    1. Chapter Summary (Paath Saar)

    English Summary:

This story is adapted from the collection "Sanskrit-Praudhapathavalih". It depicts a confused and lazy boy who, instead of going to school, wants to play. He invites his friends, but they refuse as they are busy preparing for school. Feeling rejected, he enters a garden and tries to play with animals and insects. First, he asks a honeybee, who refuses because it is busy collecting honey. Then, he asks a bird (Chataka), who is busy engaging in building its nest. Finally, he approaches a dog, who initially seems free but then states it must guard its master's house to repay his kindness.

Seeing that even birds and animals are dedicated to their duties, the boy feels ashamed of his idleness. He realizes that everyone has a purpose and work to do. He abandons his laziness, starts studying seriously, and eventually achieves great scholarship, fame, and wealth.

    Moral (Sandesh):

Everyone in this world has duties to perform. Idleness leads to shame, while dedication to one's duty brings success and respect. We should not waste our valuable time.

    2. Sentence-by-Sentence Translation (Anuvad)

    Sanskrit Text (Split Sandhis)

    English Translation

A certain confused/misguided boy went to play during the time of going to school.

But at that time, no friend was available to spend time playing with him.

Because all of them, remembering the lessons of the previous day, were hurrying to go to school.

The lazy boy, avoiding their sight out of shame, entered a garden alone.

He thought - "Let these poor slaves of books stay/stop (doing their work)."

    I, however, will entertain myself.

Then, seeing a bee wandering in the flower garden, he called him two or three times to play.

Still, that bee rejected the boy's call.

Then, as the boy persisted stubbornly again and again, the bee sang/buzzed - "We are indeed busy collecting honey."

Then that boy... saw a sparrow/bird carrying grass blades etc. in its beak.

And he said - "O bird-child! Will you be the friend of me, a human?"

Come, let's play. Leave this dry grass...

But he (the bird) said - "I have to build a nest on the branch of the Banyan tree," and became busy with his work.

Then the sad boy... saw a dog running.

"O friend of humans! Why are you roaming in this hot summer day?"

Take shelter under this tree root which provides cool shade.

The dog replied - "In the house of the master who feeds me with the love of a son..."

"I should not deviate even a little from the duty of guarding/protection."

That boy (thought)... "How everyone in this world is immersed in their own work?"

No one tolerates wasting time in vain like me.

Salutations to these who have created a sense of disgust in me towards laziness.

He became engaged in studies/learning and attained great scholarship, fame, and wealth.
