SECTION 4 – पाठं जानीमः | Understand the Lesson
१. त्रीणि लिङ्गानि त्रीणि वचनानि च | Three Genders and Three Numbers
In Sanskrit, nouns are grouped into three genders (पुंलिङ्गम्, स्त्रीलिङ्गम्, नपुंसकलिङ्गम्) and change their endings to show whether we mean one (एकवचनम्), two (द्विवचनम्), or more than two (बहुवचनम्):
पुंलिङ्गम् (Masculine): बालकः (one boy) → बालकौ (two boys) → बालकाः (many boys)
स्त्रीलिङ्गम् (Feminine): बालिका (one girl) → बालिके (two girls) → बालिकाः (many girls)
नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (Neuter): पुस्तकम् (one book) → पुस्तके (two books) → पुस्तकानि (many books)
२. सर्वनाम-प्रयोगः (समीपे दूरे च) | Pointing to Near and Far
To point to someone or something at a distance ("that / he / she / it"), we use forms of तद् (सः, सा, तत्). To point to someone or something close by ("this"), we use forms of एतद् (एषः, एषा, एतत्):
सः शुकः (That is a parrot) | एषः बालकः (This is a boy)
सा शिक्षिका (That is a teacher) | एषा बालिका (This is a girl)
तत् फलम् (That is a fruit) | एतत् फलम् (This is a fruit)
३. प्रश्नोत्तर-पद्धतिः | Asking Who, What, and Yes/No Questions
The question word किम् also changes according to gender and number:
पुंलिङ्गम्: सः कः? (Who is he?) → सः शिक्षकः।
स्त्रीलिङ्गम्: एषा का? (Who is she?) → एषा लता।
नपुंसकलिङ्गम्: तत् किम्? (What is that?) → तत् चन्द्रयानम्।
When കിम् is placed at the start of a sentence, it asks a Yes/No question: किम् एते जलं पिबन्ति? — आम्, एते जलं पिबन्ति। (Yes, they drink water.) किं सः भ्रमति? — न, सः न भ्रमति। सः तु पाठयति। (No, he is not walking. He is teaching.)
४. क्रियापदानि | Action Words Matching Number
Verbs change according to the number of the subject (एकवचनम्, द्विवचनम्, बहुवचनम्), but remain the same across all three genders:
एकवचनम्: पठति, लिखति, खादति, अस्ति
द्विवचनम्: पठतः, लिखतः, खादतः, स्तः
बहुवचनम्: पठन्ति, पिबन्ति, खादन्ति, सन्ति
SECTION 5 – भाषा-पद्धतिः | How the Sanskrit Works
१. लिङ्ग-वचनानुसारं सर्वनाम-संज्ञा-समन्वयः (Pronoun and Noun Agreement)
रूपम् | Pattern सर्वनामपदम् (लिङ्गं वचनं च) + संज्ञापदम् (समानं लिङ्गं वचनं च)
अर्थः / Use The pronoun (सः/एषः, सा/एषा, तत्/एतत्) and question word (कः, का, किम्) must always match the gender and number of the noun they refer to.
उदाहरणम् | Example एषः शिक्षकः। एतौ बालकौ। एते बालकाः। सा वृद्धा। ते अजे। ताः महिलाः। तत् चन्द्रयानम्। ते पुस्तके। तानि रेलयानानि।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Notice how ते appears in three places: masculine plural (ते बालकाः), feminine dual (ते शिक्षिके), and neuter dual (ते फले).
२. कर्तृ-क्रिया-समन्वयः (Subject and Verb Agreement in Number)
रूपम् | Pattern एकवचन-कर्ता + ति (करोति / अस्ति) द्विवचन-कर्ता + तः (कुरुतः / स्तः) बहुवचन-कर्ता + न्ति (कुर्वन्ति / सन्ति)
अर्थः / Use Whether the subject is masculine, feminine, or neuter, the verb ending depends only on how many subjects are performing the action: one (-ति), two (-तः), or many (-न्ति).
उदाहरणम् | Example सः पाठयति। सा विहरति। तत् चन्द्रयानम् अस्ति। तौ नृत्यतः। एते भ्रमतः। ते पुस्तके स्तः। ते क्रीडन्ति। ताः धावन्ति। तानि रेलयानानि सन्ति।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember When asking what someone is doing, the verb करोति also changes by number: किं करोति? (one), किं कुरुतः? (two), किं कुर्वन्ति? (many).
३. शब्दान्त-वर्णः लिङ्ग-परिचयः च (Identifying Gender by Word Endings)
रूपम् | Pattern अकारान्तः (ends in अ) → पुंलिङ्गम् (बालकः, वृक्षः) अथवा नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (फलम्, पुस्तकम्) आकारान्तः (ends in आ) → प्रायशः स्त्रीलिङ्गम् (बालिका, लता, माला) ईकारान्तः (ends in ई) → प्रायशः स्त्रीलिङ्गम् (नदी, लेखनी, नर्तकी)
अर्थः / Use Looking at the final sound of the base word (अ, आ, or ई) helps us recognise its gender and choose the right pronoun.
उदाहरणम् | Example वृक्ष (अकारान्तः पुंलिङ्गः) → सः वृक्षः। फल (अकारान्तः नपुंसकलिङ्गः) → तत् फलम्। लता (आकारान्तः स्त्रीलिङ्गः) → सा लता। नदी (ईकारान्तः स्त्रीलिङ्गः) → सा नदी।
स्मरणीयम् | Remember Words ending in आ (like वैद्या, शिक्षिका) and ई (like लेखनी, अङ्कनी) are typically स्त्रीलिङ्गम्.
Observations:
In द्विवचनम्, feminine and neuter pronouns are identical: ते / एते / के.
Use अस्ति (is), स्तः (two are), and सन्ति (many are) when stating what objects are in singular, dual, and plural.
SECTION 7 – वाक्यरचना | Build Sentences
Pattern 1: परिचय-प्रश्नः उत्तरं च (Asking and identifying who or what)
[सर्वनाम] + [कः / का / किम्] ? → [सर्वनाम] + [संज्ञापदम्]। Example: एषः कः? → एषः शिक्षकः। (This is a teacher.) एषा का? → एषा गायिका। (This is a singer.) एतत् किम्? → एतत् दूरदर्शनम्। (This is a television.)
Pattern 2: वचन-परिवर्तनम् (Changing from singular to dual and plural)
Example: एषः बालकः पठति। (This boy reads.) एतौ बालकौ पठतः। (These two boys read.) एते बालकाः पठन्ति। (These boys read.)
Pattern 3: क्रिया-प्रश्नः उत्तरं च (Asking what someone is doing)
[कर्ता] + किं करोति / कुरुतः / कुर्वन्ति ? → [कर्ता] + [क्रियापदम्]। Example: बालकौ किं कुरुतः? → बालकौ पठतः। महिलाः किं कुर्वन्ति? → महिलाः धावन्ति।
Pattern 4: 'आम्' अथवा 'न' इति उत्तरम् (Answering Yes or No with 'तु' for contrast)
किम् + [कर्ता] + [क्रियापदम् / संज्ञापदम्] ? → आम् / न, ... तु ...। Example: किम् एते जलं पिबन्ति? → आम्, एते जलं पिबन्ति। किं तत् विमानम्? → न, तत् विमानं न। तत् तु चन्द्रयानम् अस्ति।
SECTION 8 – पाठावबोधनम् | Check Your Understanding
प्रश्नः १. एकपदेन उत्तरत — मयूरौ किं कुरुतः? (What do the two peacocks do?)
उत्तरम्: नृत्यतः।
प्रश्नः २. उचितं सर्वनामपदं चिनुत — (Choose the correct pronoun to match the noun) (क) ______ अजा (सः / सा / तत्) (ख) ______ पुस्तकानि (एतत् / एते / एतानि)
उत्तरम्: (क) सा अजा (ख) एतानि पुस्तकानि
प्रश्नः ३. कोष्ठकात् उचितं क्रियापदं चित्वा रिक्तस्थानं पूरयत — (Complete the sentence with the correct verb form) (क) ताः महिलाः ______। (धावति / धावतः / धावन्ति) (ख) कमलम् ______। (विकसति / नृत्यति / लिखति)
उत्तरम्: (क) ताः महिलाः धावन्ति। (ख) कमलम् विकसति।
प्रश्नः ४. पूर्णवाक्येन उत्तरत — किं तानि बसयानानि सन्ति? (Look at the trains in the lesson and answer in a complete Sanskrit sentence)
उत्तरम्: न, तानि बसयानानि न, तानि तु रेलयानानि सन्ति।
SECTION 9 – संस्कृते प्रयोगः | Use the Sanskrit
१. कक्षायां गृहवस्तूनां च परिचयः (Identifying objects in your room or classroom):
Point to objects near you and name them using एषः, एषा, or एतत् according to their gender: एषः स्यूतः (This is a bag)। एषा लेखनी (This is a pen)। एतत् वातायनम् (This is a window)।
२. मित्राणां क्रियाकलाप-वर्णनम् (Describing what people around you are doing):
Observe one, two, or many friends and state their action: छात्रः लिखति (The student writes)। बालकौ पठतः (Two boys read)। बालकाः क्रीडन्ति (Boys play)।
३. मित्रैः सह प्रश्नोत्तर-अभ्यासः (Practising quick Q&A with a classmate):
Point to a book or pen on the desk and ask your partner: एतत् किम्? — एतत् पुस्तकम्। किम् एतत् फलम्? — न, एतत् फलं न। एतत् तु पुस्तकम् अस्ति।
SECTION 10 – स्मरणीयानि पञ्च | 5 Things to Remember
Sanskrit has three genders — पुंलिङ्गम् (masculine), स्त्रीलिङ्गम् (feminine), and नपुंसकलिङ्गम् (neuter) — and three numbers — एकवचनम् (one), द्विवचनम् (two), and बहुवचनम् (more than two).
एषः, एषा, एतत् are used for persons or things near the speaker, while सः, सा, तत् are used for persons or things at a distance.
To ask "who?" or "what?" in the singular, use कः for masculine, का for feminine, and किम् for neuter.
Verb endings change according to the number of the subject (-ति for one, -तः for two, -न्ति for many), regardless of whether the subject is masculine, feminine, or neuter.
Words ending in 'अ' (अकारान्तः) are masculine or neuter, while words ending in 'आ' (आकारान्तः) or 'ई' (ईकारान्तः) are usually feminine.
