Section 1 – What is Noun and Why Should You Care?
Have you ever been staring at an exam paper, looking at a sentence like "The sceneries of Kashmir are beautiful," and felt 100% sure it was correct? You’ve seen it on postcards and heard people say it a thousand times. But then, the results come out, and you realize you lost a crucial mark because "sceneries" isn't even a word in standard English! This is the classic "Noun Trap" that competitive exams in India love to set for students.
In the simplest terms, a Noun is a naming word. It is the word we use to give a name to a person, place, thing, idea, feeling, or quality so we can talk about it. If you can see it, touch it, feel it, or think about it, its name is a noun. From the mobile in your hand to the happiness in your heart, everything has a name, and in grammar, we call that name a Noun.
Whether you are appearing for SSC, Banking, UPSC, or Defence exams, Nouns are the foundation of the English section. Missing a simple rule here is like tripping at the starting line of a race. Across major competitive exams, Noun-based questions (directly or indirectly) are worth 2–5 marks – and in a cut-throat competition, every single mark counts!
Section 2 – The Complete Breakdown
1. Proper Nouns – Common Nouns
A Proper Noun is the specific, unique name given to a particular person, place, or thing (like your name or your city). A Common Noun is the general name for a class of people, places, or things.
प्रॉपर नाउन किसी का 'अपना खास नाम' होता है। कॉमन नाउन वह नाम है जो उस जैसी हर चीज़ को दिया जा सकता है। जैसे, दुनिया में बहुत सारे 'लड़के' (Common Noun) हैं, लेकिन 'विराट' (Proper Noun) एक खास लड़के का नाम है।
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Look for a word that is always capitalized, regardless of its position in the sentence. | 1. पहला अक्षर देखें। अगर वह हमेशा कैपिटल (Capital) लेटर में है, तो वह प्रॉपर नाउन है। |
2. Ask: "Is this a specific one or are there many like it?" Specific = Proper. | 2. खुद से पूछें: "क्या ऐसी बहुत सी चीज़ें हैं, या यह कोई एक खास है?" |
3. Check for articles (a, an, the). Common nouns usually need them in singular form. | 3. आर्टिकल्स (a, an, the) चेक करें। कॉमन नाउन के पहले अक्सर कोई आर्टिकल आता है। |
Quick Examples Table
Category | Common Noun | Proper Noun |
People | teacher | Mr. Sharma |
Places | city | Mumbai |
Days/Months | month | August |
Brands | car | Honda |
The #1 Exam Rule: Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter and generally do not take articles (a, an, the) before them.
2. Collective Nouns
A Collective Noun is a single word used to represent a group. Even though it refers to many, the word itself is usually treated as a single unit.
कलेक्टिव नाउन का मतलब है 'झुंड' या 'समूह' का नाम। जैसे बहुत सारे सैनिकों को मिलाकर हम 'आर्मी' (Army) कहते हैं।
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Look for a word that means a "group" but typically does not end in 's'. | 1. ऐसा शब्द खोजें जिसका मतलब "समूह" हो, लेकिन उसके अंत में 's' न लगा हो। |
2. Use the "member test": Is this made of multiple smaller members? | 2. "मेंबर टेस्ट" करें: सोचें, "क्या यह शब्द कई सदस्यों से मिलकर बना है?" |
3. Look for the pattern "a [noun] of [plural noun]" (e.g., a flock of sheep). | 3. "a [noun] of [plural noun]" वाला पैटर्न देखें। इसमें पहला शब्द कलेक्टिव नाउन है। |
Quick Examples Table
Group Type | Collective Noun | Example Phrase |
People | Jury | A panel of experts |
Animals | Flock | A pride of lions |
Things | Fleet | A fleet of ships |
Institutions | Board | The board of directors |
The #1 Exam Rule: If the group acts as a united unit, use a singular verb; if the members are divided or acting individually, use a plural verb.
3. Countable vs Uncountable Nouns
Countable nouns are things you can count (one pen, two pens). Uncountable nouns are substances, concepts, or masses that cannot be counted as individual units (water, furniture).
काउंटेबल नाउन वो हैं जिन्हें आप उंगलियों पर गिन सकते हैं। अनकाउंटेबल नाउन वो हैं जिन्हें आप गिन नहीं सकते, सिर्फ नाप या महसूस कर सकते हैं। इंग्लिश में 'Advice' और 'Information' अनकाउंटेबल होते हैं!
How to Identify (English) | कैसे पहचानें? (Hindi) |
1. Try putting a number before it. If "two [nouns]" makes sense, it is countable. | 1. नंबर टेस्ट: शब्द के आगे कोई नंबर लगाकर देखें। अगर वह सही लगे, तो वह काउंटेबल है। |
2. Uncountable nouns generally do not have an 's' at the end (no "furnitures"). | 2. प्लुरल चेक करें। अनकाउंटेबल के अंत में आमतौर पर 's' नहीं लगता। |
3. Countable nouns use 'many/few'; Uncountable nouns use 'much/little'. | 3. एडजेक्टिव देखें। काउंटेबल के साथ 'many' और अनकाउंटेबल के साथ 'much' लगता है। |
Quick Examples Table
Category | Countable (Singular – Plural) | Uncountable (Always Singular) |
Ideas | suggestion – suggestions | advice, information |
Objects | chair – chairs | furniture, machinery |
Food | bottle – bottles | water, milk, rice |
Categories | suitcase – suitcases | luggage, baggage |
The #1 Exam Rule: Never use 'a', 'an', or a plural 's' with uncountable nouns like scenery, furniture, or advice.
Section 3 – The Exam Traps (Don't Fall for These)
Examiners set these exact traps every year because they know where students tend to apply "common sense" instead of "grammar rules." Watch out!
⚠️ EXAM TRAP
What students think: "Sceneries" is the plural of scenery.
Correct answer: Use "scenery".
Rule: Uncountable nouns cannot be made plural by adding 's' or 'ies'.
Seen in: SSC CGL, NDA [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP
What students think: "The police is coming" because it is one department.
Correct answer: The police are coming.
Rule: 'Police' is a collective noun that is always treated as grammatically plural.
Seen in: SSC MTS, RRB NTPC [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP
What students think: "I have packed my luggages" because I have many bags.
Correct answer: I have packed my luggage.
Rule: 'Luggage' is an uncountable category name; individual bags are countable, but the luggage itself is not.
Seen in: CDS, SBI Clerk [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP What students think: "Mathematics are my favorite subject" because it ends in 's'.
Correct answer: Mathematics is my favorite subject.
Rule: Names of subjects ending in 's' (Physics, Economics) are singular.
Seen in: CUET, SSC CHSL [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP
What students think: "A ten-rupees note" is correct because 10 is plural.
Correct answer: A ten-rupee note.
Rule: When a number and noun are hyphenated to act as an adjective, the noun must be singular.
Seen in: IBPS PO, SSC CGL [VERIFY]
⚠️ EXAM TRAP
What students think: "He has grey hairs" because there are multiple strands.
Correct answer: He has grey hair.
Rule: Hair on the head is considered a mass noun (uncountable) unless referring to specific fallen strands.
Seen in: SSC CGL, MPSC [VERIFY]
Section 4 – Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Q1. The beautiful (a) / surrounding of the place (b) / enchanted me. (c) / No error (d) [SSC Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): The correct noun form is "surroundings" when referring to the area around a place. "Surrounding" is actually an adjective, so it cannot function as the noun in this context.
समझाएं : गलती पार्ट (b) में है। इंग्लिश में किसी जगह के आस-पास के इलाके को हमेशा "surroundings" (प्लुरल) कहा जाता है। 'Surrounding' सिर्फ एक एडजेक्टिव होता है, इसलिए यहाँ 's' लगाना ज़रूरी है।
Rule tested: Nouns always used in plural form (Section 02).
Q2. The fleet of ships (a) / were caught in a (b) / terrible storm off the coast. (c) / No error (d) [Banking Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): "Fleet" is a singular collective noun representing one group of ships. Since the group is acting together, the verb must be the singular "was" instead of "were".
समझाएं : गलती (b) में है। यहाँ असली सब्जेक्ट 'ships' नहीं, बल्कि 'fleet' (जहाजों का बेड़ा) है। बेड़ा तो एक ही है, इसलिए इसके साथ सिंगुलर वर्ब 'was' आएगा।
Rule tested: Collective nouns acting as a unit take singular verbs (Section 02).
Q3. The gentry of the town (a) / was invited (b) / to the grand celebration. (c) / No error (d) [UPSC CSAT Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): The word "gentry" refers to people of good social position and is a noun that looks singular but is always grammatically plural. Therefore, it must take the plural verb "were". समझाएं: गलती (b) में है। 'Gentry' शब्द देखने में सिंगुलर लगता है क्योंकि इसमें 's' नहीं है, पर यह हमेशा प्लुरल माना जाता है। इसलिए यहाँ 'was' की जगह 'were' होना चाहिए।
Rule tested: Nouns that look singular but are grammatically plural (Section 02).
Q4. The manager was angry because the new machinery _____ not been installed properly. [Banking Style] [Difficulty: Hard] a) have b) has c) is d) are
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): "Machinery" is an uncountable material noun and is always treated as singular. Therefore, it requires the singular auxiliary verb "has". समझाएं: सही जवाब 'has' है। 'Machinery' एक अनकाउंटेबल नाउन है, जिसे गिना नहीं जा सकता। अनकाउंटेबल चीज़ों को हमेशा सिंगुलर माना जाता है, इसलिए यहाँ 'has' लगेगा।
Rule tested: Material nouns are uncountable (Section 02).
Q5. I have bought (a) / two dozens eggs (b) / from the supermarket. (c) / No error (d) [Defence Style] [Difficulty: Medium]
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): When words like 'dozen' or 'hundred' are preceded by a specific number (like 'two'), they do not take an 's'. The correct phrase is "two dozen eggs".
समझाएं: गलती (b) में है। अगर dozen के पहले कोई नंबर (जैसे 2, 3) आ जाए, तो उसमें 's' नहीं लगाते। हम "दो दर्जन" बोलते हैं, वैसे ही इंग्लिश में 'two dozen' होगा।
Rule tested: Numerical nouns with definite numbers (Section 03).
Q6. She was known for her _____ and kindness. [CAT Style] [Difficulty: Medium] a) humilities b) humility c) humble d) humblenesses
✅ Correct: b
Explanation (English): "Humility" is an abstract noun representing a quality, which makes it uncountable. Abstract nouns do not have plural forms like "humilities".
समझाएं : सही जवाब 'humility' है। विनम्रता (Humility) एक भाव है जिसे गिना नहीं जा सकता। इसलिए इसका प्लुरल नहीं बन सकता, यह हमेशा सिंगुलर रहता है।
Rule tested: Abstract nouns are uncountable (Section 02).
Section 5 – Common Errors Indian Students Make
ERROR TYPE: Pluralizing Uncountable Nouns
❌ Wrong: He gave me some good advices.
✅ Correct: He gave me some good advice.
Why: 'Advice' is an abstract noun and is uncountable; it can never take an 's'.
Hindi: हिंदी में हम 'सलाहें' बोलते हैं, इसलिए advices सही लगता है। पर इंग्लिश में इसे गिना नहीं जा सकता, इसलिए 's' कभी न लिखें।
Seen in: SSC CGL, IBPS Clerk
ERROR TYPE: Adding 's' to "Always Plural" Nouns
❌ Wrong: The cattles are grazing in the field.
✅ Correct: The cattle are grazing in the field.
Why: The word 'cattle' is already plural. Adding an 's' is a double plural error. Hindi: 'Cattle' शब्द अपने आप में ही बहुवचन (plural) है। इसमें 's' लगाना वैसा ही है जैसे children को childrens लिख देना।
Seen in: NDA, SSC MTS
ERROR TYPE: Wrong Verb with Subject Names
❌ Wrong: Physics are a difficult subject.
✅ Correct: Physics is a difficult subject.
Why: Subjects ending in 's' are singular names and must take singular verbs. Hindi: 'Physics' के आखिरी में 's' देखकर हमें लगता है कि यह प्लुरल है, पर यह सिर्फ एक विषय का नाम है। इसलिए इसके साथ 'is' लगेगा।
Seen in: CUET, RRB NTPC
ERROR TYPE: Alphabet vs Alphabets
❌ Wrong: My child is learning the alphabets.
✅ Correct: My child is learning the alphabet.
Why: 'Alphabet' is the entire set of 26 letters. You learn one alphabet. 'Alphabets' means sets from different languages.
Hindi: 26 'Letters' (अक्षर) होते हैं, पर उन अक्षरों के पूरे एक सेट को एक 'Alphabet' (वर्णमाला) कहते हैं।
Seen in: SSC MTS, RRB Group D
ERROR TYPE: Pluralizing Kinship Terms
❌ Wrong: All my brother-in-laws are coming.
✅ Correct: All my brothers-in-law are coming.
Why: In compound nouns, you pluralize the principal (main) word. The main word here is 'brother'.
Hindi: कंपाउंड नाउन में मुख्य शब्द को प्लुरल बनाया जाता है। यहाँ मुख्य व्यक्ति 'brother' है, 'law' नहीं
Seen in: SBI Clerk, NDA
Section 6 – Previous Year Questions — Test Yourself
These questions have actually appeared in competitive exams. Try each one before reading the answer.
1. The sceneries of Kashmir (a) / is very charming (b) / and beautiful. (c) / No error (d) [[SSC CGL] [VERIFY]]
Answer: a Explanation (English): 'Scenery' is uncountable and does not have a plural form. It should be "The scenery of Kashmir". समझें: 'Scenery' अनकाउंटेबल है, इसे गिना नहीं जा सकता। इसलिए sceneries गलत है, सिर्फ scenery होगा।
2. The committee has (a) / submitted their report (b) / to the Chairman. (c) / No error (d) [[IBPS PO] [VERIFY]]
Answer: b
Explanation (English): The committee is acting as a unit (singular verb 'has'), so the pronoun must be the singular "its".
समझें : जब पूरी कमिटी ने मिलकर एक रिपोर्ट दी है, तो वह एक यूनिट बन गई। इसलिए 'their' की जगह 'its' आएगा।
3. One of her firmest belief was that her friend shouted at her. [[SBI PO] [VERIFY]] a) One of her firmest belief b) One of her firmest beliefs c) One of her firm belief d) No correction
Answer: b
Explanation (English): The rule is "One of the + Plural Noun". You are choosing one from many beliefs.
समझें : "One of" का मतलब है "बहुत सारों में से एक"। इसलिए 'belief' की जगह 'beliefs' (प्लुरल) होगा।
4. Two dozens of apples (a) / were distributed (b) / among the children. (c) / No error (d) [[NDA] [VERIFY]]
Answer: a Explanation (English): With a definite number like 'two', do not use 's' or 'of' with dozen. It should be "Two dozen apples".
समझें : अगर dozen के पहले कोई नंबर आ जाए, तो न तो उसमें 's' लगता है और न ही उसके बाद 'of' आता है।
5. Which is grammatically correct? [[UPSC CSAT] [VERIFY]] a) She gave me a lot of advices. b) She gave me a lot of advice.
Answer: b
Explanation (English): 'Advice' is uncountable and cannot be pluralized. "A lot of advice" is the correct way to show quantity.
समझें : Advice अनकाउंटेबल है, इसलिए इसमें 's' नहीं लगता। 'A lot of' इसके साथ बिल्कुल सही है।
Section 7 – Practice Worksheet
Mastering Nouns requires constant practice across different sentence structures. Our interactive worksheet features 20 hand-picked questions across all difficulty levels with instant answer checking to sharpen your skills.
Section 8 – Exam-wise Quick Strategy
SSC (CGL / CHSL / MTS):
Focus heavily on memorizing lists of uncountable nouns (scenery, furniture) and nouns that are always plural (cattle, police). Watch for the "many" vs "much" trap with uncountable nouns. Time tip: Aim to solve Noun error spotting in under 15 seconds.
Banking (IBPS PO / SBI PO / Clerk): Check if collective nouns (jury, committee) are united or divided to decide the verb/pronoun. Noun errors are often hidden inside very long, complex sentences. Focus on contextual usage rather than just direct rules.
UPSC / CAT / CLAT:
Focus on abstract nouns and nouns that change meaning when pluralized (like 'iron' vs 'irons'). In CLAT, pay special attention to legal collective nouns like 'jury' and 'summons'. Understanding the nuance of the noun is more important than basic identification.
Defence / Railways / State PSC:
Focus on the "Number + Dozen/Hundred" rule and military-related nouns like 'headquarters' and 'forces'. Direct pluralization rules are frequently tested in these exams. Ensure you know which nouns look singular but are plural (like gentry).
