Noun Number – Singular & Plural

    • 10 min read

Section 1 – What is Noun Number and Why Should You Care?

Have you ever found yourself confused between saying "The police is coming" or "The police are coming"? Or perhaps you've written "sceneries" in an essay, thinking it’s the plural of scenery? These are the silent "score-killers" in competitive exams. Noun Number is the grammatical property that tells us whether a noun refers to just one item (Singular) or more than one item (Plural).

Understanding how a noun changes its form to show "how many" is crucial, as it directly dictates which verb you must use. If you get the number wrong, your entire sentence's subject-verb agreement collapses. In exams like SSC, Banking, and UPSC, examiners specifically target words that don't follow the "add an -s" rule.

Across major competitive exams, Noun Number questions are worth 2–5 marks. Whether it is a direct error spotting question in SSC CGL or a complex reading comprehension passage in CAT, knowing your singulars from your plurals is a non-negotiable skill.

Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown

    1. Basic & Irregular Plurals

Most nouns are simple – you add 's' or 'es'. However, "Irregular Nouns" change their internal vowels or take completely different forms.

    ज़्यादातर शब्दों के पीछे 's' लगाकर हम उन्हें बहुवचन बना देते हैं। लेकिन कुछ शब्द 'जिद्दी' होते हैं; वे नियम नहीं मानते और अपने अंदर के अक्षरों को बदल लेते हैं, जैसे tooth (एक दाँत) बन जाता है teeth (ज़्यादा दाँत)।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Check the ending: nouns ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z take '-es'.

    1. शब्द का अंत देखें। अगर -s, -sh, -ch, -x, या -z है, तो प्लुरल में '-es' लगाएं।

    2. For consonant + 'y', drop 'y' and add '-ies' (e.g., city – cities).

    2. अगर व्यंजन (consonant) के बाद 'y' है, तो 'y' हटाकर '-ies' लगाएं।

    3. Identify vowel changers (man – men, foot – feet) and do not add 's'.

    3. जिन शब्दों के अंदर के स्वर बदलते हैं, उन्हें रट लें। उनमें 's' न जोड़ें।

    thief, knife

    thieves, knives

    Irregular Vowel

    woman, mouse

    women, mice

    Irregular Form

    child, person

    children, people

The #1 Exam Rule: Never add 's' to an irregular plural that is already plural (e.g., "childrens" or "mens" is always wrong).

    2. Foreign Plurals (Latin & Greek)

Academic and scientific words often keep their original endings from Latin or Greek instead of using the English 's'.

    इंग्लिश ने पुरानी भाषाओं से कई शब्द लिए हैं जो 's' वाला नियम नहीं मानते। जैसे 'bacterium' (एक) का प्लुरल 'bacteria' (बहुत सारे) होता है।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Words ending in '-um' or '-on' usually change to '-a' in plural.

    1. '-um' या '-on' पर खत्म होने वाले शब्द प्लुरल में '-a' हो जाते हैं।

    2. Change '-is' to '-es' for words like crisis or thesis.

    2. '-is' पर खत्म होने वाले शब्दों में 'i' को 'e' में बदल दें।

    3. Check for plural endings in the text to decide the verb (e.g., data are).

    3. वाक्य में शब्द का अंत देखें। अगर 'data' है, तो वह प्लुरल है और 'are' लेगा।

    Quick Examples Table

    Singular

    Plural

    -um to -a

    datum, medium

    data, media

    -on to -a

    criteria, phenomena

    -is to -es

    crisis, thesis

    crises, theses

    -us to -i

    fungus, syllabus

    fungi, syllabi

The #1 Exam Rule: Words like 'criteria' and 'phenomena' are strictly plural; never say "a criteria" (use "a criterion").

    3. Nouns Always Singular (Uncountables)

These nouns represent mass concepts or whole categories. They never take an 's' and always take a singular verb.

    कुछ शब्द हमेशा सिंगुलर ही रहते हैं क्योंकि उन्हें गिना नहीं जा सकता (जैसे पानी, सलाह)। चूँकि ये सिंगुलर हैं, इनके साथ हमेशा 'is', 'was' या 'has' लगता है।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Use the number test: "two luggages" sounds wrong because it's uncountable.

    1. नंबर टेस्ट करें: शब्द के आगे 'दो' लगाकर देखें। अगर अटपटा लगे, तो वह सिंगुलर है।

    2. Identify category words like furniture, scenery, or equipment.

    2. पूरी कैटेगरी को दर्शाने वाले शब्द (furniture, equipment) हमेशा सिंगुलर होते हैं।

    3. Spot subjects ending in 's' (Physics) as single concepts.

    3. विषयों के नाम खोजें जिनमें 's' लगा हो; ये एक ही चीज़ का नाम हैं।

    The scenery is beautiful.

    Subjects

    Physics, Mathematics

    Physics is my favorite.

    Others

    News, innings, summons

    This news is fake.

The #1 Exam Rule: Never use 'a', 'an', or 's' with nouns like scenery, furniture, or advice.

    4. Nouns Always Plural

This includes group names (Police) or items with two parts (Scissors, Trousers).

    कुछ शब्दों में 's' नहीं होता फिर भी वे प्लुरल होते हैं (जैसे Police), और कुछ चीज़ें जिनके दो हिस्से होते हैं (जैसे कैंची, चश्मा) उन्हें हमेशा प्लुरल माना जाता है।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Look for groups of people/animals without an 's' (cattle, police).

    1. लोगों या जानवरों के ऐसे समूह खोजें जिनके अंत में 's' न हो।

    2. Look for tools or clothes with two identical joined parts.

    2. ऐसे औज़ार या कपड़े देखें जिनके दो बराबर हिस्से जुड़े हों।

    3. Ensure the verb that follows is plural (are, were, have).

    3. पक्का करें कि इन शब्दों के बाद हमेशा प्लुरल वर्ब ही आए।

    Specific

    alms, surroundings

Alms were given to the poor.

The #1 Exam Rule: Never add 's' to group nouns like 'cattles' or 'polices' – they are already plural.

    5. Identical Singular and Plural Forms

These nouns never change their spelling. You can only tell the number by the context (article or verb).

    कुछ शब्द बिल्कुल नहीं बदलते। एक भेड़ को भी 'sheep' कहेंगे और दस को भी 'sheep'। 'Sheeps' जैसा कोई शब्द नहीं होता।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Memorize the specific animal/concept list (sheep, deer, aircraft).

    1. Sheep, deer, aircraft जैसे शब्दों की लिस्ट रट लें।

    2. Check the article: "a deer" (singular) vs "many deer" (plural).

    2. आर्टिकल्स देखें। "a deer" मतलब एक, "many deer" मतलब बहुत।

    3. Check the verb: "The sheep is..." (1) vs "The sheep are..." (1+).

    3. वर्ब देखें। 'is' मतलब एक भेड़, 'are' मतलब कई सारी।

    There are many species.

The #1 Exam Rule: "Sheeps", "deers", and "aircrafts" are strictly incorrect in competitive exams.

    6. Compound Nouns & Numerical Adjectives

In compound nouns, the 's' goes on the root word. In numerical adjectives, the hyphenated noun must be singular.

    Brother-in-law जैसे शब्दों में मुख्य शब्द (Brother) को प्लुरल बनाते हैं। साथ ही, 5-star hotel जैसे शब्दों में हाइफन के बाद वाला नाउन हमेशा सिंगुलर रहता है।

    How to Identify (English)

    कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi)

    1. Find the "head" noun (e.g., 'commander' in commander-in-chief).

    1. कंपाउंड नाउन में 'मुख्य शब्द' को पहचानें।

    2. Add 's' ONLY to that head noun (commanders-in-chief).

    2. प्लुरल बनाने के लिए सिर्फ उसी मुख्य शब्द में 's' लगाएं।

    3. In "Number-Noun-Main Noun" patterns, keep the middle noun singular.

    3. नंबर + हाइफन + नाउन वाले पैटर्न में बीच वाला नाउन सिंगुलर रखें।

    Quick Examples Table

The #1 Exam Rule: If a specific number (two, ten) comes before dozen/hundred/thousand, do NOT add 's' (e.g., "two dozen bananas").

Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)

These are the exact mistakes examiners set every year to catch you off guard.

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "He gave me many advices." Correct answer: He gave me much advice (or many pieces of advice). Rule: 'Advice' is uncountable; it cannot take 's' or 'many'.

Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS Clerk [VERIFY]

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "The cattles are grazing."

Correct answer: The cattle are grazing.

Rule: 'Cattle' is already plural. Adding an 's' is a double-plural error.

Seen in: SSC CHSL, NDA [VERIFY]

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "The sceneries of Kashmir are beautiful."

Correct answer: The scenery of Kashmir is beautiful.

Rule: 'Scenery' has no plural form and always takes a singular verb.

Seen in: SSC CGL, MPSC [VERIFY]

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "I have two sister-in-laws."

Correct answer: I have two sisters-in-law.

Rule: Add 's' to the root word (sister), not the legal relationship (law).

Seen in: SSC MTS, CLAT [VERIFY]

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "He ran a five-miles race."

Correct answer: He ran a five-mile race.

Rule: Nouns acting as adjectives in hyphenated phrases must be singular.

Seen in: CDS, IBPS PO [VERIFY]

⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "My spectacles is lost."

Correct answer: My spectacles are lost. .

Rule: Items with two identical halves (spectacles, scissors) are always plural.

Seen in: IBPS Clerk, LIC AAO [VERIFY]

Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Q1. The beautiful (a) / surrounding of the place (b) / enchanted me. (c) / No error (d) [SSC Style] [Medium]

    Correct: b

    Explanation (English): The noun form required here is "surroundings," which is always plural. "Surrounding" is an adjective, not a noun. गलती (b) में है। हम "आसपास" की बात कर रहे हैं, जिसे इंग्लिश में हमेशा 'surroundings' (प्लुरल) कहा जाता है। 'Surrounding' बिना 's' के सिर्फ एक एडजेक्टिव होता है। Rule tested: Nouns always used in plural form (Section 02, Sub-topic 4)

Q2. The fleet of ships (a) / were caught in a (b) / terrible storm. (c) / No error (d) [Banking Style] [Medium]

    Correct: b

Explanation (English): "Fleet" is a singular collective noun. The verb must agree with 'fleet' (was), not 'ships' (were).

    गलती (b) में है। यहाँ असली सब्जेक्ट 'fleet' (जहाजों का बेड़ा) है, जो कि एक है। इसलिए 'were' की जगह सिंगुलर 'was' आएगा।

Rule tested: Collective nouns taking singular verbs (Section 02, Sub-topic 3)

Q3. The peasantry has always played a crucial role. [UPSC CSAT Style] [Hard] a) The peasantry have always played b) The peasantries has always played

    Correct: a

Explanation (English): 'Peasantry' refers to the farmer class and is always grammatically plural. It requires the plural verb 'have'.

    सही जवाब (a) है। 'Peasantry' हमेशा प्लुरल माना जाता है, जैसे 'Police'। इसलिए इसके साथ 'has' नहीं, 'have' लगेगा।

Rule tested: Nouns always plural (Section 02, Sub-topic 4)

Q4. She was known for her _____ and kindness. [CAT Style] [Medium] a) humilities b) humility c) humble

    Correct: b

Explanation (English): "Humility" is an abstract noun and is uncountable. It cannot be pluralized as "humilities".

    सही जवाब 'humility' है। विनम्रता एक भाव है जिसे गिना नहीं जा सकता, इसलिए इसका बहुवचन नहीं बनता।

Rule tested: Abstract nouns are uncountable (Section 02, Sub-topic 3)

Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make

    ERROR TYPE: Pluralizing Uncountable Nouns

Wrong: He gave me some good advices.

Correct: He gave me some good advice.

Why: 'Advice' is uncountable and never takes an 's'.

    Hindi: हिंदी में हम 'सलाहें' बोलते हैं, पर इंग्लिश में advice को गिना नहीं जा सकता। 'Advices' लिखना भारी गलती है।

Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS Clerk

ERROR TYPE: Adding 's' to "Always Plural" Nouns

    Wrong: The cattles are grazing.

    Correct: The cattle are grazing.

Why: 'Cattle' is already plural. Adding an 's' is like saying "childrens".

    Hindi: Cattle शब्द अपने आप में ही बहुवचन है। इसमें 's' लगाना गलत है।

    Seen in: NDA, SSC MTS

    ERROR TYPE: Pluralizing Numerical Adjectives

Wrong: He ran a five-miles race.

Correct: He ran a five-mile race.

Why: Hyphenated nouns describing another noun (race) must be singular.

    यहाँ 'five-mile' एक विशेषता (adjective) बता रहा है। एडजेक्टिव का कभी प्लुरल नहीं बनता।

    Seen in: CAT, SSC CHSL

    ERROR TYPE: Custom vs Customs

Wrong: I had to pay custom duty at the airport.

Correct: I had to pay customs duty at the airport.

    Why: 'Custom' means a habit; 'Customs' means tax on imported goods. Hindi: 'Custom' का मतलब रीति-रिवाज़ होता है। एयरपोर्ट वाले टैक्स को हमेशा 'Customs' कहते हैं

    Seen in: IBPS PO, CLAT

Section 6 – Previous Year Questions – Test Yourself

These questions have actually appeared in competitive exams. Try each one before reading the answer.

    1. The sceneries of Kashmir (a) / is very charming (b). [[SSC CGL] [VERIFY]

Answer: a Explanation (English): 'Scenery' is uncountable and has no plural form.

    Correct: "The scenery of Kashmir".

    समझें: Scenery अनकाउंटेबल है, इसलिए sceneries गलत है।

    2. One of her firmest belief was that her friend shouted at her. [[SBI PO] [VERIFY]] a) One of her firmest belief b) One of her firmest beliefs

Answer: b Explanation (English): "One of" is always followed by a plural noun.

    समझें: 'One of' का मतलब है बहुत सारों में से एक, इसलिए यहाँ 'beliefs' आएगा।

    3. Two dozens of apples (a) / were distributed (b). [[NDA] [VERIFY]]

    Answer: a

Explanation (English): With a definite number (two), do not add 's' or 'of' to dozen. Correct: "Two dozen apples".

    समझें: अगर dozen के पहले कोई नंबर आ जाए, तो उसमें 's' या 'of' नहीं लगता।

    4. The headquarters of the Army (a) / is situated (b). [[CDS] [VERIFY]]

    Answer: d (No Error)

Explanation (English): 'Headquarters' is spelled with an 's' in both singular and plural forms.

    समझें: Headquarters शब्द हमेशा 's' के साथ ही लिखा जाता है, चाहे वह एक हो या ज़्यादा।

    Section 7 – Practice Worksheet

To help you master these tricky number rules, we have designed a worksheet with 20 questions across all difficulty levels with instant answer checking.

    Section 8 – Exam-wise Quick Strategy

SSC (CGL / CHSL / MTS):

Focus on uncountable nouns (furniture, scenery) and always-plural nouns (police, cattle). These are rule-based and direct. Time tip: Spot the error in 10 seconds.

Banking (IBPS PO / SBI PO / Clerk):

Look for subject-verb agreement with collective nouns in long sentences. Check the "Number-Hyphen-Noun" adjective rule. Read the whole sentence carefully; errors are often at the end.

    UPSC / CAT / CLAT:

Master foreign plurals (data, criteria) and nouns that change meaning (iron/irons). Focus on formal legal and academic vocabulary. The nuance of the noun's number is key to the tone.

Defence / Railways / State PSC:

Memorize military nouns (headquarters, forces) and basic irregular plurals (child/children). The "definite number + dozen" rule is a recurring favorite. Scan quickly for direct pluralization errors.
