(Using the second / accusative case across singular, dual, and plural in sentences and understanding the narrative)

एकवाक्येन पाठः | The Lesson in One Sentence

    अस्मिन् पाठे वयं धनिक-भिक्षुक-कथायाः माध्यमेन आलस्यस्य त्याज्यत्वं परिश्रमस्य महत्त्वं च ज्ञात्वा वाक्येषु द्वितीया-विभक्तेः (यथा — ग्रामम्, भिक्षाम्, नदीम्, फलम्) प्रयोगं शिक्षामहे। (In this lesson, through the story of a rich man and a beggar, we learn the importance of giving up laziness for hard work and practise using the second / accusative case in Sanskrit sentences.)

    SECTION 2 – किं शिक्षिष्यामः? | What Will You Learn?

    • understand the story of the strong young beggar and why laziness is our greatest internal enemy (शरीरस्थः महान् रिपुः) while hard work is our true friend (उद्यमसमः बन्धुः)

    • identify and form द्वितीया-विभक्तिः (accusative case) endings across masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns as well as pronouns

    • convert object nouns (द्वितीया-विभक्ति-पदानि) smoothly between singular (एकवचनम्), dual (द्विवचनम्), and plural (बहुवचनम्)

    • construct complete Sanskrit sentences pairing subjects and action verbs with appropriate object forms

    SECTION 3 – मुख्यशब्दाः | Key Vocabulary

    आलस्यम् | अनुत्साहः (laziness) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम् रिपुः | शत्रुः (enemy) | पुंलिङ्गम् दृढकायः | दृढशरीरः (strong-bodied) | पुंलिङ्ग-विशेषणम् भिक्षाटनम् | भिक्षार्थं भ्रमणम् (wandering for alms / begging) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम् प्रभूतम् | पर्याप्तम् / अधिकम् (abundant / a lot of) | यथा — प्रभूतं धनम् शरीराङ्गानि | शरीरस्य अङ्गानि (parts of the body) | नपुंसकलिङ्गम्, बहुवचनम् निराकृतवान् | न स्वीकृतवान् (refused) | भूतकाल-रूपम् दुर्बलम् | बलहीनम् (weak) | द्वितीया-एकवचनम् त्यक्त्वा | त्यागं कृत्वा (having left / given up) | पूर्वकालिक-अव्ययम् नावसीदति | न + अवसीदति — दुःखितः न भवति (does not feel sad / never despairs) | लट्लकारः, एकवचनम् मह्यम् – तुभ्यम् | मम कृते (for/to me) – तव कृते (for/to you) | चतुर्थी-एकवचनम् विना | without | अव्ययपदम् (यथा — विना पादौ, विना वेदम्)

    SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson

    १. माता-पुत्र-संवादः भिक्षुकस्य च परिचयः | The Holiday Dialogue and the Young Beggar

A boy tells his mother that today is a holiday (अवकाशदिनम्) and he wants to rest all day. His mother reminds him that a holiday is from school, not from self-study (अवकाशः विद्यालयस्य अस्ति न तु स्वाध्यायस्य), and tells him a story to show that hard work is our friend while laziness is like an enemy. In a large village lived a beggar (भिक्षुकः). Although he was a tall and strong-bodied youth (उन्नतः दृढकायः च युवकः), he wandered around begging (भिक्षाटनं करोति स्म). Some people gave him money, while others scolded him (केचन च तर्जयन्ति).

    २. धनिकस्य आगमनं विचित्रः प्रस्तावः च | The Rich Man's Unusual Offer

One day, a rich man (धनिकः) came along that road. Hoping to get a lot of money, the beggar said: "आर्य! अहम् अतीव दरिद्रः अस्मि। कृपया दानं करोतु" (Sir! I am very poor. Please give a donation) and asked for abundant wealth (अहं प्रभूतं धनम् इच्छामि). To open the young man's eyes, the wise rich man said:

    • "अहं तुभ्यं सहस्रं रूप्यकाणि यच्छामि। त्वं मह्यं तव पादौ यच्छ।" (I will give you 1,000 rupees. Give me your two feet.) The beggar refused: "विना पादौ कथं वा चलामि?" (How will I walk without feet?)

    • Next, the rich man offered 5,000 rupees (पञ्चसहस्रं रूप्यकाणि) for his two hands (तव हस्तौ यच्छ). Again the beggar refused, asking how he could even receive alms without hands. In this way, the rich man offered thousands of rupees to buy various parts of his body (शरीराङ्गानि क्रेतुम् इष्टवान्), but the beggar refused every time (निराकृतवान्).

    ३. धनिकस्य उपदेशः भिक्षुकस्य परिवर्तनं च | The Awakening and Transformation

The rich man then explained: "Look, friend! Right with you are priceless things worth thousands (तव समीपे एव सहस्राधिकमूल्यकानि वस्तूनि सन्ति). Why then do you consider yourself weak (दुर्बलम्)? By good fortune we have obtained a human birth (मानवजन्म); make an effort for its success!" From that day onward (तस्माद् दिनात्), the young man gave up begging (भिक्षाटनं त्यक्त्वा), earned money through hard work (परिश्रमेण धनार्जनं कृत्वा), and began living with dignity (सगौरवं जीवनयापनम् आरब्धवान्).

    ४. सुभाषित-सारः | The Concluding Subhashita

The story concludes with the famous verse: आलस्यं हि मनुष्याणां शरीरस्थो महान् रिपुः। नास्त्युद्यमसमो बन्धुः कृत्वा यं नावसीदति॥ Laziness is indeed the greatest enemy residing inside a human being's own body (शरीरस्थः महान् रिपुः). There is no friend equal to hard work (उद्यमसमः बन्धुः नास्ति), for after doing hard work (यं कृत्वा), a person never feels sorrow or despair (न अवसीदति).

    SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

    १. द्वितीया-विभक्तेः प्रयोगः (The Second / Accusative Case for the Object of an Action)

    रूपम् | Pattern कर्ता (प्रथमा) + कर्म (द्वितीया-विभक्तिः) + क्रियापदम्

अर्थः / Use The person or thing toward which the subject's action is directed (what someone reads, writes, sees, eats, brings, or where someone goes) takes द्वितीया-विभक्तिः. In singular, almost all nouns take -म् at the end.

    उदाहरणम् | Example भक्तः (देव) नमति → भक्तः देवं नमति। (The devotee bows to God.) रमा (लेखनी) क्रीणाति → रमा लेखनीं क्रीणाति। (Rama buys a pen.) बालिकाः (विद्यालय) गच्छन्ति → बालिकाः विद्यालयं गच्छन्ति। (The girls go to school.)

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember Even the destination of verbs of motion (like गच्छति / गच्छन्ति) takes द्वितीया-विभक्तिः (यथा — विद्यालयं गच्छन्ति, कन्याकुमारीं गच्छति).

    २. लिङ्गानुसारं द्वितीया-विभक्तेः वचन-रूपाणि (Singular, Dual, and Plural Endings in the Second Case)

अर्थः / Use When the object changes from one to two or many, only the द्वितीया-विभक्तिः noun changes its number; the subject and verb do NOT change.

    उदाहरणम् | Example एकवचनात् द्विवचने: चन्द्रशेखरः लेखं लिखति → चन्द्रशेखरः लेखौ लिखति। मातामही कथां श्रावयति → मातामही कथे श्रावयति। एकवचनात् बहुवचने: वयं सुभाषितं वदामः → वयं सुभाषितानि वदामः। अरुणः दूरवाणीं नयति → अरुणः दूरवाणीः नयति।

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember In नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (फलम्, फले, फलानि), the प्रथमा-विभक्तिः and द्वितीया-विभक्तिः forms are 100% identical across all three numbers.

    ३. सर्वनामसु तथा 'विना' योगे द्वितीया-विभक्तिः (Pronouns in the Second Case and Use with विना)

    रूपम् | Pattern अस्मद् (द्वितीया): माम् (me) | आवाम् (us two) | अस्मान् (us all) युष्मद् (द्वितीया): त्वाम् (you) | युवाम् (you two) | युष्मान् (you all) विना + द्वितीया-विभक्तिः (यथा — विना पादौ, विना वेदम्, विना गीताम्)

अर्थः / Use When a pronoun is the object of the verb (e.g., "protects me", "teaches us", "calls you"), we use its द्वितीया form. Also, the word विना (without) is commonly used with द्वितीया-विभक्तिः.

    उदाहरणम् | Example सैनिकः मां रक्षति → द्विवचने: सैनिकः आवां रक्षति। अग्रजा त्वाम् आह्वयति → बहुवचने: अग्रजा युष्मान् आह्वयति। विना पादौ कथं वा चलामि? / विना वेदं विना गीतां... भारतं भारतं न हि।

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember Be careful not to confuse अहम् (I — subject) with माम् (me — object), or त्वम् (you — subject) with त्वाम् (you — object).

    Observations:

    • In द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्, masculine words end in -आन् (ग्रामान्, बालकान्, पादान्), आकारान्त feminine words end in -आः (मालाः, पत्रिकाः), and ईकारान्त feminine words end in -ईः with a विसर्गः (नदीः, लेखनीः, सम्मार्जनीः).

    • In द्विवचनम्, प्रथमा and द्वितीया forms are identical for all nouns (बालकौ, बालिके, लेखन्यौ, फले).

    SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences

Pattern 1: द्वितीया-विभक्ति-एकवचनेन वाक्य-रचना (Using Singular Object Forms)

    [कर्ता] + [कर्म-एकवचनम् (-म्)] + [क्रियापदम्]। Example: छात्राः ग्रन्थं पठन्ति। (Students read a book.) बालकाः कथां लिखन्ति। (Boys write a story.) कृषकः क्षेत्रं कर्षति। (The farmer ploughs the field.) पक्षिणः फलं खादन्ति। (Birds eat fruit.)

Pattern 2: द्वितीया-विभक्तौ द्विवचने परिवर्तनम् (Changing the Object from One to Two)

    [कर्ता] + [द्वितीया-एकवचनम्] + [क्रिया] → [कर्ता] + [द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्] + [क्रिया]। Example: आपणिकः अङ्कनीं ददाति → आपणिकः अङ्कन्यौ ददाति। (The shopkeeper gives two pencils.) कृष्णः कन्दुकं गृह्णाति → कृष्णः कन्दुकौ गृह्णाति। (Krishna catches two balls.) त्वं मह्यं तव पादौ हस्तौ च यच्छ। (Give me your two feet and two hands.)

Pattern 3: द्वितीया-विभक्तौ बहुवचने परिवर्तनम् (Changing the Object from One to Many)

    [कर्ता] + [द्वितीया-एकवचनम्] + [क्रिया] → [कर्ता] + [द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्] + [क्रिया]। Example: मातामहः मां बोधयति → मातामहः अस्मान् बोधयति। (Grandfather teaches us.) छात्रः श्लोकं पठति → छात्रः श्लोकान् पठति। (The student reads verses.) बालिकाः सङ्गणकं पश्यन्ति → बालिकाः सङ्गणकानि पश्यन्ति। (The girls look at the computers.)

Pattern 4: पूर्वकालिक-क्रियया (क्त्वा) सह द्वितीया-विभक्तिः (Doing One Action and Then Another)

    [कर्म १ (द्वितीया)] + त्यक्त्वा / कृत्वा + [कर्म २] + करोति / आरब्धवान्। Example: भिक्षुकः भिक्षाटनं त्यक्त्वा परिश्रमं करोति। (Giving up begging, the beggar does hard work.) मनुष्यः उद्यमं कृत्वा कदापि न अवसीदति। (Having done hard work, a person never despairs.)

    SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding

    प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — भिक्षुकः धनिकात् किम् इच्छति? (What does the beggar want from the rich man?) उत्तरम्: धनम् (प्रभूतं धनम्)।

    प्रश्नः २. 'आम्' अथवा 'न' इति लिखत — (State Yes or No based on the story) (क) भिक्षुकः उन्नतः दृढकायः च आसीत्। (ख) भिक्षुकः धनिकाय पादौ ददाति। उत्तरम्: (क) आम् (ख) न

    प्रश्नः ३. कोष्ठकगत-शब्दस्य उचितं द्वितीया-विभक्ति-रूपं लिखत — (Write the correct accusative singular form of the word in brackets) (क) अर्जुनः ______ पश्यति। (नदी) (ख) शिक्षकः ______ पाठयति। (अस्मद् — एकवचने) उत्तरम्: (क) नदीम् (ख) माम्

    प्रश्नः ४. रेखांकितपदं बहुवचने परिवर्त्य वाक्यं पुनः लिखत — 'जननी पाकं पचति।' (Change the object 'पाकम्' into plural and rewrite the sentence) उत्तरम्: जननी पाकान् पचति।

    SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    १. अवकाशदिने स्वाध्याय-सङ्कल्पः (Avoiding laziness on holidays):

    Whenever you feel lazy about studying on a holiday, remind yourself in Sanskrit: अवकाशः विद्यालयस्य अस्ति, न तु स्वाध्यायस्य! अहम् आलस्यं त्यजामि, परिश्रमं करोमि।

    २. विद्यालये क्रीडाङ्गणे च दृश्य-वर्णनम् (Describing school activities using द्वितीया-विभक्तिः):

    Look around your school and form simple sentences with object nouns: बालकाः कन्दुकं क्षिपन्ति। छात्राः योगासनं कुर्वन्ति। बालिकाः विमानं रचयन्ति। शिक्षिका सङ्गणकं दर्शयति।

    ३. दैनन्दिन-कार्य-कथनम् (Describing what you use or do in your daily routine):

    अहं प्रातः जलं पिबामि, दन्तकूर्चं धरामि, स्यूतं नयामि, विद्यालयं गच्छामि, पाठं च पठामि।

    SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember

    1. The story of the rich man and the strong young beggar teaches us that our healthy hands, feet, and body are priceless treasures meant for dignified hard work, not laziness.

    2. The Subhashita declares that laziness (आलस्यम्) is our greatest enemy living inside our own body, while hard work (उद्यमः) is our greatest friend because one who works hard never despairs (कृत्वा यं नावसीदति).

    3. द्वितीया-विभक्तिः marks the direct object of a verb (what is read, written, seen, eaten, or taken) as well as the destination of going (विद्यालयं गच्छति).

    4. In द्वितीया-विभक्तिः, masculine forms are बालकम् – बालकौ – बालकान्, आकारान्त feminine forms are मालााम् – माले – मालाः, ईकारान्त feminine forms are नदीम् – नद्यौ – नदीः, and neuter forms are फलम् – फले – फलानि.

    5. Object forms of the personal pronouns are माम् – आवाम् – अस्मान् (me / us) and त्वाम् – युवाम् – युष्मान् (you).
