This lesson narrates a story from the Rigveda about King Prithu Vainya, the son of King Vena. He is remembered as an ideal emperor who was dedicated to the welfare of his subjects. When Prithu Vainya ascended the throne, he toured his kingdom and was distressed to find his people weak, powerless, and living like animals by eating low-quality food. His royal priest advised him that all wealth, including grains, was hidden within the earth and that he should strive to obtain it.
When King Prithu prepared his bow to strike the earth, the Earth (Bhumi) appeared before him in the form of a woman. She explained that due to his father Vena's misrule, she had hidden all grains and fruits within herself for fear of thieves and plunderers. She advised the noble King Prithu to abandon his weapon and instead take up farming tools like ploughs and sickles, and cultivate the land along with his people. Following her advice, Prithu Vainya managed water by damming rivers and conserving rainwater , made the land fertile , and diligently collected, processed, and sowed seeds. After the rains, the seeds sprouted, and the bountiful harvest brought satisfaction to all his subjects. For pioneering agriculture in India, he is revered as the first farmer, and it is believed that the Earth was named 'Prithvi' as a memorial to his great work.
