    SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson

    १. संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनानि | Conjunct Consonants

द्वयोः बहूनां वा व्यञ्जन-वर्णानां मेलनेन संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनानि भवन्ति। When two or more consonants meet without any vowel between them, they join together to form a संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनम्.

    These combined shapes are not new letters of the alphabet; they are simply a special way of writing joined consonants together: क् + ष् + अ = क्ष (यथा — कक्षा) त् + र् + अ = त्र (यथा — पत्रम्) ज् + ञ् + अ = ज्ञ (यथा — ज्ञानम्) द् + य् + अ = द्य (यथा — विद्या)

    २. द्वयोः बहूनां वा व्यञ्जनानां मेलनम् | Different Types of Consonant Clusters

Any consonant can join with another consonant depending on the word:

    • Joining two different consonants: क्य (चाणक्यः), द्म (पद्मम्), ब्द (शब्दः)

    • Joining identical consonants (द्वित्वम्): क्क (ढक्का), त्त (वित्तम्)

    • Joining with 'र' (before or after): क्र (क्रमः), प्र (प्रगतिः), र्ण (वर्णः, अर्णवः)

    • Joining three consonants together: न्द्र (इन्द्रः), न्त्र (मन्त्रः), ष्ट्र (उष्ट्रः, राष्ट्रम्), न्ध्य (सन्ध्या)

    ३. वर्ण-वियोगः | Splitting Words into Sounds

    वर्ण-वियोगः means separating every pure consonant and every vowel in the exact order in which they are pronounced in a word: वाक्यम् = व् + आ + क् + य् + अ + म् पद्मम् = प् + अ + द् + म् + अ + म् वर्णः = व् + अ + र् + ण् + अ + ः

    ४. वर्ण-संयोगः | Joining Sounds into Words

    वर्ण-संयोगः is the reverse process. We join the separated consonants and vowels in sequence to form a complete Sanskrit word: प् + उ + ष् + क् + अ + र् + अ + म् = पुष्करम् (lotus) क् + अ + न् + द् + उ + क् + अ + ः = कन्दुकः (ball)

    SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works

    १. संयुक्त-व्यञ्जन-निर्माणम् (Joining Consonants Without a Vowel in Between)

    रूपम् | Pattern व्यञ्जनम् १ (हलन्त्) + व्यञ्जनम् २ (हलन्त्) + स्वरः = संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनम्

अर्थः / Use When the first consonant has no vowel after it, it attaches directly to the next consonant. The vowel that follows the last consonant gives pronunciation to the whole cluster.

    उदाहरणम् | Example क् + ष् + अ = क्ष (कक्षा = क् + अ + क् + ष् + आ) त् + र् + अ = त्र (पत्रम् = प् + अ + त् + र् + अ + म्) द् + य् + अ = द्य (विद्या = व् + इ + द् + य् + आ)

स्मरणीयम् | Remember The vowel sound at the end is needed to pronounce the cluster, but the conjunct itself is formed by the pure consonants.

    २. 'र'-वर्णस्य संयोगः (Joining the Consonant र् with Other Consonants)

    रूपम् | Pattern (क) व्यञ्जनम् + र् + स्वरः (र् comes second, written as a stroke below) (ख) र् + व्यञ्जनम् + स्वरः (र् comes first, written as a रेफः hook at the top)

    अर्थः / Use When र् follows another pure consonant (like प् + र् or क् + र्), it appears at the bottom (प्र, क्र). When र् comes before another consonant (like र् + ण् or र् + म्), it goes above the following letter (र्ण, र्म).

    उदाहरणम् | Example क् + र् + ई + ड् + आ = क्रीडा ब् + र् + अ + ह् + म् + अ = ब्रह्म व् + अ + र् + ण् + अ + ः = वर्णः

स्मरणीयम् | Remember Always pronounce र् in the exact position where it stands in the sound sequence — before the consonant in वर्णः, and after the consonant in क्रीडा.

    ३. वर्ण-वियोगः वर्ण-संयोगः च (Sound Analysis and Word Building)

    रूपम् | Pattern पूर्ण-पदम् ⇄ प्रत्येकं व्यञ्जनं स्वरः च

अर्थः / Use Every Sanskrit word is built transparently from exact sounds. If a word ends in a vowel or विसर्गः, write that vowel or विसर्गः at the end; if it ends in a pure consonant like म्, keep the हलन्त् sign at the end.

    उदाहरणम् | Example अजः = अ + ज् + अ + ः कण्ठ्यः = क् + अ + ण् + ठ् + य् + अ + ः सङ्गणकम् = स् + अ + ङ् + ग् + अ + ण् + अ + क् + अ + म्

    स्मरणीयम् | Remember When doing वर्ण-वियोगः, never leave a full consonant unsplit — always separate its hidden vowel (e.g., ज = ज् + अ).

    SECTION 6 – मुख्यरूपाणि | Key Forms

    संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनम् | वर्ण-मेलनम् (Consonants + Vowel) |

    Observations:

    • The four common conjuncts क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, and द्य look distinct in script, so knowing their exact consonant components (क्+ष्, त्+र्, ज्+ञ्, द्+य्) is essential for reading and spelling.

    • Even three or four pure consonants can combine before a single vowel, as seen in राष्ट्रम् (ष् + ट् + र् + अ) and कार्त्स्न्यम् (र् + त् + स् + न् + य् + अ).

SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Words through Sound Combination

Because this foundational chapter trains students in वर्ण-वियोगः and वर्ण-संयोगः, we practise building and analysing complete Sanskrit words.

Pattern 1: सामान्य-पदानां वर्ण-वियोगः (Splitting simple words without conjuncts)

    Example: रामः → र् + आ + म् + अ + ः गुरुः → ग् + उ + र् + उ + ः औषधम् → औ + ष् + अ + ध् + अ + म्

    Pattern 2: द्वि-व्यञ्जन-संयोगेन पद-निर्माणम् (Building words with two-consonant clusters)

    Example: प् + अ + த् + म् + अ + म् → पद्मम् (lotus) व् + इ + द् + य् + आ → विद्या (knowledge) व् + ऐ + द् + य् + आ → वैद्या (doctor)

    Pattern 3: त्रि-व्यञ्जन-संयोगेन पद-निर्माणम् (Building words with three-consonant clusters)

    Example: म् + अ + त् + स् + य् + अ + ः → मत्स्यः (fish) स् + व् + अ + स् + त् + इ + क् + अ + ः → स्वस्तिकः (auspicious symbol)

    Pattern 4: अनुस्वार-विसर्ग-युक्त-पदानां विश्लेषणम् (Words with अनुस्वारः and विसर्गः in the middle)

    Example: स् + अ + ं + य् + अ + म् + अ + ः → संयमः (self-control) द् + उ + ः + ख् + अ + म् → दुःखम् (sorrow)

    SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding

    प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — 'ज् + ञ् + अ' एतेषां मेलनेन किं संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनं भवति? (Which conjunct consonant is formed by joining ज् + ञ् + अ?)

    उत्तरम्: ज्ञ।

    प्रश्नः २. उचितं समानार्थकं पदं लिखत — (Write the Sanskrit synonym from the lesson vocabulary) (क) समुद्रः — ______ (ख) मीनः — ______

    उत्तरम्: (क) अर्णवः (ख) मत्स्यः

    प्रश्नः ३. वर्ण-वियोगं कुरुत — (Split the following words into their individual letters) (क) पत्रम् = ______ (ख) वृक्षः = ______

    उत्तरम्: (क) पत्रम् = प् + अ + त् + र् + अ + म् (ख) वृक्षः = व् + ऋ + क् + ष् + अ + ः

    प्रश्नः ४. वर्ण-संयोगं कृत्वा पदं लिखत — (Combine the letters to write the complete word) (क) द् + आ + श् + अ + र् + अ + थ् + इ + ः = ______ (ख) न् + अ + र् + ए + न् + द् + र् + अ + ः = ______ उत्तरम्: (क) दाशरथिः (ख) नरेन्द्रः

    SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit

    १. दैनिक-वस्तूनां संस्कृत-नामानि (Naming everyday objects using conjunct-consonant words):

Use the Sanskrit words from this lesson when referring to familiar things around you: कक्षा (classroom), पत्रम् (leaf / letter), धनम् / वित्तम् (money), सङ्गणकम् (computer), कन्दुकः (ball).

    २. स्व-नाम्नः वर्ण-वियोगः (Breaking your own name into Sanskrit sounds):

    Just as the lesson splits रामः (र् + आ + म् + अ + ः) and सीता (स् + ई + त् + आ), write your own first name in Devanagari and separate every consonant and vowel.

    ३. नूतन-पदानां पठन-अभ्यासः (Decoding unfamiliar long words in the textbook):

    Whenever you see a word with a conjunct consonant in future lessons — such as वृक्षः or वैद्या in Chapter 3 — mentally split the conjunct (क्ष = क् + ष् + अ; द्य = द् + य् + आ) to pronounce it effortlessly.

    SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember

    1. A संयुक्त-व्यञ्जनम् is formed when two or more pure consonants join directly without any vowel between them.

    2. Conjunct consonants are not new letters of the alphabet; they are simply combined writing forms of existing consonants.

    3. Four very important special conjunct shapes to remember are क्ष (क् + ष् + अ), त्र (त् + र् + अ), ज्ञ (ज् + ञ् + अ), and द्य (द् + य् + अ).

    4. In वर्ण-वियोगः, every consonant must be written with a हलन्त् sign and followed by the exact vowel that gives it sound (e.g., क्रीडा = क् + र् + ई + ड् + आ).

    5. In वर्ण-संयोगः, pure consonants placed side by side merge into a conjunct, while the following vowel attaches its मात्रा to that combined form.
