    • उपाधिः | title | e.g., श्रीमान्, श्रीमती, सुश्रीः

    SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson

    १. स्वराः | Vowels

स्वराणाम् उच्चारणं स्वतन्त्ररूपेण भवति। Vowels are pronounced independently without the help of any other letter.

    स्वराः द्विविधाः सन्ति — समानाक्षराणि सन्ध्यक्षराणि च।

    • समानाक्षराणि (Simple Vowels): ह्रस्वः (Short): अ, इ, उ, ऋ, लृ दीर्घः (Long): आ, ई, ऊ, ॠ ('लृ'-वर्णस्य दीर्घः नास्ति। The vowel लृ does not have a long form.)

    • सन्ध्यक्षराणि (Compound Vowels formed by joining two vowels): ए (अ + इ), ऐ (अ + ए), ओ (अ + उ), औ (अ + ओ) (सन्ध्यक्षराणां ह्रस्वाः न सन्ति। These four vowels are always long.)

When vowels are pronounced through both the mouth and the nose (मुखेन सह नासिकया अपि), they are called अनुनासिक-स्वराः, such as अँ, आँ, इँ.

    २. व्यञ्जनानि | Consonants

    व्यञ्जनानाम् उच्चारणे स्वरस्य सहायता भवति। A pure consonant is written with a हलन्त् mark below it (क्, ख्, ग्) and needs a vowel like 'अ' to be pronounced clearly: क् + अ = क ख् + अ = ख

व्यञ्जनानां चत्वारः भेदाः सन्ति (There are four types of consonants):

    • स्पर्शाः (वर्गीयाः) वर्णाः — 25 consonants divided into 5 groups (पञ्च वर्गाः) according to where the tongue touches inside the mouth: क-वर्गः: क ख ग घ ङ च-वर्गः: च छ ज झ ञ ट-वर्गः: ट ठ ड ढ ण त-वर्गः: त थ द ध न प-वर्गः: प फ ब भ म

    • अन्तःस्थाः वर्णाः (अर्ध-स्वराः / Semi-vowels): य, र, ल, व

    • ऊष्म-वर्णाः (Warm-air sounds): श, ष, स, ह

    • अयोगवाहौ वर्णौ (Special sounds placed after a vowel): अं (अनुस्वारः) and अः (विसर्गः)

    ३. गुणिताक्षराणि | Combining Consonants and Vowels

    व्यञ्जनैः सह स्वराणां संयोजनेन गुणिताक्षराणि भवन्ति। When different vowels join a consonant, vowel signs (मात्राः) are attached to the consonant: क् + आ = का च् + इ = चि त् + उ = तु प् + ए = पे य् + औ = यौ

    ४. उच्चारण-स्थानानि | Places of Pronunciation

    आस्ये वर्णानां षट् मुख्य-उच्चारण-स्थानानि भवन्ति। Letters are produced at six main places in the mouth and nose: १. कण्ठः (Throat) — अ, आ, क-वर्गः, ह, विसर्गः (अः) २. तालु (Palate) — इ, ई, च-वर्गः, य, श ३. मूर्धा (Roof of the mouth) — ऋ, ॠ, ट-वर्गः, र, ष ४. दन्ताः (Teeth) — लृ, त-वर्गः, ल, स ५. ओष्ठः (Lips) — उ, ऊ, प-वर्गः ६. नासिका (Nose) — अं (अनुस्वारः), and the fifth letters ङ, ञ, ण, न, म (along with their own group's place)

    SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works ?

    १. व्यञ्जन-स्वर-संयोजनम् (गुणिताक्षर-निर्माणम्)

    रूपम् | Pattern शुद्ध-व्यञ्जनम् + स्वरः = गुणिताक्षरम्

अर्थः / Use A pure consonant cannot be pronounced easily by itself. When a vowel joins a pure consonant, the हलन्त् sign disappears and the vowel's मात्रा is added.

    उदाहरणम् | Example क् + अ = क च् + ई = ची प् + ऋ = पृ

स्मरणीयम् | Remember The vowel 'अ' has no separate visible मात्रा, but it removes the हलन्त् sign from the consonant (क् + अ = क).

    २. अर्ध-स्वराः (अन्तःस्थाः वर्णाः)

    रूपम् | Pattern इ + अ = य् + अ (य) उ + अ = व् + अ (व) ऋ + अ = र् + अ (र) लृ + अ = ल् + अ (ल)

    अर्थः / Use When the vowels इ, उ, ऋ, and लृ are immediately followed by another vowel, they change into the semi-vowels य्, व्, र्, and ल् respectively. Therefore, य, र, ल, व are called अर्ध-स्वराः.

    उदाहरणम् | Example यदि + अपि = यद्यपि सु + आगतम् = स्वागतम् पितृ + आज्ञा = पित्राज्ञा

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember The four अन्तःस्थाः letters (य, र, ल, व) frequently take the place of the vowels इ, ऋ, लृ, and उ when two words join.

    ३. अयोगवाह-योजनम् (अनुस्वारः विसर्गः च)

    रूपम् | Pattern व्यञ्जनम् + स्वरः + अं (ं) / अः (ः)

    अर्थः / Use Unlike regular consonants, अनुस्वारः (ं) and विसर्गः (ः) always come AFTER a vowel.

    उदाहरणम् | Example क् + अ + ं = कं क् + आ + ं = कां ख् + अ + ः = खः

स्मरणीयम् | Remember In अं and अः, the vowel 'अ' is placed at the beginning only to make pronunciation possible.

    SECTION 6 – मुख्यरूपाणि | Key Forms

    • वर्ण-विभागः | मुख्य-वर्णाः | उच्चारण-स्थानम्

    • कण्ठ्याः | अ, आ, क, ख, ग, घ, ङ, ह, अः | कण्ठः (Throat)

    • तालव्याः | इ, ई, च, छ, ज, झ, ञ, य, श | तालु (Palate)

    • मूर्धन्याः | ऋ, ॠ, ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण, र, ष | मूर्धा (Roof of mouth)

    • दन्त्याः | लृ, त, थ, द, ध, न, ल, स | दन्ताः (Teeth)

    • ओष्ठ्याः | उ, ऊ, प, फ, ब, भ, म |

    • ओष्ठः (Lips) कण्ठ-तालव्यौ | ए, ऐ |

    • कण्ठः + तालु कण्ठोष्ठ्यौ | ओ, औ |

    • कण्ठः + ओष्ठः दन्त्योष्ठ्यः | व |

    • दन्तः + ओष्ठः

    Observations:

    • The last letter of each of the five consonant groups (ङ, ञ, ण, न, म) is pronounced using both its own group's place and the nose (स्वस्थानेन सह नासिका).

    • Because ए (अ + इ) and ओ (अ + उ) are formed from two vowels, they are pronounced using two places of articulation (द्विस्थानीय-वर्णाः).

    SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Words and Expressions

Because this foundational chapter focuses on letters, sounds, and names, we build syllables, words, and full name structures step by step.

    Pattern 1: व्यञ्जनम् + स्वरः → गुणिताक्षरम्

    Example: त् + आ = ता त् + ई = ती त् + ओ = तो

Pattern 2: वर्ण-समूह-संयोजनम् → पूर्ण-शब्दः (Joining syllables to build words)

    Example: प + ङ्क + ज + म् = पङ्कजम् (lotus) च + न्द्रः = चन्द्रः (moon) वृ + क्षः = वृक्षः (tree)

Pattern 3: प्रथम-वर्णेन पद-निर्माणम् (Building words from a starting letter)

    Example: अ → अग्निः, अस्त्रम् न → नदी, नौका

Pattern 4: पूर्ण-नाम-लेखनम् (Writing a complete name with title)

    उपाधिः + प्रथम-नाम + मध्य-नाम + कुल-नाम Example: श्रीमान् + रामः + दशरथः + रघुवंशी (for elders / father / grandfather) श्रीमती + सीता + जनकः + मैथिली (for mother / grandmother) सुश्रीः + गार्गी + वचक्नुः + वाचक्नवी (for sister / unmarried girl)

    SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding

    प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — स्वराः कतिविधाः सन्ति? (How many main types of vowels are there?) उत्तरम्: द्विविधाः।

    प्रश्नः २. उचितं मेलनं कुरुत — (Identify the correct meaning from the lesson vocabulary) (क) पितुः पिता — ______ (ख) मातुः माता — ______

    उत्तरम्: (क) पितामहः (ख) मातामही

    प्रश्नः ३. रिक्तस्थानं पूरयत — (Combine the consonant and vowel to write the गुणिताक्षरम्) (क) च् + ऐ = ______ (ख) श् + उ = ______

    उत्तरम्: (क) चै (ख) शु

    प्रश्नः ४. उचितं रूपं चिनुत — 'प फ ब भ म' एतेषां वर्णानाम् उच्चारण-स्थानं किम् अस्ति? (कण्ठः / ओष्ठः / दन्ताः)

    उत्तरम्: ओष्ठः।

    SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    १. परिवारस्य सदस्यानां परिचयः (Naming family relations in Sanskrit):

Instead of English words, use Sanskrit terms for your family tree: माता (mother), पिता (father), भ्राता (brother), भगिनी (sister), पितामहः (paternal grandfather), मातामही (maternal grandmother).

    २. आदरसूचक-उपाधीनां प्रयोगः (Using respectful titles before names):

When writing the names of elders or family members: Use श्रीमान् before a man's name, श्रीमती before a married woman's name, and सुश्रीः before a girl's or unmarried woman's name.

    ३. नामान्त्याक्षरी-क्रीडायां प्रयोगः (Playing the Name-Antyakshari game in class):

Say your प्रथम-नाम (first name) aloud, such as मोहनः. Leave out the final विसर्गः (ः), take the last consonant sound 'न', and the next student says a name beginning with 'न', such as नलिनी.

    SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember

    1. स्वराः (vowels) are pronounced independently, whereas व्यञ्जनानि (consonants) always need the help of a vowel to be spoken aloud.

    2. The 25 स्पर्श-व्यञ्जनानि are neatly arranged into 5 वर्गs (क-वर्गः, च-वर्गः, ट-वर्गः, त-वर्गः, प-वर्गः) based on their exact place of pronunciation in the mouth.

    3. य, र, ल, व are called अन्तःस्थाः or अर्ध-स्वराः because they are formed from the vowels इ, ऋ, लृ, and उ when followed by another vowel.

    4. In Sanskrit, paternal grandparents are पितामहः and पितामही, while maternal grandparents are मातामहः and मातामही.

    5. Based on duration (मात्रा-कालः), a short vowel (ह्रस्वः) takes एक-मात्रा, a long vowel (दीर्घः) takes द्वि-मात्रा, a prolonged vowel (प्लुतः, like उ३) takes त्रि-मात्रा, and a pure consonant takes अर्ध-मात्रा.
