Parent involvement in education is crucial. No matter their income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores. The more comprehensive and well planned the partnership between school and home, the higher the student achievement, according to a report by the Department of Education.
The learning process starts from infancy. It is rightly said that it takes a village to raise a child. A home is the first school of a child. The qualities a child will possess will come from imitating the family members the child has spent most of his / her time with. It could be grandparents, caretakers and parents.
The learning process of each child is different. It is however the responsibility of the school of providing an environment which would cater to the child’s needs. The parents also need to be equally invested in the child’s education and learning process. Attending the Parent Teacher Meetings (PTMs), having transparency while communicating with the child, involving the child in the decision-making process when the child comes of age, accepting and loving the child irrespective of the choices the child makes, are all a part of good parenting techniques.
Having a planned approach towards a child’s learning is always a good practice. When a child has a Learning Disability or has special needs which need to be catered to, a school counselor and partnerships of schools with NGOs is often the best practice. The parents are counseled and psychometric evaluation of the child is done. Plans are offered based on the ability and age of the child. Classroom aids, speech therapy are the most commonly used therapies for special education children. Parents can also join support groups if required.
Teachers in schools and parents in homes use punishment as one of the most important tool for controlling student’s behavior and discipline. One of the main goals of punishment is to invoke fear in the student, so that the behavior does not occur again. In the school, teachers punish students for being late to school, for not following the school rules, for not doing classroom assignment and for failure to perform better in tests and examinations and the like. Study time should be made as interesting as possible for the child. Gamification, storytelling, use of audio-visual tools are some of the ways through which study time can be made fun and interesting for the child. Reading to the child will be of tremendous help. Reading helps children develop their imagination and creativity. Nothing else can help your child develop his personality holistically as much as reading. The child’s curiosity needs to be awakened. Watching age-appropriate intriguing movies with your child and having a discussion over it is one of the ways to invoke curiosity in a child.
Holistic education is a relatively new movement in education that seeks to engage all aspects of the child’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Social – emotional learning, extra –curricular activities, community service should all be given equal importance as that of academics.
Parenting isn’t an easy task. Spending time with the child and creating a safe space for the child is important. Listening to the child when he / she is trying to tell you something will help to create that bond and a safe space for the child.
