Pedagogy Launch: Anubandh - Cultivating a Culture of Learning at New English School, Thane

Updated: Aug 26

Introduction

We at BhashaLab are delivering an English course for students from Std I to Std VIII at New English School, Thane. The school management tasked us with a clear objective: ensure that the students can read, write, speak, and comprehend English effectively. To meet this goal, the school has placed its trust in BhashaLab's pedagogy, giving us the freedom to implement our innovative methods.

Before the course began, we conducted the ASER reading test for all students to assess their reading abilities. The students were grouped based on their performance, and the groups were shared only with their teachers. The aim was to offer tailored activities and exercises without making the students aware of their grouping, ensuring a focus on individual improvement.

However, simply organizing lectures and exercises wasn’t enough. We faced a more profound challenge: How to keep students motivated? How to create an environment where they encourage each other to excel in English? How to inspire them to learn English on their own, even when no one is watching?

Thus, Anubandh was born—a unique initiative aimed at building school culture through gamification and positive reinforcement.

What is Anubandh?

The word 'Anubandh' in Marathi means 'a connection'. It signifies a tie or a continuous relationship between things. In the context of our program, 'Anubandh' beautifully symbolizes the connection or bond being formed between students, teachers, and the learning process, particularly through positive reinforcement and collaborative efforts. The program is structured into five key phases, each designed to build motivation, collaboration, and a positive learning environment.

Phase 1: US (Team Building and Planning)

In this initial phase, we focused on forming a strong team of teachers and stakeholders who would play a crucial role in implementing Anubandh. We identified key stakeholders—teachers and students—and engaged in discussions to gather opinions and address any queries. The goal was to ensure that teachers felt a sense of ownership and responsibility for the project, making it interesting and meaningful for them. By doing so, we aimed to build goodwill between teachers and students, laying a strong foundation for the program.

Phase 2: Affinity (Creating Class Heritage)

The second phase of Anubandh emphasizes the development of a unique identity for each class. By creating a distinct heritage, the to foster a sense of belonging and affinity among students. Each class was encouraged to adopt a unique name, credo, and slogan, which would become a source of pride and motivation for the students. This heritage-building process is intended to strengthen class unity and promote a collaborative learning atmosphere.

Phase 3: Expectations (Setting Clear Instructions)

Clear communication is essential for the success of any program. In this phase, we focused on establishing simple, clear instructions for students, with a strong emphasis on English learning. These instructions were designed not only to guide student behavior but also to encourage active engagement with English - whether through speaking, reading, or writing. To ensure that these instructions were always top of mind, they were prominently displayed throughout the school premises, serving as constant reminders for the students to follow and improve their English skills.

Phase 4: Positive Reinforcement (Encouragement Through Rewards)

Positive reinforcement is at the heart of Anubandh. In this phase, teachers were given eight green cards each month to distribute to students who followed instructions or demonstrated positive behavior, such as active participation in reading activities. The awarded green cards were deposited in the 'SCHOOL GROWTH BOX' by the students themselves. These cards, along with the visuals created from these activities, served as powerful motivators, encouraging students to continue their positive behavior.

Phase 5: Data Evaluation and Assessment

The final phase involves continuous monitoring and assessment to ensure the program's success. BhashaLab is responsible for implementing Anubandh and supporting teachers throughout the process. A leaderboard of points for students, teachers, and classes is maintained and shared weekly with the Principal and Management. We try to ensure the program's alignment with NEP 2020. Continuous monitoring, adaptability, and clear communication channels are key to the successful implementation of Anubandh.

Advantages of Anubandh

Anubandh offers numerous benefits, including the development of a positive reinforcement culture, enhanced class affinity, clear expectations, and effective communication. The program promotes holistic development, keeps the school management involved and encourages data-driven improvement. Moreover, it fosters community building, adaptability, and continuous improvement, all while promoting language skills and cultural values.

Conclusion

Anubandh is more than just a program; it’s a movement towards creating a vibrant, inclusive, and motivating learning environment at New English School, Thane. By focusing on positive reinforcement and community-building, we aim to inspire students to take ownership of their learning and develop a lifelong love for English language.
