English This lesson, presented as a 'Powada' (a Maharashtrian folk ballad), tells a story from the Vedas about loyalty. The Panis, a group of Asuras, stole the cows of the gods. Indra first sent Garuda (Suparna) to find them, but Garuda was bribed by the Panis and thus betrayed his master. Indra then sent the divine dog, Sarama (देवशुनी).

शाहिरः - श्रुत्वा तद् वाक्यं सरमया गर्जितम् । ... सा गता परं तीरम्।	Shahira: Hearing those words, Sarama roared. "See my strength, the strength of my dedication to duty!" Saying this, she jumped into the water. She reached the other bank.	शाहीर: ते वाक्य ऐकून सरमा गरजली. "पहा माझे सामर्थ्य, माझ्या कार्यनिष्ठेचे सामर्थ्य!" असे म्हणून तिने पाण्यात उडी घेतली. ती पलीकडच्या तीरावर पोहोचली.
शाहिरः - रसा सा अधोमुखी भूता। ... पश्यति क्षुद्रशुनीं सरमाम् ।	Shahira: That Rasa (river) hung her head in shame. She became dejected. "How was I defeated by a lowly (dog)?" She just watched the "lowly" dog Sarama.	शाहीर: ती रसा नदी लाजेने मान खाली घालून उभी राहिली. तिचा चेहरा पडला. 'मी एका क्षुद्र कुत्रीकडून कशी पराभूत झाले?' (असा विचार करत) ती त्या 'क्षुद्र' कुत्री सरमेला पाहू लागली.
शाहिरः - एवं सरमा परतीरं प्राप्ता । ... समाप्तमन्वेषणकार्यम् ।।	Shahira: Thus Sarama reached the other bank. She looks here, she looks there... She asks the Panis, she searches the forest, she enters the cave. In the cave, (she found) all the cows of her master, which were hidden by the Panis. The search-mission is complete!	शाहीर: अशाप्रकारे सरमा पलीकडच्या तीरावर पोहोचली. ती इकडे पाहते, तिकडे पाहते... ती पणींना विचारते, जंगल शोधते, गुहेत प्रवेश करते. गुहेमध्ये पणींनी लपवलेले प्रभूचे (इंद्राचे) सर्व गोधन (तिला सापडले). शोधकार्य संपले!

English Sarama faced two main obstacles:

A natural obstacle: The powerful Rasa river, which was flowing with great speed (पृथुलरभसा) and was uprooting trees on its banks, blocking her path.
A moral obstacle: The temptation offered by the Panis. They tried to bribe her with milk, curd, ghee, and a share of the cows to make her forget her loyalty and her master, Indra.
