The poem 'Comparisons' is written by an anonymous poet (Author Unknown). Since the author is unknown, the poem represents a universal observation of the natural world and everyday objects. The poet relies heavily on similes to highlight the vast diversity and contrasting nature of the world around us. The simple, rhythmic style makes it universally relatable for young readers learning about descriptive language and opposites.

    मराठी टीप: या कवितेचे कवी अज्ञात (Anonymous) आहेत. या कवितेत जगातील विविध गोष्टींमधील विरोधाभास (opposites) आणि विविधता 'Simile' (उपमा) या अलंकाराच्या माध्यमातून अतिशय सोप्या शब्दांत मांडली आहे.

Exam Tip: Poet introduction may be asked as part of Poem Appreciation (5 marks) or as a short answer (2 marks).

    Stanza 2

Fierce as a tiger, gentle as a lamb. Sour as a lemon, sweet as jam.

    Stanza 3

Dry as the desert, wet as the sea. Square as a house, round as a pea.

    Stanza 4

Cool as a cave, warm as toast, Noisy as a road drill, quiet as a ghost.

    Stanza 5

Strong as an ox, weak as kitten. Hard as a rock, soft as a mitten.

    Stanza 6

Dark as a tunnel, light as the moon, Night time midnight, day time noon.

    Stanza 7

Tall as a giant, short as an elf. Crooked as a mountain path, straight as a shelf...

    Stanza 8

The world is full of opposites, so think of some yourself!

    SECTION 4 — Stanza-wise Meaning / कडव्यांचा अर्थ

    Stanza 1

Fast as a spaceship, slow as a snail, Big as a dinosaur, small as a nail,
    • English Meaning: The poet compares the extreme speeds and sizes found in our world. Speed is compared using a fast spaceship and a very slow snail. Size is compared using a gigantic dinosaur and a tiny nail.

    • मराठी अर्थ: या कडव्यात वेगाची तुलना वेगवान अंतराळयान आणि संथ गोगलगायीशी केली आहे, तर आकाराची तुलना महाकाय डायनासोर आणि लहानशा खिळ्याशी केली आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Questions about adjectives of speed and size are often framed from this stanza.

    Stanza 2

Fierce as a tiger, gentle as a lamb. Sour as a lemon, sweet as jam.
    • English Meaning: The poet contrasts behavior and taste. A tiger represents fierce behavior, while a lamb represents gentleness. For taste, the sharp sourness of a lemon is contrasted with the sugary sweetness of jam.

    • मराठी अर्थ: येथे स्वभावाची (वाघासारखा हिंस्र आणि मेंढीसारखा शांत) आणि चवीची (लिंबासारखी आंबट आणि जॅमसारखी गोड) तुलना केली आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Identify the animals and foods used to show opposite characteristics.

    Stanza 3

Dry as the desert, wet as the sea. Square as a house, round as a pea.
    • English Meaning: This stanza focuses on physical states and shapes. The dryness of a desert is opposite to the wetness of the sea. Similarly, the square shape of a house is compared to the round shape of a tiny pea.

    • मराठी अर्थ: वाळवंटाची कोरडेपणा आणि समुद्राचा ओलावा यांची तुलना केली आहे; तसेच घराचा चौकोनी आकार आणि वाटाण्याचा गोल आकार यातील फरक सांगितला आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Perfect for testing opposite physical properties and shapes.

    Stanza 4

Cool as a cave, warm as toast, Noisy as a road drill, quiet as a ghost.
    • English Meaning: The poet highlights temperature and sound. The cool interior of a cave is contrasted with a warm piece of toast. Sound is compared using a deafening road drill against the absolute silence of a ghost.

    • मराठी अर्थ: गुहेतील थंडावा आणि टोस्टची उब यांची तुलना; तसेच रस्त्यावरील ड्रिलचा मोठा आवाज आणि भूताची शांतता यातील विरोधाभास दाखवला आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Note the adjectives used for temperature (cool/warm) and noise levels.

    Stanza 5

Strong as an ox, weak as kitten. Hard as a rock, soft as a mitten.
    • English Meaning: This stanza describes physical strength and texture. The immense strength of an ox is opposite to the weakness of a baby kitten. The hardness of a rock is contrasted with the softness of a woolen mitten.

    • मराठी अर्थ: बैलाची ताकद आणि मांजराच्या पिल्लाचा दुबळेपणा; तसेच खडकाचा कडकपणा आणि लोकरीच्या मोज्याची (mitten) मऊपणा यांची तुलना केली आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Frequently used to test matching adjectives to the correct nouns.

    Stanza 6

Dark as a tunnel, light as the moon, Night time midnight, day time noon.
    • English Meaning: The poet brings attention to light and time. A tunnel represents deep darkness, while the moon represents brightness. The ultimate extremes of a day are shown through midnight and noon.

    • मराठी अर्थ: बोगद्याचा अंधार आणि चंद्राचा प्रकाश यांची तुलना केली आहे; तसेच मध्यरात्र आणि भर दुपारी या वेळेतील टोकाचा फरक सांगितला आहे.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): Crucial stanza for understanding how the poet uses time to show opposites.

    Stanza 7 & 8

Tall as a giant, short as an elf. Crooked as a mountain path, straight as a shelf... The world is full of opposites, so think of some yourself!
    • English Meaning: The poet compares height (a giant vs. an elf) and paths (a crooked mountain trail vs. a straight shelf). Finally, the poet concludes by stating that our world is completely filled with such opposites and challenges the reader to imagine more of them.

    • मराठी अर्थ: राक्षसाची उंची आणि एल्फचा (परीकथेतील बुटका जीव) खुजेपणा; तसेच डोंगराळ वळणदार रस्ता आणि सरळ कपाट यांची तुलना केली आहे. शेवटी कवी म्हणतो की जग अशाच विरोधाभासांनी भरले आहे, तुम्हीही असे काही नवीन शब्द शोधा.

    • Exam Tip (1 line): The central message and title justification are derived from these concluding lines.

    SECTION 5 — Poetic Devices / काव्यात्मक उपकरणे

    Device / उपकरण

    Example from poem

    Effect in English

    मराठी स्पष्टीकरण

    Simile (उपमा)

    "Fast as a spaceship"

Directly compares the speed of something to a spaceship using the word 'as'.

    'as' या शब्दाचा वापर करून एखाद्या गोष्टीच्या वेगाची तुलना थेट अंतराळयानाशी केली आहे.

    Antithesis (विरोधाभास)

"Fast as a spaceship, slow as a snail"

Places two completely opposite ideas (fast and slow) side by side for strong contrast.

    दोन पूर्णपणे विरुद्ध संकल्पना (वेगवान आणि संथ) एकत्र मांडल्या आहेत.

    Alliteration (अनुप्रास)

    "slow as a snail"

The soothing consonant sound 's' is repeated to create a poetic rhythm.

    SECTION 7 [POETRY] — Poem Appreciation / कविता कौतुक

    Model Poem Appreciation (5 Marks)

The poem 'Comparisons' is written by an anonymous poet (Author Unknown).

The title clearly suggests that the entire poem will be about observing and comparing different elements of the world using similes.

The poem is structured as a list of comparisons. While printed continuously, it can be broken down into stanzas of four lines each.

RHYME SCHEME: The rhyme scheme of the poem is abcb for each four-line stanza. For instance, in the first stanza, the word 'snail' (line 2) rhymes perfectly with 'nail' (line 4).

    FIGURES OF SPEECH:

    1. Simile: The poet uses Simile extensively, for example in "Fast as a spaceship". Here, a direct comparison is made using the word 'as'.

    2. Antithesis: The poet uses Antithesis in the line "Fierce as a tiger, gentle as a lamb." Two completely opposite ideas are placed together for a striking contrasting effect.

    3. Alliteration: The poet uses Alliteration in the phrase "slow as a snail". The consonant sound of the letter 's' is repeated to create a musical quality.

THEME: The central theme of the poem is the immense diversity and the presence of opposites in the world. The poet brilliantly describes how contrasting elements like hot and cold, big and small, or fast and slow exist together, making the world fascinating.

    FAVOURITE LINES:

My favourite lines from the poem are:

"The world is full of opposites, so think of some yourself!"

I like these lines because they do not just end the poem; they directly invite the reader to use their own imagination, look around, and find new comparisons in everyday life.

    मराठी टीप — कविता कौतुक कसे लिहावे:

    • Rhyme Scheme: abcb म्हणजे दुसऱ्या व चौथ्या ओळीचे शब्द जुळतात.

    • Figures of Speech: निदान ३ — नाव + ओळ + स्पष्टीकरण लिहिणे आवश्यक आहे.

    • Favourite Lines: आवडीच्या २-३ ओळी लिहून त्या का आवडल्या याचे कारण २-३ सोप्या इंग्रजी वाक्यांत स्पष्ट करावे.

    • Answer: The poet contrasts light by placing the darkness of a tunnel against the brightness of the moon. For time, the darkest hour of the night (midnight) is set opposite to the brightest hour of the day (noon).

    • मराठी टीप: बोगद्याचा अंधार विरुद्ध चंद्राचा प्रकाश, आणि मध्यरात्र विरुद्ध दुपार, हा वेळेचा आणि प्रकाशाचा फरक सांगा.

    Q.(B)(ii) — Answer in 3-4 sentences: (2 marks)

    • Question: What is the central message given in the last two lines?

    • Answer: In the final two lines, the poet states that our entire world is constructed out of opposites. Instead of just reading the poem, the poet encourages the readers to look around their own environment, use their imagination, and discover new contrasting pairs themselves.

    • मराठी टीप: जग विरोधाभासांनी भरले आहे हे सांगून कवी वाचकांना स्वतःच्या कल्पकतेने असे नवीन शब्द शोधण्याचे आवाहन करत आहे.

    SECTION 9 — Short Answer Questions / लघु उत्तरे

Q1. Identify any two similes from the poem that describe texture or touch, and explain them.

    • Answer: Two similes describing texture are "Hard as a rock" and "soft as a mitten". The poet compares something extremely solid and unbreakable to a rock, while something extremely gentle, warm, and comfortable to touch is compared to a woolen winter mitten.

    • मराठी टीप: खडकाचा कडकपणा आणि लोकरीच्या मोज्याची (mitten) मऊपणा सांगणाऱ्या दोन उपमा (similes) ओळखून त्यांचा अर्थ लिहा.

Q2. Why do you think the poet chose a 'spaceship' and a 'dinosaur' in the very first stanza?

    • Answer: The poet likely chose a 'spaceship' and a 'dinosaur' because they are fascinating, larger-than-life concepts that instantly capture a reader's imagination. A spaceship perfectly represents ultimate, modern speed, while a dinosaur universally represents ancient, immense size, making the concepts of "fast" and "big" very easy to understand.

    • मराठी टीप: अंतराळयान (spaceship) आणि डायनासोर या गोष्टी वाचकांचे लगेच लक्ष वेधून घेतात आणि 'वेग' व 'आकार' समजायला सोपे करतात, हे सांगा.

Q3. What figure of speech is used in the title "Comparisons", and how is it reflected in the poem?

    • Answer: The entire poem is built on the figure of speech called 'Simile' to make "Comparisons". Every single line uses the word 'as' to compare a specific adjective (like cool, tall, strong) with an object or animal that best represents that quality (like a cave, a giant, an ox).

    • मराठी टीप: कवितेत 'as' चा वापर करून प्रत्येक ओळीत दोन वेगवेगळ्या गोष्टींची तुलना (Simile) कशी केली आहे, हे स्पष्ट करावे.

Q4. "The world is full of opposites" — Do you agree? Give one example of your own.

    • Answer: Yes, I completely agree that the world is beautifully balanced by opposites. Without darkness, we wouldn't appreciate light, and without sadness, we wouldn't value happiness. One example of my own comparison is: "Hot as the summer sun, freezing as winter ice."

    • मराठी टीप: या विधानाशी सहमती दर्शवून, निसर्गातील समतोल कसा राखला जातो ते सांगा आणि स्वतःचे एक उपमेचे (simile) उदाहरण द्या.

    SECTION 10 — Long Answer Questions / दीर्घ उत्तरे

Q1. Discuss how the poet uses animals and everyday objects to explain complex concepts of physical properties in the poem 'Comparisons'.

    • Answer: In the poem 'Comparisons', the anonymous poet brilliantly simplifies the understanding of physical properties by pairing them with universally recognized animals and everyday objects. To explain abstract or extreme qualities, the poet relies heavily on the literary device of simile. For example, the concept of extreme physical strength is attached to an 'ox', while ultimate fragility is compared to a 'kitten'. To explain shapes, the poet uses a 'house' for square and a 'pea' for round. Temperature is visualized through the coolness of a 'cave' and the warmth of everyday 'toast'. By linking these opposing adjectives to tangible, familiar things, the poet makes it incredibly easy for readers to visualize the extremes of nature and appreciate the contrasting balance of the world.

    • मराठी टीप:

Q2. Write a detailed Poem Appreciation for 'Comparisons'. Include the theme, rhyme scheme, and your personal opinion on the poet's final message.

    • Answer: The poem 'Comparisons' is an insightful piece written by an anonymous poet. The poem explores the central theme of diversity and the existence of extreme opposites in our natural and physical world. Structurally, it is written in a simple, rhythmic manner with a consistent rhyme scheme of 'abcb' in almost all its stanzas, such as matching 'moon' with 'noon' and 'elf' with 'shelf'. The poet predominantly uses the figures of speech 'Simile' (e.g., "Tall as a giant") and 'Antithesis' (contrasting giant with elf) to drive the point home. My personal favorite aspect of the poem is the final message: "The world is full of opposites, so think of some yourself!". I firmly believe this is a brilliant ending because it transforms the poem from a simple reading exercise into an interactive challenge, urging us to observe our surroundings closely and appreciate the beautiful, contrasting balance of life.

    • मराठी टीप:
