संकुचितहृदयानाम् (of narrow-minded people) | षष्ठी-बहुवचनम् वसुधा | धरित्री / पृथिवी (the earth) | स्त्रीलिङ्गम् कुटुम्बकम् | परिवारः (family) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम् उद्यमः | परिश्रमः (hard work / effort) | उद्यमेन = by hard work मनोरथैः | केवलम् इच्छाभिः (merely by wishes / desires) | तृतीया-बहुवचनम् वृद्धोपसेविनः | वृद्धानां सेवकस्य (of one who serves elders) | षष्ठी-एकवचनम् सहायकृत् | सहायकः (helper) | देवः सहायकृत् भवति पात्रताम् | योग्यताम् (worthiness / capability) | द्वितीया-एकवचनम् आप्नोति | प्राप्तं करोति (attains / gets) | लट्लकारः, एकवचनम् गरीयसी | श्रेष्ठा (greater / nobler) | स्त्रीलिङ्ग-विशेषणम् पुस्तकस्था | पुस्तके स्थिता (remaining only in a book) | स्त्रीलिङ्ग-विशेषणम् परहस्तगतम् | अन्येषां हस्तेषु स्थितम् (gone into others' hands) | नपुंसकलिङ्ग-विशेषणम्

    SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson

    १. वास्तविकानि रत्नानि उदारचरितं च (श्लोकौ १–२) | True Gems and Universal Family

In the classroom, students put up illustrated posters (स्फोरकपत्राणि) on the wall containing सुभाषितानि — beautiful sayings that inspire noble actions (सुन्दरवचनानि एव सुभाषितानि भवन्ति).

    • श्लोकः १: On earth (पृथिव्याम्), there are three real gems (त्रीणि रत्नानि) — जलम् (water), अन्नम् (food), and सुभाषितम् (wise words). Foolish people (मूढाः), however, call mere pieces of stone (पाषाणखण्डेषु) "gems" (रत्नसंज्ञा).

    • श्लोकः २: Counting someone as "mine" or "stranger" (अयं निजः परो वा इति गणना) is the way of narrow-minded people (लघुचेतसाम्). For noble, large-hearted people (उदारचरितानाम्), the entire earth is one family (वसुधा एव कुटुम्बकम्).

    २. उद्यमस्य ज्येष्ठसेवायाः च महत्त्वम् (श्लोकौ ३–४) | Hard Work and Respecting Elders

    • श्लोकः ३: Tasks are accomplished only through hard work (कार्याणि उद्यमेन हि सिद्ध्यन्ति), not merely by wishing (न मनोरथैः). Even though a lion is mighty, deer do not walk into the mouth of a sleeping lion on their own (सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य मुखे मृगाः स्वयं न प्रविशन्ति).

    • श्लोकः ४: For a person who is habitually respectful (अभिवादनशीलस्य) and constantly serves elders (नित्यं वृद्धोपसेविनः), four things naturally increase (चत्वारि वर्धन्ते) — आयुः (longevity), विद्या (knowledge), यशः (fame), and बलम् (strength).

    ३. पौरुषं विद्यायाः फलश्रुतिः च (श्लोकौ ५–६) | Six Virtues of Effort and the Chain of Knowledge

    • श्लोकः ५: Where these six qualities exist together (एते षड् यत्र वर्तन्ते) — उद्यमः (effort), साहसम् (courage), धैर्यम् (patience), बुद्धिः (intellect), शक्तिः (strength), and पराक्रमः (valour) — there even God lends support (तत्र देवः सहायकृत् भवति).

    • श्लोकः ६: Knowledge gives humility (विद्या विनयं ददाति); from humility one attains worthiness (विनयात् पात्रतां याति); from worthiness one earns wealth (पात्रत्वात् धनम् आप्नोति); from wealth one performs righteous duty (धनात् धर्मम्), and from that comes true happiness (ततः सुखम्).

    ४. मातृभूमि-गौरवं व्यावहारिक-ज्ञानं च (श्लोकौ ७–८) | Motherland and Practical Wisdom

    • श्लोकः ७: Shri Rama tells Lakshmana that even golden Lanka does not appeal to him (स्वर्णमयी अपि लङ्का मे न रोचते), because one's mother and motherland are greater even than heaven (जननी जन्मभूमिः च स्वर्गात् अपि गरीयसी).

    • श्लोकः ८: Knowledge that stays locked inside a book (पुस्तकस्था विद्या) and money that is in someone else's hands (परहस्तगतं धनम्) are both useless when the time of real need arrives (कार्यकाले समुत्पन्ने न सा विद्या न तद् धनम्). Only knowledge absorbed in the mind (बुद्धिस्था विद्या) helps in time of need.

    SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

    १. पदच्छेदः अन्वयः च (Splitting Joined Words and Prose Order in Verses)

    रूपम् | Pattern श्लोक-पङ्क्तिः → पदच्छेदः (Separating sandhi) → अन्वयः (Arranging words in natural sentence order)

अर्थः / Use In Sanskrit poetry (श्लोकाः), words are often joined together by sandhi and arranged for musical rhythm. To understand a verse easily, first split the joined words (पदच्छेदः) and then place them in standard subject-object-verb prose order (अन्वयः).

    उदाहरणम् | Example वसुधैव → पदच्छेदः: वसुधा + एव विनयाद्याति → पदच्छेदः: विनयात् + याति पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति → पदच्छेदः: पात्रत्वात् + धनम् + आप्नोति स्वर्गादपि → पदच्छेदः: स्वर्गात् + अपि

स्मरणीयम् | Remember Once you do पदच्छेदः, difficult-looking long words immediately break into familiar simple words.

    २. तृतीया-पञ्चमी-विभक्त्योः कारण-क्रम-बोधः ('केन?' तथा 'कस्मात्?' इति प्रयोगः)

    रूपम् | Pattern तृतीया-विभक्तिः (केन? — By what means?): उद्यमेन, मनोरथैः, मूढैः, धर्मेण पञ्चमी-विभक्तिः (कस्मात्? — From what / Than what?): विनयात्, पात्रत्वात्, धनात्, स्वर्गात्

अर्थः / Use Notice how the verses use उद्यमेन ("by hard work") to show the means of success, and -आत् endings (विनयात्, पात्रत्वात्, धनात्) to show a step-by-step chain where one quality leads to the next, or comparison ("greater than heaven" — स्वर्गात् अपि गरीयसी).

    उदाहरणम् | Example कार्याणि उद्यमेन सिद्ध्यन्ति, मनोरथैः न सिद्ध्यन्ति। (Tasks succeed by effort, not by mere wishes.) विनयात् पात्रतां याति, पात्रत्वात् धनम् आप्नोति। (From humility one attains worthiness; from worthiness one gets wealth.) जननी जन्मभूमिः च स्वर्गात् अपि गरीयसी। (Mother and motherland are greater even than heaven.)

स्मरणीयम् | Remember When a question asks केन? (by what?), answer with the तृतीया form (उद्यमेन); when it asks कस्मात्? (from/than what?), answer with the पञ्चमी form (स्वर्गात् / धनात्).

    ३. प्रथमान्त-पदानां लिङ्ग-विभागः (Gender Classification of Nouns in the Chapter)

    रूपम् | Pattern पुंलिङ्गम् (-अः) | स्त्रीलिङ्गम् (-आ / -ई / -इः) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (-अम्)

अर्थः / Use The chapter groups abstract virtues and concrete nouns by gender so students can use them accurately with pronouns and numbers (such as त्रीणि रत्नानि, एते षड्).

    उदाहरणम् | Example पुंलिङ्गपदानि: उद्यमः, विनयः, पराक्रमः, निजः, देवः, सिंहः स्त्रीलिङ्गपदानि: वसुधा, जननी, विद्या, बुद्धिः, शक्तिः, जन्मभूमिः नपुंसकलिङ्गपदानि: रत्नम्, जलम्, अन्नम्, कुटुम्बकम्, साहसम्, धैर्यम्, धनम्, बलम्, सुखम्

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember Feminine abstract nouns in this lesson end either in -आ/-ई (विद्या, वसुधा, जननी) or in -इः (बुद्धिः, शक्तिः, जन्मभूमिः).

| उद्यमेन, धर्मेण / मनोरथैः, मूढैः | By effort, by dharma / by wishes, by fools पञ्चमी (Source / Comparison) | कस्मात्? | विनयात्, पात्रत्वात्, धनात्, स्वर्गात् | From humility, from wealth, than heaven षष्ठी (Possession) | कस्य / केषाम्? | सिंहस्य, अभिवादनशीलस्य / लघुचेतसाम् | Of the lion, of the respectful / of the narrow-minded सप्तमी (Location) | कुत्र / केषु? | पृथिव्याम्, मुखे / पाषाणखण्डेषु | On earth, in the mouth / in stone pieces

    Observations:

    • Notice the neutral plural numbers used in the verses: त्रीणि रत्नानि (three gems) and चत्वारि वर्धन्ते (four things increase: आयुः, विद्या, यशः, बलम्).

    • In यच्छति / स्वीकरोषि / स्वीकरोमि, the verb changes cleanly across the three persons: वृक्षः फलानि यच्छति (प्रथमपुरुषः), त्वं फलानि स्वीकरोषि (मध्यमपुरुषः), अहं फलानि स्वीकरोमि (उत्तमपुरुषः).

    SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences

    Pattern 1: ददाति – स्वीकरोषि – स्वीकरोमि (Giving and Receiving Across Three Persons)

    [कर्ता १] + [वस्तु] + यच्छति / ददाति। त्वं [वस्तु] स्वीकरोषि। अहं [वस्तु] स्वीकरोमि। Example: वृक्षः फलानि यच्छति। त्वं फलानि स्वीकरोषि। अहं फलानि स्वीकरोमि। (The tree gives fruits. You accept the fruits. I accept the fruits.) वृक्षः छायां यच्छति। त्वं छायां स्वीकरोषि। अहं छायां स्वीकरोमि। (The tree gives shade. You accept shade. I accept shade.) आचार्यः विद्यां ददाति। त्वं विद्यां स्वीकरोषि। अहं विद्यां स्वीकरोमि।

Pattern 2: कारण-कार्य-वाक्यानि (Expressing How Goals Are Achieved)

    ______ हि कार्याणि सिद्ध्यन्ति, न तु ______। Example: उद्यमेन हि कार्याणि सिद्ध्यन्ति, न तु मनोरथैः। (Tasks succeed by hard work, not by mere wishes.) धर्मेण सुखं प्राप्यते। (Happiness is attained through righteous conduct.)

    Pattern 3: 'यत्र ... तत्र ...' वाक्य-रचना (Where There Is X, There Is Y)

    यत्र ______ वर्तते / वर्तन्ते, तत्र ______ भवति। Example: यत्र उद्यमः साहसं धैर्यं च वर्तन्ते, तत्र देवः सहायकृत् भवति। (Where there are effort, courage, and patience, there God is a helper.) यत्र विद्या अस्ति, तत्र विनयः भवति। (Where there is knowledge, there is humility.)

Pattern 4: पञ्चमी-विभक्त्या क्रम-वर्णनम् (Showing What Comes From What)

    [पञ्चमी-रूपम्] + [द्वितीया-रूपम्] + याति / आप्नोति। Example: मनुष्यः विनयात् पात्रतां याति। (From humility, a person attains worthiness.) सः पात्रत्वात् धनम् आप्नोति, धनात् च धर्मम् आप्नोति। (From worthiness he attains wealth, and from wealth he attains dharma.)

    SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding

    प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — कार्याणि केन सिद्ध्यन्ति? (By what are tasks accomplished?) उत्तरम्: उद्यमेन।

    प्रश्नः २. 'आम्' अथवा 'न' इति लिखत — (State Yes or No based on the verses) (क) किं पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलम् अन्नं पाषाणः च सन्ति? (ख) किम् अभिवादनशीलस्य विद्या वर्धते?

    उत्तरम्: (क) न (ख) आम्

    प्रश्नः ३. निर्देशानुसारं पट्टिकातः पदानि चित्वा लिखत — (Pick the words matching the requested gender from: उद्यमः, वसुधा, साहसम्, जननी, विनयः, धनम्) (क) पुंलिङ्गपदे — ______ , ______ (ख) स्त्रीलिङ्गपदे — ______ , ______ (ग) नपुंसकलिङ्गपदे — ______ , ______

    उत्तरम्: (क) पुंलिङ्गपदे — उद्यमः, विनयः (ख) स्त्रीलिङ्गपदे — वसुधा, जननी (ग) नपुंसकलिङ्गपदे — साहसम्, धनम्

    प्रश्नः ४. पूर्णवाक्येन उत्तरत — अभिवादनशीलस्य नित्यं वृद्धोपसेविनः च कानि चत्वारि वर्धन्ते? (Which four things increase for one who is respectful and serves elders daily?)

    उत्तरम्: अभिवादनशीलस्य नित्यं वृद्धोपसेविनः च आयुः, विद्या, यशः, बलं च इति चत्वारि वर्धन्ते।

    SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    १. भोजनसमये जल-अन्न-सम्मानम् (Respecting food and water daily):

Before meals, remember that water and food are true gems of the earth (पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलमन्नं सुभाषितम्) and never waste them.

    २. परीक्षार्थम् अध्ययन-प्रेरणा (Motivating yourself for studies and real learning):

Remind yourself that merely wishing for good marks is not enough — कार्याणि उद्यमेन हि सिद्ध्यन्ति! Also, study to understand deeply in your mind rather than leaving knowledge unread in books (पुस्तकस्था विद्या कार्यकाले न सहायिका, बुद्धिस्था विद्या एव कार्यं साधयति).

    ३. विद्यालयस्य भित्तौ सुभाषित-लेखनम् (Displaying daily wisdom in class):

Write a motto from this chapter on the classroom board every morning:

    • विद्या ददाति विनयम्। (Knowledge imparts humility.)

    • वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्। (The whole earth is one family.)

    • जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी। (Mother and motherland are greater even than heaven.)

    SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember

    1. सुभाषितानि are well-spoken Sanskrit verses drawn from classical texts like चाणक्यनीतिः, मनुस्मृतिः, पञ्चतन्त्रम्, हितोपदेशः, and रामायणम् that guide us toward noble living.

    2. The three true gems on earth are जलम् (water), अन्नम् (food), and सुभाषितम् (wise words), whereas stones are called gems only by the ignorant (मूढैः).

    3. Noble-minded people regard the entire world as one family (उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्), and Shri Rama declares that mother and motherland are superior even to heaven (जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी).

    4. Hard work (उद्यमः) is essential for achieving any goal, and respectful service to elders (अभिवादनशीलस्य वृद्धोपसेविनः) increases four blessings: आयुः, विद्या, यशः, and बलम्.

    5. Splitting sandhi (पदच्छेदः) and arranging words in prose order (अन्वयः) are the two key steps to unlocking the meaning of any Sanskrit verse.
