    1. Chapter Summary (Paath Saar)


    English Summary:

    This dramatic piece is an excerpt from the fifth act of the famous Sanskrit play "Kundamala" written by Dingnaga. The scene takes place in Lord Rama's court. Two young ascetics, Lava and Kusha, enter, guided by the Vidushaka (Jester). Rama, unaware that they are his own sons, is captivated by their beauty and modesty. He invites them to sit on his throne, but they politely refuse out of respect. Rama then pulls them to sit on his lap, embracing them and feeling a deep, inexplicable affection ("Heart-touching touch").

    As the conversation progresses, Rama asks about their lineage, their teacher, and their parents. It is revealed that they belong to the Solar Dynasty (Surya Vamsha), their teacher is Valmiki, and their father is known as "Niranukrosha" (The Ruthless One) by their mother. Through various clues—such as their identical appearance to Rama and the details about their mother being abandoned—Rama begins to realize they might be his own children. The scene concludes with the boys preparing to sing the Ramayana.

    Moral (Sandesh):

    Affection for children is a natural instinct that transcends boundaries. Children are lovable to everyone, even great kings, simply due to their innocence and tender age.

    Vidushaka: This way, this way, O noble ones!


    कुशलवौ: (रामम् उपसृत्य प्रणम्य च) अपि कुशलं महाराजस्य?


    Lava & Kusha: (Approaching Rama and bowing) Is all well with the Maharaja?


    रामः: युष्मद्दर्शनात् कुशलमिव।


    Rama: It is as if all is well just by seeing you.


    भवतोः किं वयमत्र कुशलप्रश्नस्य भाजनम् एव, न पुनरतिथिजनसमुचितस्य कण्ठाश्लेषस्य।

    Am I only the object of your polite inquiry here, and not deserving of a hug suitable for guests?


    (परिष्वज्य) अहो हृदयग्राही स्पर्शः।

    (Embracing them) Oh! This touch is heart-captivating.


    रामः: (अङ्कमुपवेशयति)


    Rama: (Makes them sit on his lap).


    उभौ: (अनिच्छां नाटयतः) राजन्! अलमतिदाक्षिण्येन।

    Both: (Acting reluctant) O King! Enough with this excessive kindness.


    रामः: अलमतिशालीनतया।


    Rama: Enough with this excessive modesty.


    रामः: क्षत्रियकुल-पितामहयोः सूर्यचन्द्रयोः को वा भवतोर्वशस्य कर्त्ता?


    Rama: Who is the founder of your lineage—the Sun or the Moon, the ancestors of the Kshatriya clan?


    लवः: भगवान् सहस्रदीधितिः।


    Lava: Lord Sun (The one with a thousand rays).


    रामः: कथमस्मत्समानाभिजनौ संवृत्तौ?


    Rama: How did you become members of the same family as me?


    विदूषकः: किं नामधेयो भवतोर्गुरुः?


    Vidushaka: What is the name of your teacher?


    लवः: ननु भगवान् वाल्मीकिः।


    Lava: Indeed, Lord Valmiki.


    रामः: केन सम्बन्धेन?


    Rama: By what relationship?


    लवः: उपनयनोपदेशेन।


    Lava: Through the initiation of the sacred thread ceremony (Upanayana).


    कुशः: (पितुः नाम) निरनुक्रोशो नाम....


    Kusha: (Regarding father's name) His name is "The Ruthless One" (Niranukrosha).


    रामः: वयस्य! अपूर्वं खलु नामधेयम्।

    Rama: Friend! That is indeed a unique name.


    3. Shloka Analysis

    Shloka 1 (Page 2)

    भवति शिशुजनो वयोऽनुरोधाद् गुणमहतामपि लालनीय एव।

    व्रजति हिमकरोऽपि बालभावात् पशुपति-मस्तक-केतकच्छदत्वम्।।

    • Anvaya: गुणमहताम् अपि वयोऽनुरोधात् शिशुजनः लालनीयः एव भवति। बालभावात् हि हिमकरः अपि पशुपति-मस्तक-केतकच्छदत्वं व्रजति।

    • English Meaning: Even for those great in virtues, a child is worthy of affection simply due to their tender age. Indeed, because of its childishness (newness/crescent shape), even the Moon becomes an ornament on Lord Shiva's head, resembling a Ketaki flower.

    भवन्तौ गायन्तौ कविरपि पुराणो व्रतनिधिर्

    गिरां सन्दर्भोऽयं प्रथममवतीर्णो वसुमतीम्।

    कथा चेयं श्लाघ्या सरसिरुहनाभस्य नियतं

    पुनाति श्रोतारं रमयति च सोऽयं परिकरः।।

    • Anvaya: भवन्तौ गायन्तौ, पुराणः व्रतनिधिः कविः अपि, वसुमतीम् प्रथमम् अवतीर्णः गिराम् अयं सन्दर्भः। सरसिरुहनाभस्य च इयं श्लाघ्या कथा, सः च अयं परिकरः नियतं श्रोतारं पुनाति रमयति च।

    • English Meaning: You two are the singers; the poet is the ancient sage (Valmiki), the repository of penance. This composition of words has descended to earth for the first time. This praiseworthy story is of Lord Vishnu (Lotus-navelled). This combination surely purifies and delights the listeners.
