SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson
१. स्वपरिचयः | Introducing Yourself
To introduce yourself in Sanskrit, state your name using मम नाम and your role using अहम्:
मम नाम भरतः। अहं छात्रः। (My name is Bharata. I am a student.)
मम नाम मेनका। अहं छात्रा। (My name is Menaka. I am a student.) Notice that अहम् remains exactly the same whether the speaker is male (अहं चिकित्सकः) or female (अहं चिकित्सिका).
२. अहम् – आवाम् – वयम् (उत्तमपुरुषः) | Speaking About Ourselves
When speaking about ourselves, we use उत्तमपुरुषः pronouns according to number:
एकवचनम् (One speaker): अहं गायकः (I am a singer) | अहं गायिका।
द्विवचनम् (Two speakers): आवां गायकौ (We both are singers) | आवां गायिके।
बहुवचनम् (More than two speakers): वयं गायकाः (We all are singers) | वयं गायिकाः।
३. त्वम् – युवाम् – यूयम् (मध्यमपुरुषः) | Speaking to Others
When addressing the person or people in front of us, we use मध्यमपुरुषः pronouns:
एकवचनम् (One listener): त्वं कः? (Who are you, masculine?) | त्वं का? (Who are you, feminine?)
द्विवचनम् (Two listeners): युवां कौ? | युवां के?
बहुवचनम् (More than two listeners): यूयं के? | यूयं काः?
४. अस्मि – असि तथा क्रियापदानि | Matching Verbs with I and You
When we add the verb "to be" or action verbs, the verb ending changes to match the person (पुरुषः) and number (वचनम्):
With त्वम्, युवाम्, यूयम्: त्वं चित्रकारः असि। युवां चित्रकारौ स्थः। यूयं चित्रकाराः स्थ।
With अहम्, आवाम्, वयम्: अहम् आरक्षकः अस्मि। आवाम् आरक्षकौ स्वः। वयम् आरक्षकाः स्मः। In the song (गीतम्) at the end of the lesson, we also see action verbs with अहम् ending in -आमि: अहं पठामि, अहं वदामि, अहं लिखामि, अहं नमामि.
SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works
१. उत्तमपुरुष-प्रयोगः (First-Person Subject and Verb Agreement)
रूपम् | Pattern अहम् + अस्मि / पठामि (एकवचनम्) आवाम् + स्वः / गच्छावः (द्विवचनम्) वयम् + स्मः / गच्छामः (बहुवचनम्)
अर्थः / Use Whenever the subject is the speaker (अहम्, आवाम्, वयम्), we must use उत्तमपुरुषः verb forms. The pronouns अहम्, आवाम्, and वयम् do not change for gender, but the noun describing the speaker matches the speaker's gender and number.
उदाहरणम् | Example अहं चिकित्सिका अस्मि। (I am a doctor.) आवां चिकित्सिके स्वः। (We both are doctors.) वयं चिकित्सिकाः स्मः। (We all are doctors.)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Never use अस्ति with अहम्; always pair अहम् with अस्मि, आवाम् with स्वः, and वयम् with स्मः.
२. मध्यमपुरुष-प्रयोगः (Second-Person Subject and Verb Agreement)
रूपम् | Pattern त्वम् + असि / गच्छसि (एकवचनम्) युवाम् + स्थः / गच्छथः (द्विवचनम्) यूयम् + स्थ / गच्छथ (बहुवचनम्)
अर्थः / Use Whenever the subject is the listener ("you" — त्वम्, युवाम्, यूयम्), we use मध्यमपुरुषः verb forms. Notice carefully that द्विवचनम् has a विसर्गः (स्थः), while बहुवचनम् has no विसर्गः (स्थ).
उदाहरणम् | Example त्वं गायिका असि। (You are a singer.) युवां गायिके स्थः। (You both are singers.) यूयं गायिकाः स्थ। (You all are singers.)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Respectful words for "you" — भवान् (masculine) and भवती (feminine) — always take प्रथमपुरुषः verbs (भवान् अस्ति / गच्छति), whereas त्वम् takes मध्यमपुरुषः verbs (त्वम् असि / गच्छसि).
३. पदान्त-'म्' तथा अनुस्वार-लेखननियमः (Rule for Writing Final म् vs अनुस्वारः)
रूपम् | Pattern पदान्तः 'म्' + स्वरवर्णः → म् (यथा — अहम् आरक्षकः, पुस्तकम् अस्ति) पदान्तः 'म्' + व्यञ्जनवर्णः → अनुस्वारः 'ं' (यथा — अहं छात्रः, पुस्तकं नास्ति)
अर्थः / Use When a word ends in म् (such as अहम्, त्वम्, आवाम्, वयम्, पुस्तकम्) and the very next word begins with a consonant (व्यञ्जनवर्णः), the final म् is written as an अनुस्वारः dot (ं) above the letter. When the next word begins with a vowel (स्वरवर्णः), it stays as म्.
उदाहरणम् | Example अहं शिक्षकः अस्मि। (शिक्षकः starts with श्, a consonant → अहं) अहम् आरक्षिका अस्मि। (आरक्षिका starts with आ, a vowel → अहम्) त्वम् अधिवक्त्री असि। (अधिवक्त्री starts with अ, a vowel → त्वम्)
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Look at the first letter of the following word: if it is a consonant, write अहं / त्वं; if it is a vowel, write अहम् / त्वम्.
Observations:
Unlike सः/सा/तत्, the pronouns अहम्/आवाम्/वयम् and त्वम्/युवाम्/यूयम् never change for masculine or feminine gender.
ईकारान्त feminine nouns like नर्तकी, गृहिणी, and अधिवक्त्री form their dual with -यौ (नर्तक्यौ, गृहिण्यौ) and plural with -यः (नर्तक्यः, गृहिण्यः).
SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences
Pattern 1: स्व-नाम-परिचयः (Stating your name and who you are)
मम नाम ______। अहं ______ (अस्मि)। Example: मम नाम राघवः। अहं कृषकः। (My name is Raghava. I am a farmer.) मम नाम सुमित्रा। अहं चिकित्सिका। (My name is Sumitra. I am a doctor.)
Pattern 2: उत्तमपुरुषे वचन-परिवर्तनम् (Changing "I am" to "We both are" and "We all are")
अहं [एकवचनम्] अस्मि → आवां [द्विवचनम्] स्वः → वयं [बहुवचनम्] स्मः। Example: अहं तन्त्रज्ञः अस्मि। (I am a computer engineer.) आवां तन्त्रज्ञौ स्वः। (We both are computer engineers.) वयं तन्त्रज्ञाः स्मः। (We all are computer engineers.)
Pattern 3: मध्यमपुरुषे वचन-परिवर्तनम् (Changing "You are" across singular, dual, and plural)
त्वं [एकवचनम्] असि → युवां [द्विवचनम्] स्थः → यूयं [बहुवचनम्] स्थ। Example: त्वं क्रीडिका असि। (You are a player.) युवां क्रीडिके स्थः। (You both are players.) यूयं क्रीडिकाः स्थ। (You all are players.)
Pattern 4: उत्तमपुरुष-क्रियापदैः वाक्य-निर्माणम् (Stating actions you perform)
अहं ______ पठामि / वदामि / लिखामि / नमामि। Example: अहं संस्कृतं पठामि। (I read Sanskrit.) अहं मातरं नमामि। (I bow to mother.)
SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding
प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — 'आवां शिक्षकौ स्वः' इत्यत्र सर्वनामपदं किम् अस्ति? (Which word is the pronoun in the sentence 'आवां शिक्षकौ स्वः'?)
उत्तरम्: आवाम्।
प्रश्नः २. उचितं समानार्थकं पदं लिखत — (Write the Sanskrit synonym from the lesson vocabulary) (क) वार्ताहरः — ______ (ख) वित्तम् — ______
उत्तरम्: (क) पत्रकारः (ख) द्रविणम्
प्रश्नः ३. कोष्ठकात् उचितं पदं चित्वा रिक्तस्थानं पूरयत — (Choose the correct word from the brackets to complete the sentence) (क) यूयं चित्रकाराः ______। (असि / स्थः / स्थ) (ख) ______ नर्तक्यौ स्वः। (अहम् / आवाम् / वयम्)
उत्तरम्: (क) यूयं चित्रकाराः स्थ। (ख) आवां नर्तक्यौ स्वः।
प्रश्नः ४. उदाहरणानुसारं प्रश्ननिर्माणं कुरुत — 'युवां बालकौ।' (Frame a question for the answer 'युवां बालकौ')
उत्तरम्: युवां कौ?
SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit
१. कक्षायां स्वपरिचयः (Introducing yourself in class):
Stand up and introduce yourself in Sanskrit using your own name: मम नाम ______। अहं छात्रः अस्मि। (for a boy) मम नाम ______। अहं छात्रा अस्मि। (for a girl)
२. मित्रेण सह संवादः (Asking and answering with a friend):
Ask your classmate: त्वं कः? (or त्वं का?) Your classmate replies: अहं छात्रः अस्मि (or अहं क्रीडिका अस्मि)।
३. दैनन्दिन-क्रिया-कथनम् (Saying what you do every day in Sanskrit):
Use the action verbs from the lesson's song to talk about your Sanskrit study: अहं संस्कृतं पठामि। अहं संस्कृतं वदामि। अहं सुन्दराक्षरं लिखामि।
SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember
अहम् (I), आवाम् (we two), and वयम् (we all) are उत्तमपुरुषः pronouns used by the speaker, and they remain identical in masculine and feminine genders.
त्वम् (you), युवाम् (you two), and यूयम् (you all) are मध्यमपुरुषः pronouns used for the listener, and they also remain identical across genders.
Always match उत्तमपुरुषः subjects with अस्मि, स्वः, स्मः (or -आमि, -आवः, -आमः) and मध्यमपुरुषः subjects with असि, स्थः, स्थ (or -सि, -थः, -थ).
When a word ending in म् (like अहम् or त्वम्) is followed by a consonant, write म् as an अनुस्वारः (अहं छात्रः); when followed by a vowel, keep म् (अहम् आरक्षकः).
Respectful pronouns भवान् and भवती mean "you", but they always take प्रथमपुरुषः verb forms like अस्ति and गच्छति.
